Kimora Lee Simmons Leaning Towards 'Blue Team' at Baby Shower

04/30/2009 at 02:00 PM ET

Better late than never! Kimora Lee Simmons celebrated her upcoming arrival with a “last minute, low key” baby shower April 19th, less than two months before she’s due to deliver her third child. “I’m about to have a baby,” the 33-year-old guest of honor exclaimed. Clad in blue, Kimora said that although she’s not 100% certain about the baby’s sex, she and partner Djimon Hounsou are “leaning heavily towards the blue team!” Already mom to Ming Lee, 9, and Aoki Lee, 6 ½, Kimora says her bump is decidedly different this time around.

“With the girls I was wider in the belly. Now I’m narrower, but if I turn sideways I can’t fit through the door!”

Guests — including Holly Robinson Peete and Stevie Wonder – dined on delicacies like shrimp caviar and poached salmon, along with comfort foods like macaroni and cheese and a fondue fountain with chocolate, fruit and marshmallows, all from the Beverly Hills Hotel. Kimora’s influence was evident throughout the menu. “I was very involved with the food because I’m a greedy pregnant girl,” she explains. “I’ve been eating a lot of spicy food. I put jalapeños in everything!”

Also on hand was dad-to-be, who is anxiously anticipating the arrival of his first child. “Djimon is a spiritual person, and it’s a big deal for him to have a baby,” Kimora says. “When he first saw the heartbeat at the ultrasound, he said he felt very humbled.” Ming and Aoki — who “don’t quite get the birds and the bees,” and instead think that they are responsible for what’s growing in mommy’s belly — are looking forward to becoming big sisters, as well.

“The girls love being princesses. They love fashion and being girly. The girls say, ‘We’re going to dress the baby up!’ Djimon’s like, ‘No, you’re not going to be pinning tulle to the boy!'”

Ming and Aoki are Kimora’s children with ex-husband Russell Simmons.

I have to say when I heard these two were dating I thought it was an odd couple- he seems like a very serious actor and she is a bit materialistic (though I do love her). But they make it work and I LOVE the way he is looking at her in this pic!! CONGRATS :)

Lorelei on

I love the way he is looking at her. The girls are beautiful. I respect the way that she works so hard and even though her children are privileged they still are expected to behave a certain way.

Chris on

I love the way Djimon is looking at Kimora in the photo.

RibbonInTheSky on

Awww…Djimon looks like he is so in love. And the girls always seem so comfortable with him. The last comment is Hilarious! Beautiful family. Can’t wait to see the little baby.

Diane on

She knows what she’s having, why would you have a blue themed baby shower just on a hunch over how your stomach is shaped?

Scherriea on

Aoki and Ming are soo cute..Aoki looks like Russell and Ming looks like Kimora..I am so happy for them both..wish them all the best with their baby!

Marilyn on

I’m a little confused about whether they really know the sex of the baby or not. Everything is blue at the shower and he says they are “not going to be pinning tulle on the boy”, yet they also say they don’t know the sex of the baby. Maybe he meant IF it’s a boy, but why are they all dressed in blue if they don’t know. Anyway, I wish them well. They all look so nice.

Liz on

I think they are having a boy. They said they are not sure because ultrasounds are not 100% right you know?so even if they told them it was a boy it could be a girl at the end.I guess we would have to wait till the birth(LOL).

Natalie on

Who are they kidding saying that they don’t know the sex of the baby? Um..Hello??? Why is everything blue? & why do they call him “the boy” I’m sorry but they just blew their own cover. Congrats to them!!!

Aniah on

They know it’s a boy! There were photos of Kimora carrying balloons saying “It’s a boy.”

candykane on

In this picture she doesn’t even look pregnant. Looks just like a nice family pic maybe form a picnic but not a baby shower. Can’t wait to see the little one

mmh on

I love that it’s a “big deal” for him to have a baby. Sure would be nice if everyone felt that way!!!!

lol@mmh
my thoughts exactly! that comment was a little odd.

love him.

“Ming and Aoki — who “don’t quite get the birds and the bees,” and instead think that they are responsible for what’s growing in mommy’s belly”

I’m surprised the 9 year old thinks that. I don’t think that’s doing the kids any favor if they get to 9 and don’t have a basic understanding of where babies come from.

MZ on

I agree the blue themed shower is a little odd if they don’t know the sex, but maybe they just like the color blue. We didn’t know the gender of our baby ahead of time, but when my girlfriends were throwing me a shower and talking about themes, they asked if I wanted a color theme. (It ended up being Dr. Seuss themed).

I think 9 is a good age to start talking about “the birds and the bees.” I was 8 when my parents explained it to me, but apparently that was a little early for my peers and most didn’t know. It seems like most schools begin to teach it in 4th grade, so 9 years would be about right…maybe they are waiting for the schools to teach it? Although anymore, kids are becoming sexually active at that age… :-/

Okay, I’m a bit confused. They threw their OWN baby shower? Can we say Tacky-capital-T?? I think that is a bigger concern than whether or not it’s a boy! I hope someone gave them a copy of The Rules of Etiquette!

Amanda on

What a beautiful family!

anna on

congrats and it is not tacky to throw your own shower and they make a really nice family.

melania on

What a gorgeous picture! I love the girls’ sandals. So cute. Kimora is probably a mircomanager, type A like me and can’t just sit back and chill. She just had to give her input on the menu. But I doubt they threw the shower themselves.

L on

He’s looking at her like “I really love this women” so cute!!

I cant wait to see their baby, I wonder if they will go with a more Korean name like Ming & Aoki or more African like Djimon…!?

stedine on

Michelle

If they want to throw a party THEMSELVES and not ask anyone to bring gifts, it is their prerogative. There are different types of baby showers, some are just family and friend get togethers for baby arrival and not your typical baby registry party. I hope you open that book of etiquette to the page about minding your own business

FC on

Hello, blue and color coordination! They all match and complement each other right down to their shoes/sandals! But it’s cute, and those girls are getting to be such young ladies, I can’t stand it. I still think of them as little, little girls. :)

Cute photo, too. Can’t wait to see this baby.

HeatherR on

They obviously know that the baby is a boy.

jossy on

I think is ok which ever sex the baby will be.
I am happy for Djimon and Kimora. Please call the baby an Africa
name, I’m from there.

lala2 on

Stedine…….

YOU SAID IT PERFECTLY!!!!!!! GO GIRL!!!!!! HA!

Ryan on

It’s funny how they are saying they aren’t 100% sure that it’s a boy. My friend had her ultrasound to find out the sex and they told her it was a boy but the baby turned out to be a girl! I wonder if that’s the case for them…if they are just saying they THINK it’s a boy because the ultrasound wasn’t clear??

Lorus on

A friend of mine was pregnant with what they thought was a girl. Bought girl clothing, had a girl’s name only. Well I had a feeling it was going to be a boy and when I caught the little one on it’s way out…”It’s a boy!”.

anna on

she didnt throw the shower in ok magazine she said her friend threw the shower for her

Jess from Ohio on

I don’t find it tacky to have a baby shower. I mean, for one, it is Djimon’s first child. And I think every new child deserves a celebration of their entrance into the world. That’s just my opinion, but even if presents aren’t involved I think it’s just fun to have all of the friends and family gather around and celebrate the new life that will begin shortly!

Lioness on

They know. Kimora is just playing with everyone, like she always does. They definitely know, and it’s a boy. Beautiful family, I always like seeing them.

CelebBabyLover on

Ryan- I agree! It’s very possible that they are just being cautious, since doctors always say that ultrasounds can’t tell the gender with 100 percent accuracy. In otherwords, the ultrasound probably indicated that it’s a boy, but they are saying they’re not 100 percent sure just in case of the 10 percent chance that it turns out to be a girl.

Godiva on

Say what you want about Kimora but I think she should be a model for how ADULTS deal with divorce — it never got ugly with Russell and her. Also, I love the relationship btw Djimon and her children. I wish more celebrities mirrored her drama-less actions.

Lissette on

I forgot that she’s due soon! She should just come out and say it’s a boy cause it’s obvious. Hello! haha. Cant wait to see what the baby looks like and what name they give him!

Monique7 on

Her girls are so gorgeous. They all look so great together. Since they seem to want a little boy, I really hope she gets him. Best of luck!

dawn on

I have to agree too txgal. he really doesn’t seem like her type. they are beautiful togehter though. congrats!

Tina on

ohh i luve it stedine:)

Ana on

i would guess they know its a boy due to all the BLUE! unless they just really trust their instincts!

Lola on

I think that if Kimora is “playing with everybody,” it’s not because they don’t know, but maybe because it’s a girl! I kind of doubt it, though. Congrats to them!!

CelebBabyLover on

Lola has a point. Remember how Kate Hudson had a pink-themed baby shower when she was pregnant with Ryder (although she later claimed she didn’t find out his sex before birth, so maybe she just likes pink)?

Also, it could be that they are just being cautious in case the ultrasound turns out to be wrong. Perhaps that happened with one of the girls (the ultrasound said baby was a boy, but it turned out to be a girl).

Diane on

Everybody is entitled to their own opinions..Mine is you are putting way too much effort into figuring out the sex of this child and why Kimora decided on a blue shower, etc……Let’s just all be pleasantly surprised and just compliment this wonderful growing family. This is one classy lady and they are lucky to have found one another to celebrate this wonderful occassion together…
