Matthew McConaughey on the Bond Between Father and Son

INF

The tides of favoritism have turned in the Alves-McConaughey house! During a Wednesday stop at Good Morning America, Matthew McConaughey revealed that he and son Levi Alves, 9 ½  months, have developed their own bond separate and distinct from that of baby boy’s bond with Matthew’s partner Camila Aves. “What I learned is that for the first seven months, the child really doesn’t care too much about the dad,” Matthew explained. “They really want mom; They want to eat, and that’s where they get the food.”

“But this last two-and-a-half months, he’s really started to take a liking to myself. He and I have our own jokes that he and his mother don’t have.”

Life hasn’t changed all that much for Matthew since becoming a father. Instead, he says, his newly-formed ”tribe” has only served to enhance his adventures. ”I’m doing everything that I was doing before, [but] with my lady and with my son, [it] has really just become a ball.” Now he has “more to live for,” Matthew says, “and that feels good.”

When asked by an audience member what words of wisdom he has for first-time expectant parents, Matthew points out that their heads are probably swimming with advice already. “Even if you don’t ask for it, people are giving you advice,” he noted. “You’ll find some good things, some things you can use, but overall what I’ve noticed is that your instincts do take over.” Quoting his own mother Kay McConaughey, Matthew adds that “if you just love the kid, you really can’t screw up.”

“There will be quite a few of those nights where you’re wanting to pick up the phone to call somebody and go ‘What the heck do I do?’ [But] it’s never a big of a deal as you thought it was, especially with your first child.”

The 39-year-old Ghosts of Girlfriends Past star advises, “Just enjoy the adventure of it…that’s whats been happening with us, and it seems to be working well.”
