On the Road With Gavin & Kingston Rossdale

Mia Silbaugh snapped this photo of the pair watching a movie on the bus on April 14th in Seattle. “Sometimes he says, ‘Don’t sing tonight, Daddy, just hang out,’” laughs Gavin.

From art museums to dingy dressing rooms, movie marathons on the bus to summer music festivals in front of thousands, Gavin and Kingston Rossdale have seen it all — together.

“It’s been a really bonding experience,” Gavin tells PEOPLE of taking his toddler son on the first leg of his U.S. tour. “He likes hanging out. He’s so natural, so easy.”

Gavin, who is on the road until June 7th in support of his album Wanderlust, has found a happy balance between his home and work lives.

“I love playing shows. It makes for a dynamic life,” says the British rocker, 43. “If Bob Marley could have a wicked home life and 14 children and then go out and play, why can’t I?”

“For anyone who has kids, you bring them along in your life and they adapt to where you’re at,” adds Gavin. “You keep them fed and rested and pay lots of attention to them and they’re fine.”

Life on Tour

In between interviews and radio station visits during the day, Gavin and Kingston, 3, hit kid-friendly spots along their tour route, like the Seattle Aquarium or the Maine Discovery Museum in Bangor, Maine. “And sometimes we’ll go to museums of modern art so he can see a big splash of color on the walls,” says the former Bush frontman.

They also make up new games together. “I found a way to kill some time in New York by asking him to look out the window and tell me every time he saw a yellow taxi,” says Dad with a chuckle. “He was so into it. We had a really good time.”

The guys also bond — and clash — over movie time on the bus. “He likes to watch the same thing over and over. For King, basically it’s The Cat in the Hat, Over the Hedge and Cars,” says Gavin. “We went through The Polar Express. I could have been in that film, I know it by heart!”

Adds the doting dad: “I’ve got loads of surf videos. Now he uses the phrase ‘that’s boring.’ He’ll turn it off — he knows how to operate the DVD player.”

After gigs, Gavin unwinds with books including D.M. Thomas’ The Bleak Hotel, Ted Hughes poetry (“In case I have a short attention span”), and works by Charles Bukowski and Christopher Hitchens.

A Family Affair

Kingston hit the road with his dad in April and early May before joining mom Gwen Stefani, 39, and baby brother Zuma, 9 months, on No Doubt’s summer tour a few weeks ago.

Despite their seemingly unconventional lifestyle, touring suits the Stefani-Rossdale family quite well. “We keep Kingston on West Coast time when we’re on the East Coast. He normally goes to bed at 8. It’s all about his comfort and everything else is second,” says Gavin, adding that his son, who wears protective headphones, likes to rock out on the drums during sound checks and often imitates Dad on air guitar as he watches a performance from the back of a venue.

As for trading touring tips and tricks with his wife? “We’re both too exhausted to discuss it,” says Gavin with a laugh. “We’re both commandos. You just find a way like every other parent. There’s nothing unique about that.”

Gavin says his oldest son is lucky because he can accompany his parents on the job. “He sees that it’s a lot of effort and a lot of work too. My own father was working all the time, from 8 in the morning till 8 in the night, five, six days a week,” he says. “Kingston sees that if you want to get something done, you have to work.”

Whether Kingston will follow in his parents’ famous footsteps remains to be seen. “We’d support anything he wants to do. It’s just such a wide world. Maybe he’ll want to be an architect and build buildings. That,” says Gavin, “would be cool.”

aww Kingston with his old hair!! I miss him like that :(

But it must be so cool to be on tour with your dad. What great memories he’ll have.

- JMO on

That seems like it must be so much fun for a 3-year-old! Good for Kingston.

- Ryo on

I like his old hair better too and an adventure like that must be so great for a 3-year-old. I saw Gwen taking Kingston on-stage on the day of his birthday so that she and the crowd could sing Happy Birthday to King.
Gwen and Gavin look like such great parents

Happy Birthday little King!

There’s just something about Gavin Rossdale… a bit too much “professional dad”. I don’t know, can’t put my finger on it but not a fan!

It’s lovely that he spend so much time with King but I’ve barely heard him mention Zuma. Zuma is 9 months old all the same and not a tiny infant. Of course he would not take him on the road as he is breast fed but he comes across as a father of one.

I know views are not encouraged on this site but that’s how it seems to me! Sorry in advance for expressing an opinion!

“For anyone who has kids, you bring them along in your life and they adapt to where you’re at,” adds Gavin.

—————————–
ABSOLUTLY….My husband and I made a concious decision NOT to completly change our lifestyle when we had kids. Kids adapt…I travel every weekend and most weekends I have a couple of my kids with me. I hear it all from “How could you take them so far from home?” to “MINE would NEVER sleep anywhere but their own bed.” Well…mine just adapted, they enjoy meeting new people, love driving (as much as 8 hours each way in a car).

I think sometimes people get so wrapped up in changing everything and making it perfect in everyone elses eyes they forget to be the family that they were…

- Courtney on

I love that, too.. I have a great adventurous & active life and I plan to take my kid along for the ride as well. I was totally inspired seeing Kingston on the tour. He was so happy and having fun with dad. They are such a loving family :)

- Rachel from Boston on

I can understand wanting to take your child with you but Kingston is 3 years old, shouldn’t he be going to preschool and learning stuff to prepare him for kindergarten? It just seems a little bit much for him to have to deal with to be traveling to all these different cities at such a tender age. Just my opinion!

- Kim on

Maybe Gwen and Gavin will like to turn back time when King and Zuma are older. Its a great idea to take them everywhere but being toghether is also important, imagine the moments Gavin will miss for being away from Zuma and Gwen will also miss being with Kingston.

Just my opinion, in fact they look like a great family and Zuma along with his bro are so cute!

- Montzie on

My parents traveled all the time for work and would just take me and my brothers with them.We adapted easily and it was amazing.I have friends all over and love traveling.

- ma74 on

Gwen and Gavin seem to have this parenting thing figured out. It’s refreshing. Kingston reminds me of my son.

- Sarah on

You’re only young once and Kingston just turned 3 so I don’t think school is a worry right now. Kids grow up to fast anyways and if Gwen and Gavin have to work (like many parents do) I think it’s better to have them with them then at home with a nanny all day and night. I’m sure once Zuma and Kingston reach school age years they’ll settle down a bit. Zume and King are not the only kids to grow up with touring parents!

- JMO on

In my opinion, kids don’t get to be kids anymore – he’s only turned 3 today and yet people are already pushing to put him in PRESCHOOL to prepare for KINDERGARTEN which he’ll attend when he’s FIVE. You only have a few years with your kids before they’re gone all day; why not let them enjoy them with Kingston?

- Ryo on

This was probably a sweet deal for Kingston. He didn’t have to share dad’s attention with his new little brother!

- Chris on

Not only that, but, there is such a thing as HOMESCHOOLING. Many kids I know that are HS are better prepared for Kinder than ones that went to an actual preschool. Goes for the Jolie-Pitts too. Raise your kids your way; they’ll raise theirs their way. Not everyone wants the white picket fence and playgroups on Mondays and Wednesdays with dinner @ 6 PM everyday. JMO.

- NLT on

It’s not as though Kingston is totally separated from Gwen (and Zuma from Gavin) several weeks or months…. Kingston was just at Gwen’s show the other night, where she had the crowd sing happy birthday to him. Each boy may mainly tour with one parent, but Gwen and Gavin obviously make it a priority to make sure all 4 spend time together too.

Kingston is adorable; he must be having a blast just being a rockstar with his dad!

- alice jane on

I don’t see a problem with having the child with him but he makes no mention of missing his 9 month old or rarely mentions him at all.

Also, I find he is a little public about his son in a sense. The male equivalent of Tori Spelling or Brooke Burke! At the end of the day all these children seem loved (although what about the bonding with Zuma?!) but just not a style of parenting I find completely appealing…

- Manon on

I’m sure Gavin had missed/misses Zuma while on tour- he did explain that Zuma needs the milk from Mommy which was why the baby remained with Gwen. Gavin was simply sharing in the life with his son on the road, I believe this was the first time Kingston had tour with his father after he had been on tour with Gwen many times during her solo and now with No Doubt.

Kingston and Zuma are not the first touring kids with musical parents nor would they be the last. Paul and Linda McCartney pretty much started the family-on-tour thing, they had a tutor for the kids and saw it as a geography lesson of seeing the world’s different cultures and things like that. Paul even continued it with Beatrice when she was a baby in 2004 and 2005 tours although he hadn’t really toured since his divorce (but has made many performance dates).

Rockers Mates of State (a great band) tour with their two kids and blog about it here:

I love Kingston and Zuma!! They’re soooooo cute!! Gavin and Kingston seem really close and I like that he doesn’t just leave Kingston with a nanny all the time. Also I know it’s not shown here but I LOVE Kingston’s new hair!
