Debra Messing Says Roman Gives Her Perspective

Landov

The glitz and glamour of life as a successful actress will never go to Debra Messing‘s head. Speaking to OK! from the Chanel Dinner for the Tribeca Film Festival on Thursday night, the 40-year-old The Starter Wife star said that son Roman Walker, 5, keeps her real. “When I’m on the floor with my son — Look at my knees, do you see? Majorly skinned knees,” she points out. “That’s from my son’s birthday party on Saturday at the gym and I was crawling on the floor.”

“Skinned knees and chasing after a little boy keeps everything in perspective.”

When she’s not crawling around on all fours, Debra says that her favorite activity with Roman is reading together. The family — which includes Debra’s husband of eight years, Daniel Zelman — have “an embarrassingly big library,” she admits, and Roman often reaps the benefits.

“I’m a book fanatic so he gets to go and pick out whatever he wants and his choice changes all the time.”

Elisabeth Röhm Rocks Out With Easton

John Shearer/WireImage

If there is a recurring theme for Elisabeth Röhm and her 1-year-old daughter Easton August Anthony, it is definitely music! The 35-year-old former Law & Order star says that the bond began early, while Easton was still in utero, and Elisabeth would sing along – loudly! — while driving her car. “I asked my doctor … if it would hurt Easton, because I really didn’t want to disturb her,” she tells US. “He said, ‘I guess it’s okay’…I don’t think he’d ever been asked that question before.”

“That set the tone of Easton and I, and music in our family.”

The good times have only continued since baby girl arrived. ”If Easton could talk, I think she would say she probably likes dancing with me [the best],” Elisabeth reveals. “She kind of holds on to her crib and rocks out with me as I entertain her.” Her preference is definitely for rock and roll. “She likes music she can move to,” Elisabeth reveals. “I wasn’t somebody that played classical music all the time I was pregnant…I did what my doctor said to do; I was just happy. I really focused on just being happy, a lot.”

“I was one of those people that really wanted to have children. I can’t describe the feeling of when you see them when you come home. That encapsulates my experience of being a mom.”

Singling out the ability to trust herself as the best piece of parenting advice she received, Elisabeth offers up thanks to her own mother for being on hand after Easton was born. “It gave me tremendous confidence,” she explains. “I realized she had done a really great job.” As Easton recently celebrated her first birthday, Elisabeth says she’s careful not to dwell on each milestone reached and instead focuses on being “really in the moment with her.”

“I think you can spend so much time saying ‘I can’t wait until they walk, I can’t wait until they talk, I can’t wait until they do this,’ that you are not really with them right there. A child is a gift. All my friends – whether they have kids are not – are coming over more and more, just to spend time with her. She’s like all children…magical.”

Easton is Elisabeth’s daughter with Ron Wooster.

Roger Federer: 'No Clue' What to Name Son

Jon Furniss/WireImage

Now happily ensconced in wedded bliss, tennis ace Roger Federer and his new bride Mirka can attend to the business at hand — choosing a name for their baby-on-the-way — which is a boy, Roger reveals! Speaking at a press conference in Monte Carlo, Roger admitted that it’s a daunting task. “You know, we’ll see,” he mused. “There’s quite a few books around that are that thick, so we’ll see where it takes us.”

“But, no, we haven’t decided anything yet. I have no clue right now myself. Thank God we have time left to decide.”

Speaking of their wedding day, while it was quickly assembled it wasn’t exactly unplanned, either. “We’ve been talking about it for many years now,” the 27-year-old former World No. 1 reveals. “Basically 95% of the people we invited could come, so they changed their schedules around for us.”

“Everything really worked out really well for us, otherwise we would have waited and done it maybe one month down the road, or maybe one year down the road. But everything worked out for this last weekend.”

Roger and Mirka’s son — the first child for both — is due this summer.

Brooke Shields Shelters Her Daughters From the Spotlight

Hector Vallenilla/Pacific Coast News

Brooke Shields is no stranger to child acting: she starred in her first commercial for Ivory soap when she was only 11-months-old. However, despite her own experiences, a childhood spent in the spotlight is not one she envisions for her own daughters, she tells Time Out Kids. “Times are different. I wouldn’t let my children join the industry until they’ve graduated from college,” she shares. “They need a degree, and then at that point I’ll help them do whatever they want.”

While their mother may be sheltering them from the lense, Brooke admits that Rowan Francis, 5 ½, and Grier Hammond, 3, are already natural-born entertainers. “Like all little girls, there is a theatrical element to them,” she notes. That said, any tell-tale signs for a future in show biz ends there!

“They love singing and dancing and all of that, but I don’t think they have that hankering [to be in the business]. They know I work so hard, and they wouldn’t have the patience!”

Fortunately for the girls, a day with mom away at work – or enjoying time with her gal pals – means making fun-filled daddy-daughter memories with their father Chris Henchy. “He knows how hard it is for us mothers,” Brooke reveals. “He’s always like, ‘I’ll take them! You sleep in,’ or ‘You go and do something with your girlfriends.’ He’s not afraid of one-on-one time with them.”

The normalcy of the foursome intrigued publishing company Harper Collins, leading them to prompt Brooke to write a children’s book. With her first book — Welcome to Your World, Baby — a success, the 43-year-old was happy to pen a second children’s story. Her inspiration for It’s the Best Day Ever, Dad!? None other than her own family.

“Oh it practically is our family! [My girls] do all of that with [their dad]. It became a sweet way for me to pay tribute to [my daughters] without exploiting them.”

Diana Krall Makes Marriage a Priority

George Pimentel/WireImage

For many couples the death of romance after the birth of a baby comes as a surprise, but Diana Krall is determined not to let it happen with husband Elvis Costello. Noting that “it’s so easy to just get immersed in motherhood,” Diana — mom of twins Dexter Henry Lorcan and Frank Harlan James — acknowledges that it’s every bit as easy to “neglect your marriage.” That’s why the couple “really make time with each other, and nobody else,” she tells the May issue of Chatelaine magazine.

“When we get home, since the boys are going to sleep later, we see them off to bed and we watch a movie. And there’s your day.”

Diana says that while women can try to ”do it all,” it’s often unnecessary, and asking for help is key. “Sometimes I have dinner parties and sometimes I cook the whole dinner and that’s great,” she reveals. “There are other times where, because I’m privileged to be able to ask for help, I have more time and more energy to give to my children.” The 44-year-old songstress considers fatigue the “biggest challenge” of parenthood. ”You’re constantly tired and you’re constantly trying to keep up with things that seem simple…Your coping mechanism starts short-circuiting,” she feels.  Her advice is simple — sleep!

“Sometimes I don’t get off stage until one in the morning and then my kids are up at seven. I have to get up! Somehow, you have to find a way to balance that.”

The boys, now 2, are gearing up to hit the road with mom again, as she tours the globe in support of her new album Quiet Nights. Things will be much different than they were the last time around, however. “Now the boys are walking and going every which way,” she says. “They’re so interactive now.” Bunk beds will be installed for the twins, and Diana will sleep nearby “so they can crawl into bed with me,” she says. Hotel life is another inescapable reality of life on the road. ”We really spend most of our lives in one-bedroom apartments with room service,” Diana notes. “And we have to find things to do, to live in a new city and try to find a park and a playground and activities for the boys.”

“It’s challenging. That’s where you have to really rely on your own resources and in my case, the help of really wonderful nannies. Nothing is really consistent!”

Quiet Nights is available now.

Holly Robinson Peete Laments New Move

Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage

The last few weeks have been busy for Holly Robinson Peete and family! In a blog for MomLogic, the 44-year-old actress writes that she, husband Rodney Peete and the couple’s four children recently spent spring break in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. “The beach was gorgeous, the water crystal blue, and kids fished, played on the sand, jet skied and mommy returned tanned and relaxed,” Holly shares. All good things must come to an end, however, and soon it was time to work! Twins Ryan and Rodney, Jr., 11 ½, Robinson, 6 ½ and Roman, 4 – together with their mom! — shot the family’s “annual” commercial for Colgate, and then it was on to New York City to do promotion for My Brother Charlie, a book Ryan wrote about having a twin with autism.

Somehow in the midst of it all, the family moved from its home of 12 years. “Anyone with small children knows this is never easy,” Holly writes. While the kids were “excited by the prospect of new surroundings,” they developed cold feet when the big day arrived.

“We had the same breakdowns many of you have probably experienced: Will I have to change schools? If I do, will I make new friends? Will my old friends still be my friends? What about my bedroom, will it be the same or different? But I don’t want to sell that at the garage sale, can’t I keep everything? What about Harriet (the dog)?”

In closing, Holly wonders where her spring break has gone. “Take a moment for yourself … before you have to think about summer vacation,” she suggests.

My Brother Charlie is slated for publication next spring to coincide with Autism Awareness Month.
