When East Coast actor John Callahan learned that his ex-wife, actress Eva LaRue, was planning to move to the West Coast with the couple’s daughter Kaya McKenna, it meant only one thing — “I was moving to California,” he laughs. John didn’t mind because, as he says, “the reason I’m still alive and happy is this 7-year-old.”

Despite the divorce, John and Eva “get along great now” — the actor would sometimes even stay at his ex-wife’s home when working on Days of Our Lives in Los Angeles. “I would stay there if I had to work two days in a row and I got to see Kaya even more during the week as opposed to the weekends,” he notes. “It really worked out for many reasons. The Days studio is only minutes away from Kaya’s mom.”

“I waited a long time to have my daughter and I’ve never been happier,” John, 55, explains. The pair love spending time together and try to make the most of the time they see each other. “She’s happy when she’s here and that’s the bottom line,” says the actor. “Tomorrow we’re going to go hiking up in the canyon where there’s a 60-foot waterfall and we just hang around and do really simple things together.”

John and Eva met on the set of All My Children and were later married but divorced in 2005. Kaya is their only child.

I love it when a couple splits up they are still able to have a good relationship. They seem like great parents and it is AWESOME that he moved across the country to be with his daughter–not like my father who, after he left my mom, moved across the country to get away from us. HIS LOSS!!

Oh, I was hoping to see a pic of what Kaya looks like. I watch “All My Children” and remember when they got married. Even though they are not married anymore, I am glad they get along..It’s very good for Kaya to see. My parents broke up when I was young; always bickering and fighting. Not good.. My hat is off to you, John, for moving, for your daughters’ sake, to be closer to where she lives.. Bravo!! I’ll get off my soapbox now…

I love the name kaya

I loved his character on All My Children, and his relationship with Maria (who was played by his real-life wife, at the time) was amazing. I was sad when they got divorced and left the show 😦 It’s nice, though, that they make their daughter their first priority.

I was just wondering if he still keeps in contact with his other children from a previous marriage, I never hear him talk about them I only hear him talk about Kaya.

Lovely name. I think the children from his first marriage were stepchildren, I don’t know what his relationship is with them now.

I thought John and Eva were such a cute couple, I was sad to hear when they broke up, but I am glad they have a good relationship now for the sake of their daughter.

Kaya is a beautiful child, I wish they had more pics of her on this site, but she’s a great mix of both parents and with pretty big blue eyes and long hair. I love the name kaya too. Kaya is john’s only child, as well as eva’s. He had 2 grown stepsons from his ex wife.

it’s unfortunate that their relationship ended in divorce. i used to watch All My Children when they were a couple (on and off screen) and you could really see the chemistry between the 2. but i think it’s great that they get along great for the sake of their daughter and that John was willing to relocate to be a part of his daughter’s life. Kaya is a cutie from the last pic i saw of her. dad has some strong genes, b/c she doesn’t quite look as much like Eva as i expected her to.

I’m pretty sure that Kaya is his only biologocal child.

I didn’t know they were divorced. That breaks my heart a little bit 😦

I love the way John handled this situation. He made the necessary adjustments to continue to be a presence in his child’s life. Luckily he has the means to do so. I wish more people would step up and be as proactive. Most people would relocate for a job, but it’s not everyday you hear about someone moving for their child.
