Kate Hudson Gives Ryder a Lift

Ben Tsui/Splash News Online

Sporting a new brunette ‘do, Kate Hudson picks up her son Ryder Russell, 5 ½, for a little closed-eyed cuddle time on the Oklahoma set of A Killer Inside Me last Thursday.

The movie, currently filming in Oklahoma and New Mexico, is based on the book of the same name. Also starring Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba, Kate plays the girlfriend of Casey’s Deputy Sheriff Lou Ford, who becomes sociopathic.

Ryder is Kate’s only child with ex-husband Chris Robinson.

Ryder wears shorts by Splendid.

I think Ryder needs a haircut too. Everytime I see him he looks like a girl. I know Dad is a rock star with long hair but Ryder needs to look like a boy.

- Jo on

I like his hair! (Hers, too!) That cast sure sounds interesting.

- kai on

I agree Jo. Maybe Chris could set an example and get his cut?? (Since I’m not a fan of long hair on grown men either.)

- Lis on

He looks fine. Personally I like that Kate respects what he wants and let’s him wear his hair that way. She’s said that she’d prefer to cut it, but he wants it long like dad. I think that’s incredibly sweet and it’s great to see that Kate knows to pick her battles. Besides his hair is trimmed and taken care of, it’s not messy or scraggly.

- Brandi on

YUK . I agree CUT HIS HAIR already.

- Sue on

I think Ryder may decide to cut his hair one day if he gets teased about it. But if not I doubt he’ll cut it since Dad has long hair. But I agree he could use a trim, Ryder was never one I liked with long hair. Only a few boys can pull it off well.

- JMO on

I agree Brandi. I read that he wants his hair like his Daddys. I like it, I also like that it means something to him. My husband and I have long hair and I expect so will our son. But his hair will always be trimmed and kept up.
How pretty does Kate look??? I really like this picture of them. Plus….it this is the worst thing we have to deal with in the world… I just dont know!

- aurora mia on

Wow for a second there I though Kate Hudson was Kate Winslet. The dark hair works for her.

I think Chris’ hair is fine. In my opinion, long hair on a guy is fine as long as he’s clean about it. If you saw some of the guys I went to high school with, you’d cringe. I swear some of them were conducting science projects on their heads! LOL

- Mina on

Kate Winslet? Hmm, I can see how you would see that, Mina, but in my opinion, I actually had to look twice to make sure this wasn’t actually a picture of DREW BARRYMORE!! Kate Hudson looks shockingly like Drew to me here!! Wow!!

I’m not going to even comment on the debate over Ryder’s hair, but I just have to say, this is a great picture of a mom who clearly adores her little boy! I’ve always thought Kate seemed like a really cool, down-to-earth, loving mother, and this photo is further proof!!

- Sarah on

I thought this was an old picture of Madonna on the set of a movie…

Remember how she looked in A League of their Own?

- Tearra on

I’m not getting why his parents should cut his hair because YOU guys don’t like it.That makes no sense to me.Let the boy have his hair how HE wants it.It’s not hurting anybody and if you guys hate long hair on boys just make sure you cut your sons hair.

- Carmen on

I also thought it looked like an old Madonna pic.

- LP on

Good grief it is just hair. I couldn’t care less if he wore it to his behind. Why is it no one ever grumbles when the little girls get theirs cut into dorky little bobs with bangs? For me I can’t stand those cuts but it isn’t my kid so I don’t offer advice as to how their hair should be styled. When my son was little he had long hair, I am Native American and my husband’s family insisted it be cut. I ignored their advice because I really didn’t care what they though as I am sure Chris and Kate don’t care what people they will never meet think about their son’s hair.

- Belle on

Kate Hudson looks stunning.

- Ria on

Isn’t Ryder a little too old to still be on momma’s hip???

BTW, I like his hair!

- Viv on

Wasn’t Ford Casey’s character name in the Jesse James movie that
he was nominated for an Golden Globe SAG and Oscar..

He looks a lot like Sarah Jessica Parkers son..It must be the new
thing in school these days..

- Marie Snyard on

His hair is fine.
Kate looks like an old Hollywood actress here. Very pretty.

- Meream on

I don’t think a 5 year old child is old enough to decide on his hair style. Obviously it hasn’t been cut – and what 1, 2, or 3 year old has the capacity to decide. Let the boy look like a boy and when he is old enough to make his own decisions, then let him decide to grow/cut his hair. In the mean time – boys should look like boys. I hate seeing a kid and not knowing if it is a boy or girl. It’s just my two cents worth. I hate mullets, and I hate long hair on boys. If a rocker wants long hair, then it is a different story – they are grown men. UGGHHH. Why would the little boy want to cut his hair, long hair is all he knows?

- momto3 on

Thank you, Carmen!!!! Couldn’t had said it better myself.

- Jas on

I just wish I could pick my 4 (almost 5 ) year old up like that. He’s 53 pounds and already 43 inches tall..how did this happen, I just gave birth to him..
My husband’s side of the family is tall, tall, tall..
Who cares about Ryder’s hair. He’s loved, taken care of, healthy..
My boys have long hair and they look cute and they like it and…they’re loved, taken care of, healthy…so who cares!
I just want to pick my 4 year old up like Kate picks up Ryder!

- jk on

@ jk
I know what you mean by not picking up your son like that. My son is 2(going on 3 in sept.) and he is already 48lbs and almost 40 inches long. His father is 6’6″. I ask everyday where my baby went!!!!

- JohnsMom on

Ryder wants to be like his daddy!

My aunt’s 4-year old has hair that stops mid-back. Long beautiful healthy hair…well we are African-American and I guess in our community that’s a big no-no? She is always getting bombarded with other people’s input that she should cut his hair. We’ve heard it all…he looks like a girl, what’s the point of having a boy have so much hair, we’ve even heard it’ll make him a “sissy” etc. What people don’t understand is that he does not want his hair cut! We always here “well he is just a child he shouldn’t have a say so”

What!?!?! He is becoming an individual and we are trying to teach him that he does not have to conform to what society thinks is right for him. My aunt has gotten to the point that she has become defensive about the whole situation and gets rude when people even mention it.

I love little boys with long hair. What exactly does it hurt? He’s happy and healthy and obviously well loved…

- Tearra on

I agree with Carmen 100%!

Since the hair debate seems to come up almost every time there is a picture of Ryder on here, how about just agree to disagree? Everyone is going to have their own opinion.

- Moi on

There we go again. Hair, hair, hair. Can’t we save these comments for the ‘sound offs’?

- Maaike on

Is this really being debated again? People have had a comment about his hair ever since the age of one, or so. Does it look like your personal complaints are actually affecting Chris, Kate, or Ryder? No. He still has long hair.

I think it’s adorable.

I don’t think the length of a boy or man’s hair has anything to do with his masculinity. This isn’t 1950 where society has to adhere to certain gender stereotypes. I’d rather have my son be an individual than sit him down and give him a buzz cut just because I fear people around me will view him as feminine.

- Liliana on

He is too old to be on her hips? What? Is there an age limit to pick up kids or something?

My oldest is 5 and I pick him up sometimes. And I pick my 3 year old as well.

And my son has shoulder lenght hair, yeah, someone give me a trophy for mom of the year, hahahaha.

- Amy on

And the award for best mom of the year goes to… Amy!:)

Chris Robinson should cut his hair to “set an example”?? Really? And quit music to work in a bank? Ridiculous. I’m off to watch some Black Crowes videos now.

- kai on

hehe, funny stuff, the hair debate! It really is no one’s business, but everyone is entitled to thier opinion. Thank goodness we live in a society in which we can express them! Anyway, I totally agree Tearra, Kate does look like
Madonna in ‘A League of their Own’. It’s a 1940′s hairstyle. She looks really pretty!

- emilyc on

Tearra- I agree! From early in my childhood right up until a couple years ago, I had very short hair and everyone mistook me for a boy (and looking back at pictures of myself with short hair, I can see why. I DID look like a boy!). However, did my parents force me to grow my hair out just so I would look like a girl? No, they did not! They respected my decision to have short hair. A couple of years ago, I finally made the decision to grow my hair out, which I am very happy with.

I have come to prefer my hair long, and have vowed never to cut it so short again! :)

- CelebBabyLover on

Hair looks more auburn to me than brunette, must be the lighting, lol.

At any rate, it really works on her. Stunning!

- De on

I am so excited they have been filming this film here in OK :) I wanted to go see them filming the other day but I’m sure things are crazy up in Guthrie where they have been! I love this picture of them…so sweet :)

- Manda Jo on

Aww he is always soo cute ! I’m Really loving Kate with the dark hair…and um it’s also really sad that everyone feels the need to criticize a 5 year old child…If you don’t like boys with long hair, cut your kids hair..If you do then let it grow out. But come on people…Different strokes for different folks. It’s what makes the world interesting…just my 2 cents
