With hair like dad’s and a guitar to match, 3 ½-year-old Jason ‘J.W.’ Weldon Carroll poses with Jason Michael Carroll at the 2009 CMA Music Festival Block Party on Wednesday in Nashville, Tennessee.

J.W., who is named for his father Jason and grandfather Alfred Weldon, made his country singing papa laugh with his concerns over the origins of his name.

“I’ll say, ‘J.W., this is where you got your name. [Your grandfather’s] name was Alfred Weldon… And he gets so concerned every now and again because he’ll look at me and go, ‘But it’s my name now, right?’ [laughs] Like, he’s not takin’ it back, right? Kids say the most amazing things.”

What a cute kid! Until I started reading the article I thought he was a she…OOPS!

Ann on

I thought it was a girl too! LOL

I’m all for boys having long hair…my own son’s hair is quite long. But this boy’s face is so angelic and soft that I absolutely thought he was a girl as well. Perhaps they should alter the long cut so it’s not such a feminine bob?

But he sure does look happy and is absolutely adorable!!!

MZ on

It looks like they curled his hair under with a rolling brush or curling iron…that’s why I thought he was a girl…

That little boy sure is pretty. I keep having to scroll back up to make sure I read correctly that it is a boy

I agree, the boy’s hair is a little feminine. I did want to add though that I met Jason last week and he was extremely nice. Couldn’t have been nicer to my child – posed for pics, talked to him, gave him autograph, etc.

Yeah I thought he was a she too. After looking closer tho, he looks like a boy.

I thought the child was a girl too… I think its sweet that they call him JW. I’m not fond of juniors.

I was going to say what a lovely little kid but the ever present HAIR comments have put me right off.

I will CB.com would insist anyone who posts snide comments about how a child looks must post a picture of their own child for everyone else to comment on. See how you like it.

I also thought it was a girl. Too pretty to be a boy and the hair doesn’t help.

I think it’s funny that people come here and get upset with other people’s post. This is what blogs are for. To post pictures and comment. As long as people are stating what they like in a respected manner I don’t see why it bothers people so much!! We are not celebrities who put our children in the public eye for the world to see so there is a huge difference. And I highly doubt any celebrity cares too much for what we CBB viewers think.

Adorable child!! I’m embarrassed that I, too, thought he was a girl. The hair and the shorts that looked like a denim skirt at first glance made me think he was a she. Oops.

I have to say, normally I do not have any problem with little boys having longer hair, but this child really looks very feminine with that haircut. I am guessing it is at an in between stage of growth, between a little shaggy growth and very long hair like his father’s. Tucking a little bit behind his ear certainly does not help the look. The angle of the photo makes the jean shorts almost look like a jean skirt.

I saw the pic and read “Jason Weldon Carroll” and I was like “wow, that’s the first time I hear of a girl named Jason!”. oops
He’s very cute but the hair does look feminine.

Beautiful little boy.

Colleen I agree, I too thought he had a skirt on at first and thats why I thought he was a girl too! Cute or pretty little guy..

LMAO @ Ellen, wooo saaaaaaaa

No one said anything derogatory or called the child ugly. If I had a son I would rather people say he looked like a girl than to be called ugly. People keep telling me that my dog looks like a girl and I think it’s cute, I can’t do anything about it though, and he is so fluffy that no one sees his black collar.

*hand in air*im guilty too-i’m like,”what a gorgeous gi-……boy.” his fellow preschoolers must get confused sometimes tho.maybe teased too.kids are nasty to the kid who’s different. i LOVE what he said though-don’t take my name!!! lol cute.

I might be a minority here but I don’t see what the big deal is about not instantly guessing a child’s gender. If this little one was 11 or 16 I would absolutely get the issue but at such young age all J.W. has to tell school kids is “I’m a boy”. And adults shouldn’t care at all.If the parents were terrified of having their boy mistaken for a girl surely they would cut their hair and dress him in hyper masculine clothes.

I’m not complaining or saying that people are horrible for thinking he’s a girl.Just stating my opinion. My daughter has super short hair and dresses like a total tomboy, her name is also rather masculine, but she doesn’t mind it when people call her a he when they don’t know her.Once people know what a child’s gender is accept it and move on.

Yeah, little dude! I love your guitar! Aerosmith have ruled my stereo for 18 years.

I soooo thought this was a little girl until I read that it’s actually a boy!!🙂

I think he is adorable just like his dad!! If he grows up to look like Dad he will have no problems telling if he is a girl or boy!!!
