Marion and Tabitha: Behind the Parker-Broderick's Name Choices

Paul Schmulbach/Globe Photos

The birth of twins Marion Loretta Elwell and Tabitha Hodge by surrogate on Monday afternoon had the CBB comments hopping! Among the congratulatory messages for Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick was a divisive discussion about the girls’ names — some loved, some hated, and some were reminded of their pet cats! We spoke to Linda Rosenkrantz and Pamela Redmond Satran, authors of Beyond Ada & Aiden and webmistresses of nameberry.com about the history behind the names. Here are their thoughts:

“Sarah Jessica is known for her individual style, and wouldn’t be expected to simply follow current trends — after all, she and husband Matthew named their first child the classic James. So, while many parents claim to want names that are ‘unique,’ the couple managed to come up with a pair that are truly distinctive, that sound cool and yet are not overused or gimmicky.

Unlike parents who seek similar names for their twins — especially same-sex pairs! — Sarah Jessica and Matthew have opted for names that are very different, almost opposite in style and feel. What they do have in common is that neither is particularly popular or trendy right now — in fact, Marion peaked way back in the 1880s.

A French medieval variation of Marie, Marion has a solid, serious image, and is the kind of traditional name more and more parents are starting to reconsider these days. Tabitha, a New Testament name that came onto the American baby-name radar following the introduction of the cute little girl with supernatural powers on the TV show Bewitched, still retains some of her slightly quirky charm.

It’s a little unusual for twins not to be given the same number of names — Marion has two middles and Tabitha just one, with both Elwell and Hodge coming from the actress’ family tree.

In terms of sound, both names have three syllables and a soft ‘a’ sound, making them consistent in that respect — if a bit of a mouthful when they’re being called in for dinner!”

What are your thoughts on the Broderick babies’ names?

Ana Ortiz: Bags Are 'Mostly' Packed!

Robert Pitts/Landov

The last month of pregnancy can be agony as an expectant mom waits for labor to begin, and many will pass the hours by preparing for the time they’ll spend away from home. Ana Ortiz tells OK! that she, too, will be ready to roll when the magic moment arrives! “The bag is packed – mostly,” she says. “I need to get some toothbrushes.” One thing the 38-year-old Ugly Betty star likely won’t be needing is a crash diet or extra hours in the gym to reclaim her pre-baby body. Reveals Ana,

“Because they didn’t write [my pregnancy] into the show, it was kind of important to me to try to stay as much in shape as possible. It’s the first time I ever worked with a trainer because I didn’t know how far to push everything.”

Although she shot the third season of her hit ABC show while pregnant and begins shooting season four in a few weeks, not all of her professional endeavors have been so accommodating. “I was actually gonna audition for [Broadway's Chicago] and then I got pregnant,” she admitted, adding that she will “definitely” try out for the parts of Roxie or Velma after she delivers.

Baby-on-the-way — a girl — is due Thursday, and will be the first child for Ana and husband Noah Lebenzon.

Ellen DeGeneres Says Kids Are Not In the Cards

Lester Cohen/WireImage

Since tying the knot last August, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have found themselves in the center of the rumor mill, with constant reports that the two will be getting a visit from the stork soon. While Portia set the record straight and denied any speculation that the couple was expanding their family back in March, in a new interview with AOL, Ellen clarifies that children may never be in the cards. “No, I don’t think we’re going to have kids,” she says.

“We have animals and we love them. They don’t talk back, and they don’t explore their vocal chords out in public.”

That said, life for the talk show host and her wife, star of Better Off Ted, is filled with newborn cries! Newly crowned aunts after Portia’s brother welcomed a baby girl, the couple are happy to “be a part of that,” but feel completely fulfilled in their marriage — sans baby. “We definitely thought about it,” she reveals.

“But it’s a huge responsibility and I don’t think that’s something we want to take on.”
