Little Pim ($18) is a clever DVD series that uses images of real kids and cute animation to teach toddlers a second language. Little Pim shows kids familiar images like “milk” and “ball” then repeats them at the end of each episode. The cute panda, Little Pim, serves as the teacher and speaks only the language being taught.
The experts who designed it learned that kids learn best this way and that children learn languages much faster and easier than adults. They offer Spanish, French, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Hebrew and English as a second language, and are planning to release more languages soon. Each DVD ($18) provides 35 minutes of themed video like “playtime” and “wake up smiling” and comes with a useful parents’ guide that helps parents reinforce the learning during regular activities.
Little Pim is the brainchild of Julia Pimsleur Levine, an award winning documentary filmmaker who, as the mother of two, wanted to create a top quality, fun language-teaching DVDs for babies and young children. Julia was inspired by her own bilingual childhood: she is the daughter of Dr. Paul Pimsleur, who pioneered the international second best-selling foreign language audio teaching method for adults.
Angelina Jolie reportedly uses Little Pim to teach Shiloh French! Oui Oui!
