I’d Like the Goo-Gen-Heim

I’d Like the Goo-Gen-Heim ($15) is a 1970 children’s book by A.G. Hollingsworth that was found at a library sale and quickly ushered into re-printing by the museum’s press. It’s the story of Andy, a little boy who, upon entering “the most beautiful building” he’s ever seen that seems to “smile at him,” becomes taken with the Kandinskys and Klines inside.

My children, who are 5 and 3 and live in Los Angeles, were captivated by the idea of a spiral building, and after reading the book raced to “Google Images” for a look at the real thing. Now they have a motivation to visit New York — and to pick up a paintbrush. Complete with vintage watercolor illustrations, the book is the first in a new product line, Guggenheim Kids.

Mom Said It

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
