Tony Dovolani Keeps In Touch With Kids Via Video

Although he’s making a strong bid for the mirror-ball trophy with his season-eight partner Melissa Rycroft, veteran Dancing With the Stars pro Tony Dovolani says the prize he’s most focused on is his family.

“I find myself crying at a commercial if it’s got kids in it,” says Tony, whose wife Lina, daughter Luana, 3 ½, and fraternal twins Adrian Driton and Ariana live in Connecticut while he films DWTS in California. “I’ll watch a movie that has to do with children and I find myself tearing up. I’m a family guy and every season I’ve had my whole family out here and this is the first time where the entire season I don’t have my family out here.”

With children too young to travel often, Lina keeps Tony up-to-date on the twins by sending him videos so he can watch them grow. “She’s my hero,” he gushes to PEOPLE.

As for the twins, they are now seven months old, a whopping 28 inches in length, and they sleep through the night for “12 to 13 hours” as they also develop personalities of their own, Tony says. “My boy, we keep calling him a boxer because he’s got these big hands and he just makes fists,” Tony explains. “He’s very active. The girl takes completely after Lina, the way she looks and the attitude she has.”

Tony says Lina and Luana do try to visit every three weeks “so I can get that loneliness out of my system.” During those visits, Luana will tell her dad how she’s helping Mom take care of the babies while he’s dancing. “She does not have ounce of jealousy in her [about the twins],” he adds.

Luana “is very attentive, especially when they cry or need something,” Tony says. “She handles things as if she’s the mom. When they notice her, they smile right away. It’s amazing to see at such a young age that they are developing the brother-sister thing. She is a little helper to Lina, too. She brings her the diapers, the wet-naps, when she needs them. When you see a three-and-a-half-year-old doing things like that, then we adults, we have no excuse whatsoever.”

Although he readily helps out as much as he can while he is at home, Tony refers to an old adage to describe his family. “You know they say behind every great man there is a greater woman?” he asks. “In my case that is completely true, because my wife makes me who I am today. The way she handles the home front, that’s the only way I can be out here to do what I do. If I didn’t have her I don’t know that I could have done what I’ve done so far.”

The kids are ADORABLE! Luana looks alot like Tony but with Lina’s skin tone. They’re such a beautiful family.

I love Tony on DWTS. I don’t like dance competitions, but I tune in once in a while just to see him. He is awesome.

- umma on

I love him on DWTS, he seems really down to earth. His kids are way too cute, they look alot like him!

Umma, i dont think its that uncommon for kids to sleep that long that young. My son started sleeping 12 hours plus at a month and a half!! Maybe i was just lucky lol.

All of their babies are so gorgeous!

- Stephany on

My son is 6 months, and he sleeps 12 hrs at night as well. I don’t think that’s unusual.

they are adorable! they look like cabbage patch dolls..in a good way :D

- alyson on

Is it just me or do him and his wife look exactly alike? I have always thought that. Seriously….cover up their hair and just look at thier faces and, to me at least, they look like twins. Their babies are so cute and growing sooo quick!

- Becky on

All babies are different; I slept through the night at 3 weeks, my brother at 3 YEARS.

- P on

P- I agree! According to my mom, my brother was several months old before he started sleeping through the night…whereas I started sleeping through the night practically the minute I came home from the hospital (well, other than possibly waking up to nurse at first!)!

I don’t think sleeping 12-13 hours overnight is that unusual either, a relief and fortunate maybe, but not unheard of by 6mths or so and on solids etc? Sympathise with people though who’s babies don’t settle well. Know that feeling with our youngest, earlier on anyhow. Our daughter was a nightmare with sleep with colic and reflux so we didn’t get a lot of sleep for the first 3 mths, poor her, and stressful and exhausting for everyone of course, but not her fault. Thankfully she came right with medication, started to improve from 3 mths & moved into her own room in cot from 4 mths & started sleeping 6pm to 6am from around 4-5mths, much to our relief! She also has a favourite blanket and glowing lullaby toy that helps each night with comforting her once she’s had her songs and cuddles from us and her big brother Sam. A routine helps a lot, you and baby know what to expect, when due for next sleep etc, and we’ve found the early bedtime works for us pesonally. She’s now 15 mths and still similar sleep routine, goes to bed around 6.30pm through til 7am, which helps. Must be a relief though for them having their boy and girl sleep so well as would be busier with the 3 under 4 years! the twins are cuties, the daughter looks more like the dad, but twins have beautiful eyes.

The kids are absolutely adorable! I agree…it really differs from baby to baby with the whole sleep thing. Some of my friends kids didn’t start sleeping through the night until they were around 3 years old, but my son started sleeping 9 -10 hours straight at 5 weeks old. I remember I had expected months of sleepless nights, then I woke up one morning with the sun hitting my face and then my heart started pounding and I was like “the baby!! he didn’t wake up to eat!!” I jumped out of bed and was shaking as I peaked into his cradle, so afraid something was wrong. He turned his little head and put his tiny fist to his mouth and I almost started crying with relief. Then I started laughing and thought to myself, boy have I lucked out if he’s already going to sleep through the night.

such a cute family. It would be really hard to be away from your kids when they are that young. I wonder why his wife and kids don’t just move to LA, it’s not like the kids go to school yet.

- yellowstar on

“Lina and Luana do try to visit every three weeks…”

Lina leaves her babies every three weeks?? They seem awfully young to be away from their mom like that. Why is it that if someone leaves their firstborn child for a weekend, people act like it’s a horrible thing, but if someone leaves their 2nd and 3rd born children, it’s fine?

- Anna on

Their kids are so adorable! And those big blue eyes are just gorgeous! :-)

- Jennifer on

the twins look just like their big sister… and who could be jealous when you have one baby for mom and one for herself?? lol.

I love how they did Luana’s name with an L like her moms, and gave the twins a different first letter, but put them as a pair, so that they wouldn’t be the odd babies out or anything, but Luana could keep that special connection with her mom that she has simply by having the same first letter. Little kids will take anything as a sign they are special, so it’s just something that she can play up….

with my middle son, we totally play up the fact he’s named for his daddy… and that he got that name because his brother looks like me and he looks just like his dad… and my older one gets the boost of being the oldest and getting to do things first… and our daughter gets the boost of being the youngest and the only girl… so like I said, anything you can throw out there can work…

- Kat on

yellowstar- Maybe they don’t want to raise their kids in LA.

Anna- It doesn’t say anything about how long the visits are. They may just come for a day or two, while the babies are likely having fun with their grandparents or an aunt or uncle.

- CelebBabyLover on

Ahhh, those kids are so cute!! I love Tony on DWTS. Not so much Melissa but I watch her to see Tony. LOL What a beautiful family.

Ariana’s eyes are so big and cute!!
