Robin Wright Penn on Raising Children in the Digital World

Jeff Vespa/WireImage

Teenagers are naturally curious beings, and nothing piques their interest like the unknown. That’s why Robin Wright Penn says that, conversely, her own two teenagers — Dylan Frances, 18, and Hopper Jack, 15 — aren’t overly interested in fame or celebrity. “I mean, they buy their trash mags and watch Entertainment Tonight and all that stuff,” she tells the May issue of Gotham magazine. “But I think it’s so boring because they’ve lived it for so long, that it’s not of interest.”

Both kids “are Facebook-oriented” with their friends, which Robin and her estranged husband Sean Penn support — with an abundance of caution.

“We’re always telling them, ‘Be cautious, just watch out, because you never know….’ It can get so out of hand, I think. But it’s the new world — texting and e-mailing versus conversation.”

In her new movie The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, the 43-year-old actress depicts a character struggling to connect with her teenage daughter. Noting that “girls are hard,” as the mother of both a son and a daughter Robin shares her insight. “Girls are more complicated in a different way,” she explains. “I feel like boys kind of wear their heart on their sleeve, and because it’s on their sleeve it’s immediate what they feel: ‘I hate you. OK, I don’t hate you anymore, I’m sorry. This is why I hated you.’ And it’s over.”

“It’s the gender thing — trying to communicate, being understood. Mothers with daughters, there’s such a push-pull.”

Comedienne Teresa Strasser Searches For Suitable Pregnancy Phrases

Landov

When comedienne Teresa Strasser found out she was expecting her baby boy on October 2nd, she paid little attention to the date. However, curiosity soon had Teresa doing some digging. Her discovery? That baby boy — if he arrives on the anticipated day — will be sharing his birthday with none other than Gandhi and Groucho Marx! “I guess this means he’ll either be staging vaudeville acts, or acts of civil disobedience,” she notes.

At four months, Teresa laughs that her son is “almost halfway cooked,” but despite plenty of time to contemplate her growing belly, she has yet to find a suitable word — apart from ‘preggers’ — for the pregnancy.

“‘Expecting’ is overly wholesome and formal, whereas ‘knocked up’ is now too Seth Rogen for me. ‘I have a bun in the oven’ or ‘I’m with child’ aren’t even worth considering. And somehow, ‘carrying a developing fetus’ is just clunky. If anyone has solved this problem, please let me know.”

Using her pregnancy as inspiration for her new blog — Exploiting My Baby — Teresa jokes that there is little sense in having a child “if I can’t exploit the experience for some content.” Joking aside, the expectant mama defends her decision to tackle the journey as a writer, saying that, these days, the pregnancy has pushed all else far from her mind. “Pregnancy is like nine months of acquired situational narcissism, it’s all about us and we want to make sure we’re normal,” she tells LAist.

With “every little cramp or worry or symptom” leading Teresa to the internet, she hopes her new site “will be a place to do what I’ve always tried to do as a writer: tell the truth, even when it makes me look like an a–hole.”

Baby-on-the-way will be the first for Teresa and her husband, Daniel Wachinski.

Justin Chambers on the Importance of Building Confidence From Within

Jordan Strauss/WireImage

During the ’Hot Topics’ segment of Wednesday’s The View, talk turned to Bristol Palin‘s outspoken advocacy of abstinence. Guest Justin Chambers appeared later on in the show, and was asked by co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck how he and wife Keisha plan to broach the topic with their four daughters — Isabella, 14, twins Maya and Kaila, 12, and Eva, 10.

Revealing that the couple have indeed had the “sex talk” with Isabella, Justin says “it’s something you’ve got to do at home; Talk to your kids, and hope for the best.” He elaborates,

“You just hope that you instill values with your kids. That you give them enough self worth that they don’t need the approval of another to feel worthy.”

The 38-year-old Grey’s Anatomy star went on to note,

“You don’t own them. They’re on loan, and you try your best.”

In addition to the girls, Justin and Keisha are parents to 7-year-old Jackson.

Heidi Klum on Her Crafty Family: 'They're the Cutest!'

Ramey

With Mother’s Day being celebrated today, Heidi Klum is stocking up on the tissue boxes! While she’s spending the day with her brood — Leni, 5, Henry, 3 ½, and Johan, 2 — the supermodel laughs to Ocean Drive magazine that her day is never complete without shedding a few tears, albeit happy ones! “Usually they make something for me, and I have to cry because they’re the cutest,” the expectant mama reveals.

“I’m a tough woman, but when it comes to my kids, forget about it; I’m always in tears.”

Homemade gifts aren’t unusual in the Klum-Samuel household, with the threesome decorating small planter pots for last year’s Mother’s Day celebration. “That’s how we are; we’re a very arts-and-craftsy family,” Heidi shares. Fortunately for the children, with dad Seal‘s schedule often filled with days spent on the road, they’re provided the prime opportunity to break out the markers! “We include the kids in all the holidays and when Papa comes back from a concert we make signs that say welcome home,” she reveals.

“He’s always coming and going, and the kids understand it and know that when he comes back it will be something special.”

Heidi and Seal expect their next child, a daughter, in October.
