i like what she said about the right decision being what is right for the particular mother, and about feeling comfortable and knowledgeable about that decision. i found out i had to have a c-section at week 37. i know it was the safest route for me, which meant the safest route for my baby. but, i do wish i had been more informed about what was happening. my ob didn't tell me what to expect at all. i had no idea about a catheter and arterial lines being put in while i was awake, for instance, so that even though i'd had surgery lots of times before i was panicked. the doctor rolled me away to the OR with me crying and being freaked out was the last memory i had. then i woke up, was separated from my baby until the next day, and had no idea why. next time around i will make sure i know more of what to expect ahead of time.

I loved the Business of Being Born. I had planned a drug-free birth before seeing it, but once I did see the movie I became much less afraid and more confident of the natural process. Everything she said about delivering her baby- she took the words right out of my mouth. It's like no other experience. And I've had both- first was induced and epidural. Second was drug free at a birth center. The drug free birth was so much better and I recovered much faster. Best experience of my life!

Giving birth is definitely not a competition, or a way to build self esteem. What matters is a healthy baby.
