Matthew Broderick On His Baby Girls: 'I'm Nervous Just Even Thinking About It'

Bruce Glikas/FilmMagic

Bring on the pink! Set to welcome twin daughters this summer with his wife Sarah Jessica Parker, actor Matthew Broderick tells David Letterman during a recent appearance on his show that he is “ready” for whatever is thrown at him. His preparation, he says, comes after much sought out advice from fellow parents of multiples. “I’ve asked people what it’s like to have twins,” he shares. “One father said, ‘I don’t recommend it,’ but the rest have been very positive.”

Despite the — mostly — positive feedback, the 47-year-old clearly becomes a bit flustered when David mentions the Matthew will soon be a dad of, not only one, but two daughters!

“I’m nervous just even thinking about it, but it’s girls … two little girls.”

Matthew isn’t the only one gearing up for the summer additions! The doting dad reveals that his savvy son James Wilkie, 6 ½, is already looking out for his soon-to-be younger sisters, telling his parents “we have to get a lot of princess toys.” While James seems to be taking the news well, when it comes to being a big brother, Matthew jokes that his little boy is beginning to second guess himself.

“He’s pretty excited. He’s just now thinking, ‘Wait a minute, am I?’”

Anyone happen to know why they went through a surrogate? May be a stupid question, I know. I would think that SJP is still capable of carrying a pregnancy to term. I’m just curious.

@ Diane
This is all hear-say, but I’ve heard that Sarah and Matthew had been trying to get pregnant for a long while. I’m guessing that actually she probably isn’t capable of carrying a baby herself. I do not know why…and like I said, this is all things that I’ve heard…

Diane, I know they have had a lot of fertility troubles over the years, even before James. So if they were having trouble getting pregnant seven years ago, it’s probably not any better now. I’m assuming they went with a surrogate because SJP can no longer carry to term.

Awww, Mathew will be a great Dad to the girls! He’s got such a calm and funny personality.

Wow, gotta say, I’m looking forward to those baby girls! I love James and always wanted to see more of SJP and Matthew’s kids. Those girls have an amazing fashion inheritance to look forward to from mom!

So many celebs are having twins these days!!

Well, if she isn’t capable of carrying a baby to term, I’m glad that they can still have children through a surrogate.

Isn’t SJP 44? I would think falling pregnant at 44 was near impossible. Egg quality is rarely viable past 40.
Anyway, best of luck to the pair of them. I have twin girls and they are beautiful. Welcome to the club!

I feel bad that every time there is a SJP post about the twins the only things people say are, “Why a surrogate?”. I don’t think it matters and until they say why we won’t know the answer for sure anyway. The only thing that matters now is that there are 2 beautiful little girls about to make their way into this world who will be met with grateful and loving parents. :)

PS Can’t wait to find out what they are naming those girls. James has a really traditional first name so maybe they’ll go that route.

we have to get a lot of princess toys –> really cute! :)

Sadie- Yes, but, from what I’ve read, SJP apparently had some embryos frozen when she went through IVF to concieve James, so they may have placed some of those embryos into the surrogate.

Did they talk about fertility issues?

I find it regrettable, too, that the first questions are always about fertility issues (although the curiosity is not hard to understand). I wonder why they announced it so early (maybe they knew it was about to come out or something). If they waited until the girls were there, I think two cute little faces would have helped to let speculations die down quicker.

Anyway, can’t wait to see the girls and what they name them. Their son is really cute:)
