CBB Poll: What Do You Refuse to Buy Generic?

Celebrity Baby Blog

As the nation looks to tighten its belt, we’ve noticed more people buying generics or store-brands for the things they buy most often as a way to save money. Often, generics can be as good as brand name items but some people just prefer the security of buying a brand they trust. Are there specific products for your children that you won’t buy generic or store-brand?

All of the above!

In such hard times, I do buy more generic than usually. The only thing I dont really feel comfortable buying my formula. Other than that generics are not really much different than the name brand stuff; other than the price of course.

You need a choice for will buy anything generic! I buy all of those things store brand…

everything except clothing

I buy/bought all of the above generic! We used the Walmart brand formula and diapers for both of my daughters. Unless I find an item that I can’t the quality I want in generic, that is all I buy.

I only by generic for myself and my husband. I know it’s weird but I feel terribly guilty cutting corners when it comes to baby. When it comes to saving money my husband and I are on lock-down and we cut corners wherever we possibly can!

I had no problem buying generic of anything. We never used formula, so we didn’t have to decide whether to go that route or not.

We use the generic brand for diapers, formula, and wipes. They are exactly the same as the name brand but a lot cheaper.

I would buy anything generic (at least once-I did get some not so nice chickpeas one time). It would have been nice to have that option so I could have seen the results of the poll.

I would try just about anything generic, but I don’t always like it. Sometimes, I actually prefer the generic version.

Generic formula is the same as name brand formula. It’s all regulated and one is as safe as the others. You are paying for the advertising, “free samples” and the name when you buy the name brand.

I buy everything generic. I learned a long time ago that the money I have is what I have and a good way to have more is to save. So we buy generic things and save the difference. The Duggers do the same thing. That is also how we pay cash for everything and the only debt we have is 53k left on our house..;)

I buy nearly everything generic, mostly because our local store’s generic food often tastes better than the name brand. However, when we had to switch to formula with our third (because of long term latch issues) I refused to buy generic. Seems kind of silly now but at the time it made sense.

You needed a blank for “buy everything generic.” :)

I agree with you, Courtney, except (I’m a college student and do not have children) I do take advantage of sales on period related items. Generics are probably the best way to avoid spending tons of money especially during these times.

I’ll buy most anything generic as long as it’s still good. Diapers are the only thing I didn’t like the generic for. However I prefer the Wal-mart brand pullups to Huggies/Pampers Pullups. The huggies easy open sides and TOO easy to open, I hate that and the sides on the pampers easy ups are too thin so they tear really easily.

I never cut corners with diapers. I did try the cheaper generic kind and they just didn’t work.

I buy everything generic, except certain medications. Which I only buy the name brand if I have never given it to the kids before. Other than that, I buy store brand. Clothes, formula, diapers, all of it, if I can get it cheaper that way, I do it. As someone above pointed out, the formula is required to meet the same FDA standards as the name brands, and I personally prefer Walmart’s Parents Choice diapers or Target ones. They have worked out better for us than Pampers, Huggies or any of the rest ever did!

Walmart’s formula is SOOOO much better than Similac. It doesn’t foam up on you. You should really try it.

- ljc on

All the generic brands are just as good as the name brand. You are paying for the name not the product inside. In fact, some stores likes Wal-Mart buy the name brand’s surplus and repackage it.
