Julianne Moore Debuts Freckleface Strawberry and the Dodgeball Bully

Donato Sardella/Courtesy of Ralph Lauren – Julianne wears Ralph Lauren Black Label dress, Ralph Lauren Blue Label sweater, Ralph Lauren Collection belt and sandals

On Mother’s Day afternoon, actress and children’s book author, Julianne Moore appeared at the Ralph Lauren Children’s Store on Robertson Boulevard to read and sign copies of her most recent picture book, Freckleface Strawberry and the Dodgeball Bully.

Julianne and bestselling illustrator LeUyen Pham combine talents again for the most recent Freckleface Strawberry story. This time their perky, loveable seven-year-old encounters a bully on the playground — Windy Pants Patrick — during a game of dodgeball.

Mothers and children, including Laura Dern and Milla Jovovich, along with 18-month-old Ever Gabo, joined Pilar Guzmán — Editor-in-chief of Cookie Magazine — for this special reading followed by an afternoon of treats — including exclusive Sprinkles cupcakes — and activities including face painting, balloon artistry and more Freckleface fun. Fifteen percent of the event’s sales benefited Save the Children.

Nancy O'Dell on Ashby's Guardian Angel

Richie Buxo/Splash News Online

When her mom Betty Humphries was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in November 2007, Nancy O’Dell‘s thoughts turned immediately to her then 5-month-old daughter Ashby Grace, now 23-months. “I just kept telling her that I needed her and that Ashby needed her,” Nancy recalls in a new interview with WebMD magazine. “I told her she had to fight with everything she had.” While Betty eventually lost her battle, Nancy considers it “a huge blessing” that she got to meet her new granddaughter. “I know that Ashby now has an angel looking out for her,” Nancy says. Her mom’s presence is still missed, of course, but Nancy says she hopes to replicate their “extremely close” relationship as much as possible with Ashby.

“I wish I could call her up and tell her that Ashby is doing this or doing that. I could talk to my mom about anything. I never felt like I had to sneak out and I never wanted to participate in anything dangerous because I didn’t want to disappoint my parents…This is the type of relationship I hope to build with my daughter.”

The love she feels for Ashby is something Nancy, 43, admits caught her off-guard. “This is a love like you have never experienced before,” she notes. “I can’t possibly explain how much I love this person.”

“With the love, comes a lot of worry. My mom was a big worrier. She always said ‘I hope you are not a worrier like me,’ but I am.”

Hugh Jackman and Oscar Give Basketball Another Try

Daniel/Cesar/INF

During his last appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Hugh Jackman recalled his first — ultimately unsuccessful — attempt at introducing son Oscar Maximillian, 9 on Friday, to professional basketball. Telling the story on national television got Hugh thinking that he should try again, however. During an appearance on the same show last week, the 40-year-old actor said that Oscar’s enthusiasm the second time around was much better — he was just enthusiastic for the wrong team!

Father and son sat courtside at Madison Square Garden, which provided them with their tickets, as the New York Knicks battled the Denver Nuggets. “He was sort of into it when we began,” Hugh recalled.

“He said, ‘Dad, who’s everyone going for?’ I said…’Everyone here will traditionally go for [the Knicks]‘. He goes, ‘Right…Go Nuggets! Go Denver!’”

Oscar’s love of the Nuggets only intensified as the game went on. ”We were given swag by the Knicks to kind of shut him up,” Hugh laughed, including a Knicks hat. “The camera kept coming to me. It was all bad. So he had the hat in his hand and every time the Knicks scored, he was like, [smacking the hat on the ground], going, ‘No, I hate the Knicks!’” After the game, Nuggets shooting guard J.R. Smith was so impressed with Oscar’s display, he gave him the jersey off his back. “It came down to [Oscar's] ankles…it was like a dress,” Hugh explained. “He wore [when] we walked home…That’s when I thought we were going to get beaten up.” Hugh quipped of his son,

“He loves basketball now, but it’s been very expensive, because we fly to Denver every other week.”

In retrospect, Hugh said that Oscar’s reaction to the game was somewhat predictable. Describing his son as “contrary,” Hugh explains that whatever team he roots for, Oscar often ”goes against it.” Hugh has come up with creative ways for Oscar to work out all that oppositional energy, however. The crew of his new film X-Men: Origins gave Hugh a blow up Wolverine punching bag with Hugh’s face on it and the gift went straight to Oscar, who uses it often when he’s been sent to his room. “It’s cheaper than therapy,” Hugh joked.

In addition to Oscar, Hugh and wife Deborra-Lee Furness are parents to Ava Eliot, 3 ½.
