Liev Schreiber Seeks No Sympathy From Naomi Watts

Brian Flannery/Flynet

A movie set can be a dangerous place! Despite racking up his fair share of cuts, bumps, and bruises while filming X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Liev Schreiber got little sympathy — but quite a few laughs! — from Naomi Watts when he would return home each night. The truth of the matter was that, with a new baby, there were much more pressing matters at hand! “Are you kidding?” Liev laughs to PARADE when asked how his fiancée would comfort him.

“We had just had a baby, so there’s Naomi with my son Sasha waiting to have dinner and be changed and put to bed. And I’m walking around like the Michelin Man with the ice packs on. But I did my daddy thing.”

Life with 21-month-old Sasha and 4-month-old Samuel Kai has been quite the learning experience for the couple. Having just overcome a great sleeping hurdle with Sasha — who is successfully snoozing through the night — the 41-year-old actor admits the night-time routine is still far from a smooth sail. “Kai hasn’t gotten there yet. On his bad nights, he wakes up his big brother and it gets a little complicated,” Liev explains.

Still, the challenge of sleep seems trivial to Liev’s “neurosis” that comes along with an acting career. Constantly contemplating a future that could one day leave him looking for a day job, the father of two is all too aware of the responsibilities that come with having a family. “I’ve got kids and it’s not cheap to raise them,” he notes.

“They could sap me dry and I could be delivering pizzas next week. You never know.”

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is in theaters today.

I really like this family

I am not surprised by his last comment. I’d be suprised if he wasn’t worried about money, He was poor and homeless for a while when he was growing up so I’m sure that had something to do with it.

I was actually surprised to hear Liev call Sammy “Kai”. I remember that Naomi said that they wondered if Sammy was too immature of a name. Maybe they decided that they were going to switch it to Kai.

- Brooke on

kai sounds much better than sammy. i always wondered ‘why give kid a name if you don’t call him that’, so it still baffles me when alexander is called with that ‘sasha’ thing

- nimbusi on

Sasha IS Alexander in Russian. Same thing.

- indigo on

It’s ok not to know that Sasha is an informal version of Alexander in Russian. But it’s not ok to be mean about it. That Sasha thing is the name Naomi & Liev chose for their son. End of story.

I really don’t see anyone being mean. Just stating their opinions.

1) I love seeing Liev and Sasha together- it is like two buddies hanging out and soooo cute.
2) I only wish Octomom would read the “kids aren’t cheap to raise” comment ;)
3) Sasha is Russian for Alexander and is a nickname like Bill=William, Mike=Michael, Dick=Richard. I love nicknames they are endearing and sweet and I think Sasha (the name and the baby) are adorable :)

indigo – it’s not the same name. i lived in russia for a while and sasha is not the same name, it’s different name. my friend is named alexander and his parents call him sasha only when they get angry with him. it’t like in america i heard people call their children full names (like jack daniel edward smith), in europe people tend to shorten names they call their children when they want to say something. if you name kid daniel for example, that means you want to call him that name. if you want to call him danny, you name him danny.
martina – it’s o.k. not to know that boy is named alexander, so it’s the name his parents has chosen :)

Straight from Wikipedia:
Sasha is a male and female given name. It originated in Russian, Eastern and Central Europe as a diminutive version of the names Alexander and Alexandra. It is also found as a surname, although this is very rare. Alternative spellings include: Saša (Serbian, Croatian, Czech, Slovak), Sascha (German) and Sasja (Dutch).

nimbusi- While I understand what you are trying to say, I must disagree. Nicknames are just that… diminutive forms of a name and there is absolutely nothing wrong with going by one. My name is Catherine Caroline and I have gone by Cece since the day I was born. Just because a child is given a name doesn’t mean they have to go by that. My son is a “third.” His name is John Robert III, he goes by Tripp, my husband, who obviously has the same name, goes by Jack. We are a nickname filled family, but all have perfectly acceptable formal names.

- Cece on

We’re not a nickname family, but my in-laws are. The reasoning they have is that as the child grows up, s/he has a choice of names. Nicknames are fun, but maybe the child will grow up and want/need a more professional name. If you name the child only what you intend to call him, well, that’s how you get Peanut… :-p

“They could sap me dry and I could be delivering pizzas next week. You never know.”

He is so right! I’m sure he and Naomi are squirreling away money. They still have a very good life there in NYC, but you never know! Something could happen to either of them and they wouldn’t be able to find work again in the industry.

I wonder why he calls Samuel Kai instead of Sam or Samuel. Even Sammy would work.

Nimbusi, I am Russian. Sasha is a nickname for Alexander or Alexandra. There is no way you can name your child Sasha as a formal name. No one will register it as a real name.

Lievomi is my favorite celebrity couple ever. They just seem so normal and down-to-earth. And Sasha is the cutest kid in Hollywood right now!. So doggone adorable:)
