I knew the mortality rate for women and babies in Third World Countries was higher than in the US, but I just never imagined HOW much higher. I can’t imagine going through a pregnancy with the question of whether or not I (or my baby) will survive, being at the forefront of my thoughts constantly, robbing me of the joy of pregnancy and the impending birth of a child. I applaud Liya for bringing awareness and education to people (like me) in other countries where we take so much for granted. It definitely wakes me up and makes me want to DO something to help out any way I can! Thanks, Liya, for educating me and, I’m sure, many more people just like me who didn’t have all of the facts and figures! No mother-to-be should have that kind of frightening burden on her shoulders, so much needs to be done!

No, this is not why anyone planning a home birth should reconsider. Not at all. This is why a sanitary birthing environment is important, this is why education is important. This is why it’s important that you don’t marry girls off by the time they turn 12 or have their first period. This is why female circumcision is so wrong.

This is about culture, respect for women and education. It’s about health care in general and regarding pregnancy and childbirth. It’s not about something as planned and as safe as a home birth in the western world. Think about it.

becka, an attended homebirth is no more dangerous than a hospital birth. I think it’s frankly rather insulting to compare women labouring alone in Ethiopia to the kind of homebirth Western women have, where they frequently have experienced midwives, gas and air on tap, clean equipment for stitches and an easy transfer to hospital should it be required. An unassisted birth is not the way most women choose to homebirth.

When I gave birth to my daughter, the midwife who delivered her at the hospital actually recommended a homebirth for my next child,

This is why anyone planning a home birth should reconsider and more respect should be given to doctors and hospitals. Giving birth is not a competition or a place for women to build self-esteem. Think about your health and the baby’s health. The baby deserves to be safe. Hospitals are not flawless, but we all know how many lives have been saved with medical help.

Next time someone says that women having been giving birth naturally since the dawn of man, I hope they remember this post and realize that natural in the US doesn’t mean the same thing as natural in many parts of the world. Women in these countries aren’t hung up on how a baby comes into the world and how much pleasure a woman gets out of giving birth. They just want to survive pregnancy and childbirth with a healthy baby. God bless Liya for drawing attention to this issue.
