Edie Falco Says Music Connects Her to Son and Daughter

Neilson Barnard/Getty

Characterizing herself as an “old-school, embarrassing Joni Mitchell fan,” actress Edie Falco is in good company; Her two children Anderson, 4, and Macy, 15 months, are well-versed in the famed folk singers’ music as well. “I even sing her songs as lullabies to my kids,” Edie, 45, reveals to PARADE. “All I want for them as they’re falling asleep is to be complete in the knowledge of the love I have for them.” She continues,

“Her music made a hook in my soul and hasn’t let go for all these years…And one of the surest things I know is my own love for Joni Mitchell. It seems to somehow connect me to the love I now have for my two children.”

Diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after becoming sober was a one-two punch that left Edie reeling, but she says that she emerged from each battle a stronger woman. “You have to learn to get out of your way,” she explains. “It’s like the situation now with my kids. I have lots of friends and, like me, they’re not married.”

“So my kids have lots of godparents — men and women, gay and straight. My loft is always filled with people helping me out with them and loving them. I never could have planned it as beautifully as it has turned out — this strange, unconventional family I have going on. I don’t feel like a single mother at all.”

Edie goes on to reveal that the decision to adopt was easy. Noting that she’s never been the type of person who felt that having biological children “was that important,” Edie says that instead “it was more about wanting to raise a child.” Her dog Marley — who taught Edie a kind of love she says she’d never known — gave her the motivation to take the plunge. “I have a hard time believing Marley did not come from my body,” Edie says.

“I know that sounds insane, but I feel that connected to her. She made me realize I wanted to adopt children. If I could only find a boyfriend for whom I could buy a can of food and clean up after on the street, I’d be set. Maybe I should put that ad on Match.com.”

Kate Winslet Weighs In on Parenting: 'I'm an Excellent Mother'

Splash News Online

For anyone who ever had doubts, Kate Winslet is setting the record straight when it comes to motherhood. “I’m an excellent mother,” she tells Movies.ie. Defending her role as mother-of-two, the actress admits she was “really, really upset” after reading a recent interview she conducted with Vanity Fair, which quoted her as saying she had spent five months away from her children while filming The Reader. “It was a misquote,” she reveals.

“Who the hell is going to go and leave their children for five months? Obviously not me.”

In fact, Kate says, the entire filming sequence lasted a total of nine weeks and in order to ease the pain of separation, the 33-year-old relied heavily on the producers. “I’m very lucky to be in the position where I can turn to the producers and say, ‘Listen guys, I’ve never been away from my kids before. How are you going to help me?’” she explains.

In the end, Kate was on location for two weeks by herself before being joined by husband Sam Mendes and her two kids Mia Honey, 8 ½, and Joe Alfie, 5; Once the entire crew went on hiatus, the foursome headed home and later returned as a family to wrap up the filming.

Reiterating that she would never leave her kids for an extended period of time — the two week stretch was a family first — Kate laughs that her children can expect their mama to always be around!

“I would never leave my children for five months, no matter whether they’re 5, 15, or 55.”

Mia is Kate’s daughter with ex-husband Jim Threapleton.
