Liev Schreiber Dishes on an 'Incredibly Active' Sasha

James Devaney/WireImage

During a humorous Tuesday appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, Liev Schreiber admitted that life with two sons is — at times — a bit more intense than even he envisioned. Since welcoming new baby Samuel Kai, 4 ½-months, the 41-year-old actor has been enjoying more one-on-one time with Alexander ‘Sasha’ Pete, 21-months. “He’s incredibly active,” Liev reveals. “He’s a very physical kid and he’s generally trying to do harm to himself which is something I didn’t know that children did.”

Adding that his son “wants to jump of things all the time,” Liev says that while Sasha has been “pretty good” about adjusting to his new role as a big brother, occasionally his rough-and-tumble ways are directed at Kai. Recalls Liev,

“I took him to the circus, the Ringling Bros., and I bought him one of those flashlights with the spinning globe on it. And this was one of the first signs that something was really wrong. I brought him home, and up to this point he pretty much ignored Kai, but I brought him this thing, and he walks right over to Kai and he just bonks him over the head with it.”

When asked by host David Letterman how life is with two-under-two, Liev joked “it’s great, you know, if you don’t need much sleep and enjoy being covered in milk, phlegm and baby feces all the time.”

Sasha and Kai are Liev’s children with fiancée Naomi Watts. He can currently be seen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

They call him Kai? Cute name.

No matter how much you think the older child likes their new sibling, they always manage to pull te babies hair a few times or pinch the baby!

- Mary on

Haha, Liev’s so funny! I love Sasha! Cute little man. I’d love to see a proper picture of Kai!

- babyboopie on

yikes he should have someone write what he says about his kids casue when he says it it comes off as him not liking them very much-to hear it from him fatherhood is a burden-doesn’t exactly paint the picture his actions show of him out always with his family, helping hi wife and looking loving. I guess it’s his sense of humor and perhaps reading it is different from hearing him. They are a lovely family. I am so happy for Naomi I know she has said she longed for children for a long time.

Liev quite clearly has a very dry sense of humor. I find him hysterical! I’ve never once got the impression that he “hates” fatherhood. He’s just being sarcastic!

I didn’t realise they were calling the baby Kai.

They’re calling the baby Kai? I’m pretty sure they were calling him Sammy in the beginning… Btw, Alexander is such an amazing name, so I can’t grasp why they’re calling him Sasha, with Schreiber as his last name. It’s quite a mouthful! But he’s is soooo darn cute, I wonder if his baby brother looks like him! Can’t tell if he favors his mom or dad though, but I’m kinda leaning towards Naomi I think.. I guess time will tell!

I was going to say a similar thing Natalie, I recall her saying it was Sammy for now, last few posts seems to have changed to Kai as time’s gone on. As the mum of a son called Sam I like either! but don’t understand naming him one thing and then going by his middle name but obviously they liked both as options (i recall reading a while back about indecision on his first and second names order) and maybe Kai just suited him or ‘clicked’?…I agree about it being a mouthful with the two ‘s’s for Sacha’s names. Prefer Alex or Alexander myself but it obviously had meaning for them to name him Sacha, Liev’s background etc…? Bet he’s a cutie like his big brother!

Liev is TOTALLY being sarcastic and funny when he says stuff like that. I don’t know him personally but I don’t doubt that he’s totally in love with his boys!

I didn’t know it until someone here explained it, but Sasha is the dimunitive form of Alexander. The nickname Sasha to Alexander may not have a ton of meaning in North America, but it does in other parts of the world. I think it’s really cute, actually – it’s a really sweet nickname, and very unisex, in my opinion.

I love this family! I agree with others that Liev seems to just have a very dry sense of humor and is blunt in the way he puts things, but there are so many pictures of him with Sasha just being so affectionate, I’ve always gotten the impression that he loves being a dad.

alice jane- Exactly, and Liev is Ukranien, so it’s a nod to his heritage! :)

Ah, looks like Alexander is at the “look, I can fly” phase if he’s jumping off things now. Of course if you give a kid flashlights with the spinning globe on it the kid is going to go running around hitting everything and everyone, including the baby, with it. So funny. Maybe one of these days we will read a more positive story from Liev gushing about how much he loves his kids and how they make him laugh and the joy he gets being with Naomi and the kids together. ;)

I don’t see anything negative about this story. It’s cute and it shows they are like every other family out there. Everyone that has a brother or sister has been hit in the head by them at one time in their life!

I like Liev’s humour and think there is nothing “yikes” about what he is saying.

- Anna on

In most European countries persons called Alexander ( Aleksandar in my country) have nickname Sasha and Alex is less used here

- MarijaP on

Remember Naomi couldn’t decide the order of the two names? Maybe she wanted Samuel “Sammy” to be his forename and Liev wanted Kai to be it. So they each call him by the name they like.

I know that this guys loves his boys. He wouldn’t have been worried about the action figure in the turtle bag if he didn’t. I think that he is definately being not only sarcastic but very candid in the interview at least he doesn’t whine like a lot of new dads that are years younger than him. I definately think he is a great example of a good dad.

- Nic83 on

I love his sense of humor! It’s so dry and witty. I’ve also seen the pictures of him and his absolutely gorgeous family, and I can never stop smiling. They are beautiful! I love Liev. :D
