Gone are her nights spent battling vampires … on the horizon are midnight feedings! Former Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar and her husband, actor Freddie Prinze Jr. are expecting their first child, a source reveals to PEOPLE. Sharing that the baby is due this fall, the source says that the couple are “very excited” with the news. No further details are known.

Sarah Michelle and Freddie have been married six years. Next up for the expectant mama is the HBO pilot The Wonderful Maladays, with the 31-year-old signed on as an executive producer. Freddie recently wrapped shooting No Heroics, a pilot for ABC.

Congratulations to Sarah and Freddie! It’s about time they started a family. Baby’s gonna be gorgeous.

ashley on

Oh my gosh I am so excited for Sarah and Freddie, i’ve been waiting for years for this announcement!!!

abbs on

I don’t usually comment but i was so excited to hear this news. This is one celebrity couple that I have been waiting for to have a little one. I’ve loved them both since I know what you did last summer. I’m sooo happy for them!!!!

Karla on

Congrats Sarah and Freddie! I’ve been a huge SMG fan since Buffy and have been waiting for this announcement! Can’t wait to follow this pregnancy : )

Lacey on

From some reason, I didn’t think they were ever going to have kids. Congratulations!

Danyelle on

Wow! I’m so excited for them! I feel [oddly] like I’ve been waiting forever for an announcement from them. That’s gonna be one adorable baby! :)

HeatherR on

Kelli on

Oh yeaaaaaa I am so happy for them!!!

Mom on

Awesome news! They seem so “low key” Hollywood . . . now Im hoping for a NORMAL name . .

Kristen on

YEA…………soo excited for her!!

Leslie on

So excited for them! That baby is going to be gorgeous!

Miranda on

I am so happy for them! I was wondering when they were going to have kids as well. I’m glad that they waited though – definitely a smart thing to do – esp. in Hollywood. Freddie will be a great dad.

Sarah on

Lacey – I was just thinking the opposite. I thought she said in an interview not too awful long ago that they were hoping to have a child. It may have been another celebrity. Anyways, congrats to them. That baby will definetly have good genes!

eternalcanadian on

Whoa, now that I did not expect. Congratulations to them and have a safe pregnancy. Not sure why people say “it’s about time they started a family” because just because a couple is together or married doesn’t mean they are obliged to procreate, yeah? :-)

Ashleigh on

YAY! So happy for them!!!

Mikaylah on

Yay! I am such a fan of them both! I am so glad they are finally starting a family. Happy happy wishes to you both!

actualsize on

WOW that’s terrific news! I’m over the moon! This little baby is going to be very close in age to Satyana Denisof as well which makes me happy ^_^ Two ‘Buffy’ babies in one year! I bet this child will be beautiful, judging by his or her parents, and truly loved. I know that Freddie has said he’s determined to be the absolute best father in all the world to any children he’s blessed with, after the way he lost his own father.

Congratulations to the happy couple!

AJ on

Yay! Finally! :)

Amanda on

I LOVE this couple. I think Freddie seems like such a nice guy and him & Sarah compliment each other soo well so I’m so excited for this pregnancy. I guess I’m with Lacey & Danyelle & Ashley..I didn’t really expect it but I’ve been waiting for it anyway =) I hope we get to see pics of them throughout – I’m sure that baby will be GORGEOUS!

Holly on

For some reason I thought she was a few years older than 31…still young though. I also think it’s a good decision to wait to have kids, not only after one is out of their 20s (the 20s=freedom for me), but also after being married for several years. After all, when else will you have time to just completely be one-on-one with the man you married…2-3 years minimum after marriage. Why rush into having kids, especially if your only in your 20s..it just smells of desperation to me.

cécile on

Like others here I rarely comment but this is an announcement I hoped to hear for quite a time.I usually don’t get excited about people I have never met but I’ve always found this couple so likeable.
A few months ago when we learned Alyson Hannigan was pregnant,I caught myself thinking “Great! I hope the same annoucement from SMG one day soon”

Stacey on

Great news. Will be one cute little bub.

Jane on

That is so sweet. I’ve loved Sarah since her Buffy days.

Crystal on

I too thought they would never have children. This is a WONDERFUL ANNOUNCEMENT! CONGRATULATIONS to Sarah and Freddie!! The new baby will be a fabulous addition to their BEAUTIFUL family!!! ♥

Elizabeth on

Congrats!
I’ve been wondering when they were going to have a baby!

Marilyn on

I wondered when they were going to have children. Great news.

kmb on

yay i’m so excited, finally!! i grew up watching buffy, as well as all the great Freddie prinze jr movies! congrats!

ashley on

Holly, some young married couples want to have children earlier in their marriage because they don’t want to be old parents. My fiance and I have been together for 4 years now. It’s not my fault that I was only nineteen when I met him. So after 4 years of dating we plan on getting pregnant within 1.5 years of getting married. Sorry if that sounds desperate to you.

Sadie on

“Why rush into having kids, especially if your only in your 20s..it just smells of desperation to me.”

Why exactly does it smell of desperation. Some people are ready for children earlier than others. Just because someone is ready earlier than you were does not make it wrong or desperate.

CTBmom on

Very cool! My son and I were watching the Scooby Doo movie just yesterday. I love them as a couple, and I bet their little one to be is going to be adorable. Congrats to them!

robinepowell on

WOW! I never would have thought they’d have kids. I forgot they were married to each other, they are never in the spotlight, at least not that I can remember.

Congrats to them both, they deserve. I wonder, if they have boy, will he be Freddie Prinze III?

Elle on

bout time.

Elle on

I guess its because they’ve been married so long, its just most couples if they plan on having kids..have had one after 7 years…it was more in a joking way. Plus they got married kinda young they’re only 32 now.

shalay on

I am so excited to hear this announcement! I feel like I’ve been waiting for these two to get pregnant forever! Congrats to the both of them, I’m sure they’ll be fantastic parents.

As for how long they waited to have children, there’s no right or wrong amount of time to wait. Some people need more time, some people don’t. I don’t really understand how having children while in your 20′s “smells of desperation”, as as Holly said. Not everyone lives on the same timeline.

Bieta on

Congrats to them both!

While I don’t understand people who try to have kids when they’re in their early 20s…I don’t few it as desperation. I can understand late 20s(27+). I mean some people are ready for the responsibility but, just because I’m ready doesn’t mean I want it. Of course, to each her own but I’ve never understood the whole not wanting to be old when your kids grow up thing. My friend had her son at 20 and she’s psyched cause when he’s out the house she’ll be in her 40s…Who lives it up in their 40s?? Who goes to Cabo in their 40s?? Backpacking Europe??

Theres an old adage “almost bored enough to have kids” and thats pretty much what I think of when people start families barely out of their teens.

JMO, only!

dee on

That’s funny Alyson, Alexis, Sarah, and David will have all had babies in the same year. It’s like a tiny Whedon baby boom.

Sage on

I love them !!! I have been waiting for this announcement forever, the baby is going to be beautiful.

Lola on

Congratulations to Sarah and Freddie. I was wondering when they were going to have children. They are blessed.

Jennifer on

Yay…I’m so excited for them! Congratulations to Sarah Michelle and Freddie! :-)

Sarah on

Oh YAY!! That’s so exciting for them! I have also been wondering if they were planning on having kids. For some reason (like others here), I thought maybe they were just choosing not to. I think they will be great parents, and it’s wonderful that they have a solid 6-year marriage behind them – sadly, for Hollywood couples, that is very rare!

Ashlee on

That is great news…good for them. I’m glad they waited to have kids because I think its nice to have the time to enjoy marriage for a few years first!!

Mia on

Aw, finally!!!! I always wondered when they would have kids-

So exciting :) I’m thinking boy, but maybe a girl-who knows. That will be a very adorable baby.

say on

Yay! I love that Willow & Wesley (Alyson & Alexis), Angel (David Boreanaz), and now Buffy (Sarah) are having babies in the same year.

Jaclyn on

I love them and am so happy to hear of this.

To each his/her own, I for one got married really young by today’s standards(19)and will be 25 when our first baby arrives this November, but that was my choice. Who is anyone to call anyone else desperate for his/her choice?

Desperate is having a baby to keep a man, make a marriage work, find love, or because you feel rushed at X age, etc. Raising a child in a loving, healthy, and financially stable environment when you’re ready (whatever age that is)is never a desperate thing IMHO. Why can’t this thread be about this wonderful news?

erin h on

I was always wondering when they would start a family! So happy for them, that baby will be very good looking!

morgyn on

JUST last week, i said to my boyfriend (when Scooby Doo came on TV) ” those two are very due to have a baby!” and now an announcement!

Very exciting! Perhaps waiting was a better move…every couple is different.

Canshi on

So excited for them!!!!! Definately been waiting awhile for this one. This is going to be one gorgeous baby!!

Mrs. R. on

Congrats to Sarah & Freddie. It’s really exciting for them, although I feel a little sorry for the fact that they will lose a lot of their privacy for the next couple years… Just like with Alyson Hannigan, who was able to fly under the radar with her husband, as soon as there is a possibility of a celeb baby, then the paps start coming out in droves.

MaddKiwi on

I think most here said it for me, i too were wondering when Sarah would get pregnant. Alway’s been a fan of hers, i think i actually squeeled a little when i read this :-) I am so excited now, i do believe i am already etting impatient to see her baby bump, although it will probably be a little one as Sarah herself is so dinky :D

Just Saying on

Finally! So happy for them.

Aw, congrats! They’re my favourite.

Though, if the leak wasn’t intentional, I feel pretty bad that this was announced without their consent since they’re pretty private.

Nika on

Awh that is so great, congratulations! They really seem so different from most other celeb couples, they’ve been together for so long. That will be one gorgeous baby! Can’t wait to see Sarah Michelle with a baby bump, I’m sure she will look stunning!

alice jane on

Congratulations to them!!! I like that they are so private about their life; they seem pretty low-key and I bet this child and any future children Sarah and Freddie might have will have such a good life. I’ve been rewatching the last season of Buffy and remembering how much I loved Sarah in it!

rose on

wow just yesterday i read a report about her and was wondering when and if she would have a baby. she was pretty young when she married (at least by german standards)and i understand that she waited to see how stable her relationship is and to spend time just with her husband.

but i waited for it and my am i happy now.
just joking but wouldn`t it be cute if it were a boy and satyana denisof and him would end up together *g*

merce369 on

Just brilliant news! Congrats to happy parents-to-be!

Alice on

At last! *just joking*

I remember their wedding, and Sarah saying she didn’t want a baby just then but maybe later, I’m so happy for them!! Two Buffy babies how adorable :D

They’re on the top list of the baby I’m most excited about, espacially now that Satyana and Seraphina are born.

kai on

Congratulatons! Sarah is going to be SO gorgeous pregnant:)

(On a sidenote – and I don’t mean to sound harsh – I could have done without all the “it’s about time!”-comments. I remember Sarah’s reasoning to wait and I liked her attitude. Plus, maybe they tried all these years, who knows. Just saying.)

Sara on

I’m so happy for them. Congratulations Sarah Michelle and Freddie!
I’ve been waiting for this moment for years.
It makes me feel that something good came from Andy Hallett’s passing. Helping bring more joy into his Buffy/ Angel family!

Laura on

I am so exited for Sarah and Freddie. They are so lucky to have a strong relationship and to have a baby on the way. That baby will be so lucky because it will have a bril mom and dad. I can’t wait for her to have it.

Skipsie on

Congratulations! I thinking just the other day (watching Freddie as the male nanny on friends) if these two would ever have a baby!

Brianne on

Holly, I think that’s rude about your desperation comment. Maybe you feel that way for yourself, but it’s incredibly rude to say that about anyone else when you don’t know their situation. My husband and I have been married nearly 3 years and our daughter is 15 months – I am 27. How exactly is that desperate? You don’t know anyone’s story. We were threatened with severe fertility issues and decided that, although it was about a year earlier than we had planned on trying, we didn’t want to miss that window of opportunity and were very lucky. So please save your rude comments for another board, because the people here aren’t nearly as judgemental as you are!

That being said, congrats to them! I am not as huge a fan as SMG as some, but I always liked her, and especially Freddie. I think they are an adorable couple and I’m sure the baby will be precious, and no doubt, very loved. Can’t wait for CBB to follow her pregnancy

Lissette on

That’s fantastic news! Very happy for them! I’ve been married 6 years as well and been trying to have a baby for 5 so maybe they’ve been trying for a while too or just decided to wait. Either way congrats!! I’m predicting it’ll be a girl. ;)

Laura on

THIS IS THE BEST NEWS EVER!!! I have been waiting for this announcement. I am a huge SMG fan, I love and respect her work, I always respected her and Freddie’s decision on waiting cause they were busy and it seems like things have slowed down so yay I am so thrilled that they will be adding a baby into there lives. Boy/Girl I am sure the baby will be GORGEOUS!

Awww I can totally see Sarah and Alyson getting together with there new babies and having playdates.

It makes you feel old when you grew up with people like Sarah and shows like Buffy, Charmed, Friends and thats the generation and then they start welcoming the new generation with having kids. Its kinda amazing really.

Anyway so excited for them!.

Monique7 on

I am soooo happy for them. Sending a big Congrats to Sarah and Freddie. They’ll be great parents!!!!

Brittany on

Congrats to them, im sure they will be great parents!

As for Bietas comment, i think its very rude! Im 23, had my first baby at 22. While it may not be the ideal situation for you, it is for me. I love the idea that i’ll be able to enjoy my grandkids young, i always knew i wanted to be a younger mother. Different strokes for different folks i guess.

Jaedyn on

I have waited for this news since they got married! Yaay, I’m so happy for them! Maybe their little one and Satyana (Alyson Hannigan’s and Alexis Denisof’s little girl) can be playmates one day :)

bungalowbliss on

Sosososo happy for these two!!

Elizabeth Delaney on

Congrats Sarah & Freddie! Finally – I’ve been waiting! I always thought SMG would make a good mom! As for Bieta’s comment, if someone is in their early 20s and know they can financially support that child, it is their own business and decision to have that child. Some people just want to be young moms because they have that philosophy/thinking that they will be able to still be active, etc. when that child grows older. You’d be surprised how active some people are in their 40s. My mom probably can job more kilometres than I can and she’s in her 50s and I’m 21. Clearly, my decision would not be having kids by the time I’m 23 because I’m in vet school and such profession would not allow me to be a “young mom” – at least to my mind. But for other people? It’s solely their decision and their business and I feel like we should respect that.

Harley on

OMG! So called it on the Buffy baby year! LOL, I’m SO excited for them!!!!!!!

What happened to having freedom of speech? Everytime someone makes a post, someone always has to say that they are offended. It’s an opinion people! If they dont live with you 24/7 or know what’s going on, why get upset? These individuals, along with you, have a right to express their opinions, without being attacked simply because their views are not the same as yours. Some of you members need to get off your high horse and take a chill pill. Seriously.

Jessica on

Finally!!! They’ve been together forever. Congrats to them.

Sam on

Holly- Just because you have a child in your 20′s does not mean that you are desperate. I particularly did not feel the “need” to be “free” during my twenties. I feel that children can sometimes benefit from having a younger mother vs. one who is in her 40′s. I have a ton of energy and I was able to get my body back…..not to mention, I didn’t want to have kids close in age, but I would like to have another one when my daughter is 8-10…..AND guess what, I’ll still be young enough to be a part of his/her life!

So happy for Freddie and SMG! Their baby will be precious.

Lynn on

I’m so excited about this! I’ve been waiting for this announcement for a long time.

Well said Kevia! I agree 100% ;)

Bugs on

Holly, what the heck are you talking about???? Desperate? They’ve been together for YEARS! You actually wanted them to wait even more? I’m happy for them, congratulations!

Sadie on

“I feel that children can sometimes benefit from having a younger mother vs. one who is in her 40’s.”

Just as I had a problem with Holly’s comment claiming young Moms are desperate, I also have a problem with people claiming being a young Mom is somehow superior to being an older Mom. No one way is write. Why in the world can’t people just do what works for them and stop acting like their way is somehow superior to someone else’s. Good grief, young Moms are not necessarily any more desperate than older Moms and older Moms are not automatically devoid of energy and unable to keep up with their kids. The lack of respect for other people’s choices on this site is astounding.

Elindsey on

This is such wonderful news! I was actually just watching the episode of FRIENDS last night where Freddie is the “manny”!!! SO HILARIOUS! I love this couple because they do seem really low key and normal. It is nice to see people who don’t surround themselves with drama be in the news. Congrats!

Bieta on

I don’t know how it’s rude. I don’t really know how many times someone can say ‘I’ or ‘me’ or ‘JMO’ or ‘IMO’ before people get that its just an opinion. Generally every comment here is an opinion and not worth getting upset about. I didn’t say people who have kids at 21 are stupid, I said its a decision that I can’t understand because for ME I have other things I’d like to do.

Bieta on

P.S- You can be a lazy, fat young mom. Or a super fit 40 year old. You can be a 40 year old mom and still be able to watch your kids, grandkids and great-grand kids grow up. Or you can die at age 27(god forbid). There really is no way to know where life is going to take you.

Stella Bella on

Congratulations to them! This is wonderful news!

Oh my God!!!! IF this is true, then I am so freaking excited : ) After so long together, I wondered if the couple wanted to have children at all (which of course, if they didn’t, would have been their perrogotive). However, we have to be very careful with “sources” other than couples themselves announcing pregnancy news. Why, just two years ago, Nelly Furtado, SJP, AND Kate Hudon were all “expecting” according to “sources close to the couples”. And ummmm, WHERE exactly are all those kids???

lizzielui on

I hate when people misinterpret what freedom of speech means. Freedom of Speech does not mean that people put forth opinions in an open forum without others reacting to it. If you say something so others will hear you or are able to read what you have to say, of course people are gong to react. Some may agree with you, others may disagree. Still, people have a right to get offended by anything that anyone says. You may not agree with it, but it is their right to voice the likes or displeasures with whatever statement that was made publicly. You can’t in one breath be an advocate of freedom of speech and then denounce another person’s right to voice displeasure with said speech. The freedom is that both sides get to have their say without threat of persecution, incarceration, or exile.

As for Sarah and Freddie, CONGRATS!

Bieta on

I wonder if its harder for couples who’ve been married for a long time to make the transition to a couple with kids.

Jessica on

Wow. Congrats to Freddie and Sarah!!!!!!

Courtney on

geez! where did this go so wrong…a simple congrats is all thats needed and somehow it got to the differences between young and older moms. And my pet peeve =the words fat and lazy together….

Sometimes people should just think before they type and try to remember that there are other people reading these things…

Congrats to Sarah and Freddie, I have been a fan of hers since AMC!

Laura on

How wonderful! 3 Buffy babies in one year… Look forward to more updates from CBB! x

Monika on

It’s a Buffyverse baby boom. First Alyson Hannigan, Then David Boreanaz announced he and his wife were expecting another baby and now SMG. And from the announcement David made earlier, it sounds like their babies won’t be born too far apart. I can just sense a playdate coming on (Alyson, David and Sarah and their babies).

Brooklyn on

Congrats to them both!

Shannon on

Woohoo!!!!! I call a girl!

It’s so wonderful to see a couple in Hollywood who took the time to develop a sound, stable marriage and then have kids. There are so many who do it all backwards, or really fast, and then whine and moan about how they can’t figure out where things went wrong. Good for the Prinzes! They seem like they will be wonderful parents, and they are one of the few Hollywood couples that I could honestly see still being together 50 years from now.

Brittany on

EEEEEK!!!! I’ve been waiting for these two to have a baby. So happy for them they are going to be great parents.

Kevia on

To lizzielui: Oh I’m fully aware of what freedom of speech means, nor am I trying to be an advocate for freedom of speech. And I never said that you could not disagree either. However, some of you members have been going a little overboard with the comments lately. I can understand if you say something on the lines of “Well I disagree with such and such,” but labeling someone rude? Telling someone you’re offended because they gave a certain age limit as to when to start a family? Excuse me? There was nothing “rude” inside Bieta’s or anyone else’s post that reflected what she said. It’s not like she called Sarah or Freddie a derogatory name, or anything like that. I also find it funny how most of you members do the exact same thing, yet when someone else does it, everyone wants to jump on that same person. All I’m saying is, if what someone is saying does not apply to you, then why get upset. I am a young married woman (24 been married since 18) and am expecting my first child. Believe me, I am the least bit upset at people who think that being a mother at a young age is wrong. I know that I am capable of being a good mother, and no amount of opinions is going to make me feel otherwise. Yet it seems like on this site, that everytime a celebrity does something, or when someone says something, that if it does not agree with your views, you want to go into attack mode. Instead of trying to understand that people live their lives different, you believe that their wrong simply because their lives are not the same as yours.

Doreen on

Wow, this is shocking!! I thought they would never have kids! :) This is awesome news! So excited for them!! :) I can see it now…’Buffy the next Generation’! :) I knew when I first saw Sarah Michelle Gellar a loooong time ago on the show ‘Girl Talk’…that she would be a Star and she is! Amazing. We’re the same age-31! :)

What Kevia said. I’m not trying to tell anyone how to live, its just a view I have. I have a lot of young mothers as friends and they know my view and believe it or not a lot of them though they love their kids, actually support my way of thinking. Some say bieta, shut up. Its all good.

Kevia-congrats on your pregnancy, best wishes.

Kristin on

Sorry, but I think playdates with Satyana Denisof and Baby Prinze are pretty much out of the question. Alyson and SMG had a very public falling out when Buffy ended and have not spoken since.

But anyway, I’m very happy for Freddie and Sarah! I know he really wanted to have kids for a while now.

lizzielui on

Kevia, while I understand your logic and frustration the bottom line is it cannot be a public forum and freedom of speech unless ideas are shared freely. Maybe you didn’t mean to question actual freedom of speech in your post. Who knows? But I was simply pointing out something that happens quite often the misinterpretation of what freedom of speech actually means. One cannot decide for someone what they should or shouldn’t think is rude or offensive. Yeah it may seem silly, or judgemental or whatever but it is still their right to feel that way. If I am confused about where someone is coming from or if I think they are way off base I often ask, “How did you come to that conclusion?” because I really am curious. Of course I am frustrated more often than not by a lot of the celeb bashing or holier than thou views that are often portrayed in the comments section here on this site. Happens almost everyday actually. There are certain posts that I refuse to read the comments for because I know it’s going to get my juices boiling. I loathe the sometimes venomous opinions that are given towards baby name choices, the logic behind nannies, or breastfeeding and C-section choices. It does become overkill after a while. Still, it’s a public forum so I have learned that I have to take the good with the bad. Usually if I have something to say, I say it and let me voice be heard to either agree or counter anything that someone else has to say that I strongly disagree with. Generally, aside from commenting on whatever picture is being shown, I think that is what everyone is trying to do, defend or express their beliefs. Yeah it rubs me the wrong way often, but that is the price I pay for being invloved in open discussions.

Awesome! I’ve waited so long to hear about this… I’m so happy for them can’t wait to read on the pregnancy!

I agree, in a non-confrontational way, that not all parents who have children in their 20′s are desperate. Sometimes fertility issues arise and it is best to have children younger. I was told by a doctor at the age of 21 that if I wanted children I might want to consider having them very soon because the longer I waited the worse my endometriosis would most likely be. This was after 2 laproscopy surgeries in 2 years. I had been married at 19 and had been with my husband since I was 14 so I was lucky that I was in a position to have children at the time. That being said we had one and then waited 4 years to have our second and it took 2 years and MANY dr.’s visits to have our second child. So everything isn’t always black or white. Life happens.

@Patrice

lol, good point, but in general people magazine is very celebrity friendly. It’s a reliable source.

@Kristin
I never heard about that. why was that? (just curious)

I was just thinking about this lovly couple the other day as I was watching I know What You Did Last Summer. I’m very excited and happy for them!!! They are such a cute couple and it’s good to hear such great news! Congrats!

sinclair on

congrats SMG and Freddie!!!

I’m thinking it is a girl, but if they have a boy I hope they go for a different name. The whole passing a name down thing for males only is quite outdated.

Maybe they’ll have an SMG, Jr.!!!!

Becky on

How much do you want to bet that in 1 month we will get another announcement that it’s twins? Come on…anyone? It’s rare nowadays if someone DOESN’T have twins! :)

Congrats for them though. I love them as a couple!

Kelly on

I am so happy for them! Congratulations!

I hope we get to see the baby. With how private they are, I am sure we will never get to see a picture of the little guy/girl.

I have heard that the 40′s are the new 30′s. I personally decided to have my first baby at 22. After being with my husband since high school, we felt ready for the next step. I liked being a young mom because I had more energy to handle my 3 little boys that are less than 4 years apart. I will be 44 when my YOUNGEST graduates high school and then we will have many (youthful) years of traveling, etc…before retirement. My hope is that I’ll be a fairly young grandmother (not too young I hope) but young enough to have be helpful and involved with my grandchildren for a long time. I understand why some people want to wait and I respect that. I just thought those people might be able to understand that what is right for some may not be right for others.

Congrats to them! How long have they been married? Like 6yrs?

When you want to have children is YOUR decision. I too think having children before you are in your mid 20′s is an immature decision but that is MY opinion. You think you will have this wonderful life in your 40′s when the kids have graduated but I don’t know a single parent who has actually done that. It’s primarily due to young parents not building a career, especially the mothers, and not going back to work to earn the money to provide a financially secure future not just for the kids but for themselves also. Statistics show the majority of young married couples and young parents are from poorer socio-economic backgrounds. It’s just stacking the odds against your golden years by not building your career for personal and financial reasons. There are always exceptions to any rule but you can’t argue with facts. With the odd exception, stay at home mothers married to a “bread winner” are painting themselves into a corner.

The most disturbing aspect of this “conversation” are those who said things like “finally!” and “about time”. How ridiculous! Can they not just get married without the intention of having children? I have a lot more respect for them than I do for those couples who rush into marriage because of pregnancy or get married and start having babies withing 24 months.

I wish Sarah-Michellle and Freddie the absolute of luck. They seem to be a lovely couple. Being together for so many years before having a child can only strengthen the odds of them surviving the trend of Hollywood seperations.

FC on

Well, it’s about damn time!I didn’t know if I’d ever see them announce they’re expecting the pitter-patter of little feet in their house. I’m happy for them, and I can’t wait to hear more. :)

Ericka, they married September 1 2002, so they are coming up to their seventh anniversary. I only remember the date so well because of the episode in Buffy that Sarah didn’t appear in very much, as she was in Mexico for some of the time for the wedding ^_^

Rebecca on

That’s a shocker! I thought they had said they weren’t sure if they wanted kids. For some reason I thought they were older. Grats to them!

Julie on

Yay, I knew they’d have children when they were ready.
My husband and I waited 7 years before trying to have kids and luckily got pregnant with our son right away. I used to get really annoyed when people would assume we just didn’t want kids. We just wanted to be as ready as we could be emotionally and financially given that we got married pretty young, and I feel we are better parents now than we would have been when we first got married.
Not the case for everyone, but it worked for us, and I’m very happy for them too.

CelebBabyLover on

kai- I agree! My parents didn’t have kids until 7 years after they married, and guess what? It wasn’t by choice!

For all we know, SJP and Freddie were also struggling with infertility.

This is getting ridiculous. Anxiety is going to prevent many people from commenting soon (if that hasn’t happened already). Iizzielui, I agree with your views on the freedom of speech. I often feel the need to copy-paste a disclaimer every time I comment. Freedom of speech shouldn’t be used as a silencer everytime someone disagrees with someone else.

hkdiaz on

Congrats! I’m not getting into the debate about ages, I’m just hapy that they have a long lasting and seemingly stable marriage (7 yrs in Hollywood time is looooong!)and I think its smart that they waited a while.

Finally! I thought they were married longer. That baby will be gorgeous. I’m wondering if they have a son will he be Freddie III.

Here’s an example of what both Sarah and Freddie have said about their family plans over the years, if anyone is interested. They always wanted kids, they just wanted to wait till the time was right.

“Clearly home and happiness are important to Sarah. So, do she and Freddie have any plans of starting a family of their own? ‘Absolutely. At the moment, all of our friends are starting to have children and it does make you think about it,’ admits Sarah. ‘Ultimately, I think everyone’s dream is to be fulfilled, get married and have kids. But having kids is such a huge step in your life, it has to be at the time when both people are ready for it,’ she suggests. ‘So, when we’re both ready, we will. But until then, I think we’ll maybe just baby-sit.’”
(2002)

“And what about starting a family with husband Freddie Prinze? “On my day off in one day? Wow, you know something I don’t know.,” she responds, laughingly. “You mean am I prioritising having a baby? I’m not ready to start seriously thinking about that. I’m only 27 years old so please, I have some time.” (2004)

“Sarah Michelle Gellar says she can’t imagine becoming a mum just yet, because she always has such a hard time looking after her friends’ kids. “We’ll have children somewhere down the line but not yet,” she explains. “Borrowing my friends’ kids is the best form of birth control because I’m so tired after I’ve had them for an afternoon that I’m like: ‘Let’s wait a few more years.’” (2004)

Awws! I have been waiting a long time for them to announce they were going to have a child/children. I have heard several rumors of them expecting over the last few years but have not heard any baby news, so I guess the rumors were false. But atleast this is confirmed! Yay! Can’t wait to see what the baby will look like! If they have a girl, they should name her Buffy or give her the middle name of Buffy… It’s just a weird thoguht but it might be cute, lol. ;D <3 XXD

CelebBabyLover on

sinclair- It isn’t for boys only! I’ve heard of girls named after their mothers as well (for example, Donald Trump’s daughter is basically named after her mother. Ivanka is a diminutive form of the name Ivana.).

actualsize on

Anon – I love the name Freddie for a girl too. One female character in ‘Angel’ is called Fred (short for Winifred) which I love. Not sure I’d ever be brave enough to use it on my own daughter, either.

I think it is great to be married for a while before you have children. My husband and I have been together for 15 years and married for 8. I hear the comments all the time “oh when are you guys going to have kids? you’ve been married for so long already”. Kids are not in our plans but why should I feel like I need to have them because everyone else feels that I should..

KellyParis on

About time! hehe

Maddie on

I love that they decided to have a baby when the time was right for them. They wanted to be husband and wife together for a few years, which is great. Cos once kids come along, you don’t get that back. I think it’s a very smart thing to do.

Terri on

It seems like every time a celebrity talks about how they’re not ready to get pregnant, they soon after announce a pregnancy! Congratulations to Sarah and Freddie!

Tina on

lol if you wanna have kids when your 25 or around there theres nothing wrong with it, heck my mom was 24. if i ever have a kid ill probably be 23 or 24 around there because i dont wanna be 50 with a 10-year-old. people should have kids when they feel comfortable doing so… theres nothing wrong with having a kid at 25 and does not make you desperate or whatever.

Tina on

also it really bothers me when people think you are being immature or whatever when your in your twentys and have a kid. my Grandma was 18 when she had my mom and my mom was 24 when she had me so dont judge people, theres nothing wrong with it. i mean, if my Grandma didnt have my mom i wouldnt of been created. everything happens for some kind of reason and everyone is made differently and have different morals and views, i respect Sarah and Freddie for doing what they wanted to do, but not everyone is the same and feel the same way they do.

Kimmy on

HOT DAMN I LOVE IT!! Congratulations to Sarah & Freddie! This is wonderful news and I wish them nothing but the best of luck.

taegan on

CONGRATULATIONS to them.

alanna'smom on

Well I guess if you consider children an undesirable burden you would not want the responsibility in your early 20′s. Some people are just excited to start a family (like my husband and I) and that’s why they choose early parenthood. It’s not like your life is over and you can never have fun again, parenthood is not a death sentence! (Though the early years can feel that way, lol)

Anyway, congrats to the couple! I think they picked the perfect age cause it’s right in the middle!

nicole on

congras freddy and michelle. that is awasome. finally there is some news about you two.

Aya on

Holly & Bieta, those comments are so infantile and laughable to someone like me. I “matured” earlier.I lived it up and vacationed and partied and everything up until 20 when I got married. I was even a teacher in Korea for a bit. My husband and I vacationed and enjoyed our 4 years together before our baby was born at 25. Was I in any way desperate ?? No, my husband an I viewed it as a natural progression of things. We were at the right time and mentality in our lives.

While I understand you have your right to an opinion, to generalize in the way that you have is wrong. No two people are alike. It is wrong to assume that we are all doing these things for the same reasons.

I find that your comments ae extremely hurtful for those people who cannot concieve, esp people who missed the opportunity (because of illness etc like the endometriosis story above) and for those who are still having problems.

I really hope people with your opinions get what you want and have your kids when you want, because if you get them, methinks you will resent that poor child for the most stupid reasons.

Aaahh this is great! I’ve been waiting for this announcement for YEARS!!!!! Congrats! So freaking happy for them!

I wasn’t going to respond to this discussion but I think I will now. My thoughts are:

1. Couples in their 20′s are not necessarily immature.
2. Couples in their 40′s are not necessarily unfit or unable to look after children.
3. Couples who have children in their 20′s do not necessarily discard their careers in order to procreate.

I know numerous people who have visited both sides of the coin. Several of my closest friends have married (or are living in a committed relationship) young and even had children. They are all highly mature and aware of their decision and happy with the place in their lives. I also know several people who have waited until their mid to late thirties to have children. I know yet another who never got the chance to have children because the right man didn’t come along. One of the mothers in their 30s spent so long building her career that she nearly missed out on the opportunity to have children due to infertility problems. Another of my friends who tried to conceive after marrying at the age of 21 endured the trauma of a stillborn child.

I think that everybody has their right to voice their opinions, but this is my opinion: generalisation is something that really shouldn’t happen on a public forum like this. A number of the comments here have been highly generalised. Some people might have been taking a wee bit too much personal offence to what has been said, but as somebody else pointed out, that is the price you pay (in regards to free speech) when you voice your opinion.

In other news, I really congratulation SMG and FPJ. I’ve never folllowed Buffy at all but always thought that these two were such a great couple and a real model of commitment and deep love for one another.

I have a slight sense of ‘At last’ but only because everyone loves to see a little baby come along from a great couple…that thought in no way indicates that I think they were wrong for waiting. It’s great that it’s finally happened, but then again if they chose not to have kids, or couldn’t, it would be understandable also. I think their reasoning for waiting was a really nice one and am really happy for them and their future family.

kait on

That child is going to be wicked beautiful! Congrats, they’ve waited so long for this to happen I hope nothing but the best for them.
