Sam Mendes Opens Up About His Greatest Fear

Steve Granitz/WireImage

Director Sam Mendes stepped away from the camera to focus on his family with wife Kate Winslet several years ago, and it’s a decision he doesn’t regret.

In a new interview with the Times Online, the 43-year-old Academy Award winner says that — to the contrary — his love for son Joe Alfie, 5, and step-daughter Mia Honey, 8 ½, has only served to transform the way he approaches his job. Fresh off directing stage productions of The Winter’s Tale and The Cherry Orchard in London, Sam can’t help but observe that life has changed dramatically since he first directed the latter play at the age of 24. “That’s what links it with The Winter’s Tale: the idea of coming to terms with your past, the loss of childhood, and the loss of children that haunts both plays,” he says.

“That’s the thing we most live in fear of. I now know what it feels like to hold a baby, your own child, in your arms. It makes a huge difference and you direct The Winter’s Tale in particular differently.”

Sam and Joe are avid fans of the English professional football club Arsenal, and when they’re not watching football on television they can often be spotted playing the sport in the park. Although Kate’s fame has translated into less privacy for the couple, from the sound of things they aren’t the type to court the attention. Not that Sam is complaining!  Being approached by Kate’s fans is “a small price to pay,” he says, adding,

“We don’t go to premieres when they’re not our own or enjoy big visible parties or galas at the Met. Most of the time it’s just home, family, friends, school, people who see Kate as a mum rather than an actress.”

Mia is Kate’s daughter with ex-husband Jim Threapleton.

Ana Ortiz: Almost Done!

Ramey

So close to the end! Due with her first child — a baby girl — this coming Thursday, Ana Ortiz steps out for lunch at Da Silvano in Greenwich Village on June 15th.

Speaking to CBB last week, we asked the Ugly Betty star how she felt about having to return to set in early July, just weeks after delivering her daughter.

“Honestly I’m nervous about it,” Ana told us. “But I’m also really excited. I’ve gotten so much support on that set. Everybody’s so excited about the baby — I don’t even think I’ll be able to see the kid when I’m on set because everyone will be holding her!”

Sir Elton John Pushed Diana Krall to Start a Family

George Pimentel/WireImage

What would you do if Sir Elton John sat you down and told you to start thinking about having kids? For singer Diana Krall, she listened! Diana hadn’t thought much about parenthood, busying herself in the recording studio and caring for her mother, Adella, who passed away from bone cancer in 2002. However, when she found herself in love with musician Elvis Costello a year later, the couple’s friend Elton sat her down for a little chat.

“He says, ‘Diana, you’re 39 you’re going to be 40. You better start thinking about having kids,’ and I went, ‘Right … .’ But usually, you’d have a parent, your mom would tell you that.”

Taking the singer’s advice to heart, Diane and Elvis began trying for children, welcoming fraternal twin sons Dexter Henry Lorcan and Frank Harlan James, now 2 ½, in December 2006. Becoming a parent herself allowed Diana to “feel my mother back in me,” she explains. Taking the twins on the road with her for much of her current tour, the songstress notes that Elvis pulls his weight as well!

“We’re equal parents. He’s home with them now with Vancouver, and he looks after then when I have to go to Washington to play for the president.”

The 44-year-old’s latest album, Quiet Nights, was released on March 31st.

Salsa For Kittens And Puppies: Hola, Perrito!

Salsa for Kittens and Puppies aka Salsa Para Gattitos Y Perritos ($16) is a board book with a music CD that introduces little ones to some great salsa-styled tunes.

The music CD has 16 tracks of salsa including renditions of the alphabet song and Old MacDonald and my kids both love listening to it in the car. I’m all about music that doesn’t make the driver go half mad, and my favorite track is “Aresenio Ruf Ruf,” about a Cuban guitar player. My 3 ½-year-old son Finn likes to read along in the book to the Story of Otis the Cat and His Special Sauce. We’re definitely playing the steering-wheel bongos to this one.

Baby on the Way! Soap Stars Reveal How They Learned the News

Juan Rico/Fame Pictures

Some of the best memories for dads often accompany the words ‘I’m pregnant.’ In honor of Father’s Day, Soap Opera Digest asked seven daytime stars to show how they learned that they were going to be a dad — and their answers will make you laugh and smile.

  • Peter Reckell (Days of Our Lives; dad to Loden Sloan, 19 months) — “Kelly gave me a box wrapped in a box and I thought, ‘What the heck? It’s not my birthday. It’s not close to our anniversary.’ It was the proof that she was pregnant. That was the first part. The second part was the blood test at the doctor. When she called me with that result, I was with my dad and my brother Tim snowmobiling in Montana. We had stopped at the top of a mountain for lunch and she was ecstatic. I thought, ‘Wow, my life is changing.’”
  • Eric Martsolf (Days of Our Lives; dad to twins Mason Alan and Chase Evan, 3) — “We had been trying for a while, and Lisa called me up immediately and told me while I was at work. When we went to the doctor’s office to confirm it a couple of weeks later, that’s when he looked at us and said, ‘How do you feel about two?’ And I said, ‘My kid has two heartbeats? It this going to be a problem?’ And Lisa and the doctor looked at me and the doctor said, ‘Mr. Martsolf, you’re having twin boys.’”

Thalía 'Always Knew' She Would Have a Daughter

Jimmy Lenner, Jr.

Parenthood has forced Thalía and her husband Tommy Mottola to slow down, and during a recent appearance on The Today Show the 37-year-old songstress says it has been a welcome change. “He is such a great daddy and you know, we are in a time of our lives where we enjoy being parents,” she says. “Before I was working a lot, he was working a lot…but now it’s about the family. It’s about the baby.” That baby — 20-month-old Sabrina Sakaë — was not a delivery surprise, though to hear Thalía tell it there was never any question what she was carrying.

“Intuitively I always knew it was a girl, and I always knew she was Sabrina.”

Unfortunately, her intuition was not as prescient when it came to pregnancy and life postpartum! In what she dubs a “secret society,” Thalía says that moms do themselves a disservice by not being fully forthcoming with other moms. “Nobody prepares you for those moments after you have a baby,” she laments. “The pains, the aches, how long it takes to recover after all of this process…Nobody really prepares you for the whole thing.” In her new book Thalía: Radiante! Thalía hopes to buck that trend by focusing on the positive aspects of pregnancy while also being honest with expectant moms.

“Every book that I read when I was pregnant was scary and negative and everything was very technical. What about the spiritual part? What about the yoga? What about the being positive? What about the eating right? What about the fashion?”

The book also contains tips for overcoming morning sickness and eating healthy, as well as numerous recipes — including one for Thalía’s signature ‘mommygranate’ mimosa mocktail! “While you’re pregnant you have to give yourself a chance to have some fun,” she says with a smile.
