Jill Scott on Motherhood: 'I've Been Reborn'

George Holz for PEOPLE for use on CBB

Since discovering she was expecting her first child, life for Jill Scott has been full of surprises. Faced with a grueling schedule that included 14-hour work days in Africa while filming The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency — made easier “knowing that my son was getting to experience Africa even if he wasn’t really aware of it” — while pregnant, the actress was met with a much more pleasant surprise come delivery day. “I feel like I’ve been reborn. The experience of being a mother is so remarkably special and different from anything else in life,” Jill tells Black Voices.

“Giving birth is such a cleansing experience that I feel like a brand new woman.”

Despite her rough pregnancy, the proud new mama gushes that life with her son Jett Hamilton, 5 weeks, has been nothing short of “incredible from start to finish.” With a new found sense of inspiration from Jett “to be the best mother that I can be,” 37-year-old Jill can’t help but feel “blessed” by the gift of motherhood. “It might sound clichéd, but I never thought I would have as much love for anyone as I do for my new baby,” she says. “I feel so loving and full of life.”

With her eyes set on becoming a mother, Jill had her expectations for herself set very high. After being raised by “very strong women,” the new mama hopes to have the same influences on her baby boy, teaching him to love both himself and others. “I always hoped that I would make a strong and amazing mother,” she shares. According to Jill, both mother and son are learning together!

“I’ve been forced to be much more responsible and thoughtful about life, in general, and how everything affects my baby. It’s been a wonderful growing experience though.”

Although Jett is still very young, Jill has become all too aware of the reality many working moms face as they try to maintain a balance between their career and their families. While she is adamant about “trying to enjoy it all and try my hardest,” her priorities are quite clear: after having “always dreamed” of being a mother, baby Jett is at the top of her list. “To balance it all will be hard, but my son always comes first and then everything else comes after,” she explains.

Jett is Jill’s son with drummer Lil Jon Roberts.

Mike Tyson's Daughter Passes Away After Accident

Debbie VanStory/Abaca

Update: Exodus passed away at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz. “Our sympathies go out to the family,” says Phoenix police Sgt. Andy Hill.

“We are grateful for the tremendous outpouring of love and prayers from all over the world,” Mike says in a statement.

“There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Exodus. We ask you now to please respect our need at this very difficult time for privacy to grieve and try to help each other heal.”

Update Tuesday a.m.: The family has released a statement, which reads:

“The Tyson family would like to extend our deepest and most heartfelt thanks for all your prayers and support, and we ask that we be allowed our privacy at this difficult time.”

Originally posted May 25th: In what police are describing as a “tragic accident,” Exodus Tyson — the 4-year-old daughter of boxer Mike Tyson — was critically injured Monday after becoming ensnared in a treadmill cable at her home in Phoenix. According to reports she was discovered hanging from the cable at approximately 10:30 a.m. by her 7-year-old brother, who alerted their mother in a nearby room. Exodus’ mom removed the cable and called 911.

While details are scarce, Police Sgt. Andy Hill tells FOX News,

“Somehow she was playing on this treadmill, and there’s a cord that hangs under the console – it’s kind of a loop. Either she slipped or put her head in the loop, but it acted like a noose, and she was obviously unable to get herself off of it.”

Responding emergency personnel performed CPR on Exodus, who was rushed to St. Joe’s Hospital where she reportedly remains on life support. Reps for Mike — who flew to Phoenix from Las Vegas upon learning of the accident — have thus far refused to comment on Exodus’ condition, which Sgt. Hill characterizes as “extremely critical.”

Brooke Shields: Children Challenge a Marriage

Courtesy Health

In the June issue of Health magazine, Brooke Shields says that the biggest myth of marriage is that love conquers all. “It’s not practical,” the 43-year-old actress explains. “Without love, I don’t think it’s possible, but it’s not the only thing.” For example, Brooke points out that a couple with “completely different views” on how to raise their children have the odds stacked against them, regardless of the love they may feel for one another.  She adds,

“Love can produce the children, but it has nothing to do with the raising of the children. I grew up thinking, ‘Oh, that’s it. All I have to do is fall in love.’ You may think love will change everything, but it really is different with children. Children don’t necessarily bring you together, they challenge you.”

Taking time out of her busy day for husband Chris Henchy is a priority for Brooke, and in turn, it was Chris who convinced Brooke to take time out for herself. “I used to do a million different things when I was breastfeeding, and finally my husband was like, ‘What are you doing? Don’t you think you’re missing out?’” Brooke — mom to Rowan Francis, 6, and Grier Hammond, 3 — reveals. “I thought I was being productive, and it wasn’t until I stopped doing all that, and…I’m gonna start to cry. But, watching her little cheeks go in and out, that’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen in my life.”

“And I took a deep breath, and my milk came in more. I have to remind myself all the time, things are just too busy.”

To that end, Brooke says her life is “as balanced as it’s going to be.” When she is feeling overwhelmed, it is exercise that “reinvigorates” her, but finding time for a hike in the hills isn’t always easy; The loss of freedom many women lament after welcoming a child is one that Brooke can identify with. However, Brooke questions the accuracy of her memory! “I sort of think, how often did I really do it? How spontaneous was I really?” she asks. “Part of what I think I miss is this fantasy of my wild days [laughs], but they never existed!”
