General Hospital's Rebecca Herbst Feeling a 'Baby Void'

Jen Lowery/Startraks

General Hospital‘s Rebecca Herbst‘s babies are growing up, and like many moms, the actress is having a difficult time coping. Her and husband Michael Saucedo‘s youngest child, 5-year-old Ella, will be going into kindergarten this August and the actress admits that she “doesn’t know what I’m going to do with myself.” Rebecca and Michael have even “started to have that conversation about whether we should have more kids” now that Ella and son Ethan, 7 ½, are getting bigger. Deciding against more children for now, the family adopted a new baby — “a 10-week old Shorkie, which is a Shih Tzu/Yorkie mix.” For the time being, the pup is filling the “baby void” that Rebecca is feeling because its needs are close to an infants! “She wakes up in the middle of the night, every two hours,” Rebecca laughs.

While she may not have help with raising the puppy, Rebecca feels lucky that she has had “a lot of help from my family” when it comes to raising Ethan and Ella. “My parents, Debbie and Wayne, and my sister, Jennifer, are instrumental in my children’s lives, which is such a gift,” shares the General Hospital star. She also believes that Michael “is the greatest dad in the world. He is always there for them.” Rebecca relies on all of them for help because “between my work schedule and kids, there’s no consistency in my life.”

“It’s day to day: Who’s going to take them to school? Who’s going to pick them up? Lately, I’ve been taking Ella to work with me. But every day, it’s ‘What’s the plan for today? How are we going to work this out?’ Especially now that Ethan and Ella are doing karate three times a week. But that’s how I like to live my life. Monotony is not for me.”

Despite the crazy life, Rebecca wouldn’t change it for anything — especially because her kids take time out at random moments to show her how much they love her. “They can be in the middle of karate class and  look at me and blow me a kiss,” Rebecca explains. “Just that little acknowledgment, with all their friends around — I live for those moments.”

Some moments, however, make her want to wring her hands! “Ethan is not afraid of anything. When he was about three, he came to me and said, ‘Don’t worry, Mom. I washed all the black off of my hands.’” When she asked him to show her where the black came from, “he took me to the living room and my outlet, and all the way up the wall was completely black. He stuck a paper clip in there. I had all those baby-proof plastic plugs in the outlets, but he unplugged the lamp and stuck it in.” Rebecca just continues to try her best and is thankful that Ella isn’t as curious as her big brother. “If she were that age at the time, she would have told him that he was crazy and she would have come and told me. Typical boy/girl.”

Rebecca and Michael met on the set of General Hospital and have been married since 2001.

KidCards: Kid-Crafted Greetings Mean The Most

I’m a stickler for thank-you cards and I think kids should make their own as soon as they’re big enough. KidCards Coloring Cards (20 cards for $15) are one of those, “Why didn’t I think of that?” products. It’s a spiral-bound book of 20 cards for every occasion, plus 20 envelopes.

The cards feature simple designs that make it easy to say, “Happy birthday!” or “Get well soon!” and show off the kids’ artwork. Each card is perforated so it tears neatly and scored for a nice fold and kids can decorate them however they want. My mom thinks my kids’ artworks are true masterpieces, and for 75 cents apiece, they’re much more affordable than mass-produced cards from the drugstore.

Michelle Pfeiffer Puts Kids' Education Before Career

Jason Merritt/FilmMagic

The decision to step away from work to focus on family is one that Michelle Pfeiffer doesn’t regret, for managing a successful acting career and caring for two growing children had become downright impossible. When Claudia Rose, 16, and John Henry, 14, were young, Michelle tells the Chester Chronicle she “actually worked a lot” because she was able to take them with her on location. “It kind of got harder and harder finding projects that didn’t entail me leaving home for long periods of time during the school year,” however, she explains.

“Once they were enrolled in school, I didn’t like the idea of uprooting them or being away from them for long periods.”

The family of four — including Michelle’s husband David E. Kelley — then moved into a new home, an event which proved to be “much bigger” than Michelle anticipated. “Actually, [it was] quite overwhelming,” she admits. “That kept me very occupied and busy, and distracted from my work.”

Once everyone was finally settled in, the 51-year-old actress says she “sort of realized how long it had been” since she had been on set. “I started to miss it and thought it was time to go back,” she adds.

“I decided to come back to work and Hairspray was there, Stardust was there. It’s been really fun and I’ve been lucky to have the opportunities I’ve had, actually my whole career, especially the past few years.”

Michelle’s latest film Cheri opens in limited release next month.

Ziggy Marley Says Kids Are Interested in Nature

Johnny Black

In a new interview with the LA Times, father of five Ziggy Marley reveals his secret for snoozing well into the afternoon. ”Usually I wake up early and sometimes I make them breakfast, sometimes my wife [Orly] makes them breakfast and I can go back to sleep,” he admits. During those early morning hours, Ziggy says that whenever possible Daniel, 19, Justice, 17, Zuri, 13, Judah Victoria, 4, and Gideon Robert Nesta, 2, turn off the television and instead explore the great outdoors. “Outside is very interesting,” he notes. “There’s a whole world there.”

“They show interest in nature…They love to see the trees and the moon and the sun and the stars. They know a lot of things. My little son is always asking questions: ‘What is that? What is that?’ That’s a butterfly, that’s a snail. They’re very interested.”

Next up for the reggae star is a possible children’s book. “I’ve been writing some stories, working on some stories for kids,” he says. “Give me a couple more years.” Noting that with parenthood “you have to do it bad to do it really wrong,” Ziggy adds:

“It’s a natural thing about it — that you want to give love. You want to do the best thing for your children.”

Ziggy’s first children’s album — Family Time — is available now.

Brain Box: How Much Can You Recall In 10 Minutes?

Brain Box ($20) is the 10-minute memory recall game. Study a card for 10 seconds then strain your brain as your opponent asks a list of questions. They have several themed sets so you can become an expert on dinosaurs, football, animals or the world. The All Around the USA set has a card for each state so it would be great for road trips.

How many stars are on the Arizona state flag? (The answer is one.) Brain Box is recommended for ages three and up but it requires reading so it will be better suited for the older ones. You can try the game on the company’s website, too!

Soap Star Kelley Menighan Hensley's Household: 'Controlled Chaos'

Nikki Nelson/WENN

As the World Turns’ Kelley Menighan Hensley‘s household of five can be described in two words —”controlled chaos.” The 42-year-old tries her hardest to keep children Sophie May, 10, Spencer James, 7, and Georgia ‘Gigi’ Grace, 22 months, along with husband, actor Jon Hensley, in line. “I’m the stricter disciplinarian in the house and Jon is the slacker when it comes to that. If Jon and I ever argue, it’s about that,” she explains. In fact, Kelley is so strict that sometimes her kids question her about it! “Spencer was mad at me one day and he said, ‘All you care about is manners. Manners, manners, manners.’ I said, ‘Someday when you’re invited to a princess’ house for dinner, you’ll know how to behave.’ And he looks at me like I’m out of my mind.”

The As the World Turns star is happy with her life and even more thrilled at how Sophie and Spencer adjusted to having a little sister. It turns out that Gigi is “the common denominator between the two of them that really brings them together.” Kelley notes that she “never saw the jealousy thing” towards Gigi; Sophie and Spencer “just love her and she loves them.” Gigi adores her siblings so much that “she screams for them because I don’t get her at night anymore.” Kelley will go and check on her youngest, “but I’m like, ‘I’m not getting you — sleep through the night.’” However, Spencer doesn’t like mom’s methods!

“Spencer used to come running out with his hands on his hips and say, ‘What kind of mother are you? Can’t you hear your child screaming?’ I’m like, ‘Spencer, I’m doing her a favor. I’m teaching her to sleep.’”

Teaching her children to count their blessings is something Kelley takes pride in teaching as well. The actress lies down with her kids at night, calling it “my favorite one-on-one time with each child.” “We just talk about the day,” she explains. “I’ve made it a point since they were old enough to say prayers to talk about what they’re grateful for.” She believes that the kids “get it” and that “they’re at an age where they understand how blessed they are. They have a healthy body and mind and a roof over their heads.” To help her trio understand how fortunate they are in their lives, Kelley has “exposed them to all these different charities I work for … all these sick children that we raise money for and they’re truly a part of it. I think as a result, they will continue to do it as they grow older. I believe that’s one of the best gifts you can give you kids.”

Trisha Yearwood Says Step-Daughters Have 'Varied Taste in Music'

Mark Sullivan/Getty

With Trisha Yearwood for a step-mom and Garth Brooks for a dad, there is no shortage of country star power on hand for Garth’s three daughters Taylor, 16, August, 15, and Allie, 12 ½. Still, the couple don’t allow their own musical tastes to dictate the preferences of the girls. “It’s probably kind of odd for our children to be in a house with two country artists,” Trisha notes, “but we’ve never said this is what you need to listen to because this is what we do.”

As a result, Taylor, August and Allie — Garth’s children with ex-wife Sandy Mahl — have developed ”real varied taste in music,” Trisha reveals, adding:

“They love Taylor Swift of course, but I still love it when we’re in the car and an old country song comes on the radio and they know it. It makes me happy.”

The author of Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen: Recipes from My Family to Yours, Trisha says that family meals remain a priority but with three busy girls all living under the same roof, it’s “sometimes hard to eat together.”

“It’s more like, ‘Here’s what’s going on today, who can make dinner?’ But we really eat home a lot and enjoy eating home cooked meals.”
