Brooke Shields Says Pregnancy Puts a Positive Spin on Body Image

INF

At 43-years-old, life for Brooke Shields has come full circle. After a childhood spent in the spotlight as an actress in films such as Pretty Baby and The Blue Lagoon, Brooke developed a “complete detachment” from her body image as a teenager, admitting in a new interview with More that her innocence towards puberty did not compliment her blossoming body, immortalized in ads for Calvin Klein.

When the actress discovered she was expecting her daughter Rowan Francis in 2002, her feelings toward her body quickly changed as she approached the pregnancy in awe. “It seemed important to me all of a sudden,” she says.

“It was life and my body had this purpose so far beyond just being there to look at, or tan or shave. Suddenly I realized how good it had been to me over the years, and what it had sustained. And I was in my thirties at the time.”

Raised in a single-parent household — her parents were divorced when Brooke was a baby — the actress always dreamt big when it came to one day starting a family of her own. Fortunately, her wishes came true! “I wanted a two-parent household and all of that, and I basically got it, I’m in a healthy relationship; I have two extraordinary kids,” she gushes. “I’ve spent a good portion of my life with the goal being ‘husband, family — if I get that, then I’m normal and healthy and I won’t become a Hollywood casualty.’”

With the ability to “check that off my really big list,” Brooke shares that she is looking forward to nurturing her career, as she balances her work with motherhood. “I want to keep working and growing,” she says.

In addition to Rowan, 5 ½, Brooke and her husband Chris Henchy are also parents to Grier Hammond, 3.

I think she’s so right though. Having a baby does certainly change how you view your body. It can be especially hard with media focus on “she had a baby yesterday, and she’s now back to her pre-baby weight with rock hard abs” lol. I had a baby 4 months ago, still battling the weight I put on, and yes, there are stretchmarks. I felt so gross about it at first, until my hubby looked at me and knocked some sense in..he said “you should be proud of your body, it nursed our daughter for 9 months!!” So true..and now I am!!
