Tim Conboy Welcomes Son Gunnar Price

It’s a boy for Carolina Hurricanes player Tim Conboy and his wife Sheena. The couple welcomed son Gunnar Price Conboy on Thursday, April 3rd at 8:20 p.m. — while his dad’s team was beating the New York Rangers 4-2! Gunnar weighed in at 9 lbs., 2 oz.

Tim, who plays defense for the Hurricanes, “was going to try and make it to the game,” he explains. “We got to the hospital at 6 a.m. They took a look and thought maybe 2 o’clock and I might get to the game.” However, Gunnar had different plans for dad! “I was able to be there with her and witness the birth. The boys got the two points. It was a happy night for everybody,” he laughs.

As for Gunnar’s name, Tim, 27, explains that both he and Sheena are of Irish descent and that Gunnar means “bold warrior.” “A little bit like I play, kind of,” jokes Tim.

Congrats to them!

We are a hockey family as well. I gave birth to my daughter (our 3rd baby) at 4:45pm and my husband had our son to his hockey game by 6pm! Some of the families were shocked he was there but I pretty much made them go!

The last time I checked, Gunnar was Scandanavian lol. That’s what I intend on naming my future boy.

Sorry but i don’t see the connection between he and his wife being of Irish descent and naming their child Gunnar. It seems, from the way the article is written anyway, that he thinks Gunnar is a Gaelic name. It is actually a very old Scandinavian name, derived from the German Günther, which simply means “army, war” and “warrior” – no adjective like “bold” is included in its meaning. Nothing to do with Irish names and no connection with them. Which they would have known if they had properly researched their son’s name. Or if they cared to find out about the culture they’re supposedly so proud to be a part of.

I immediately thought they were from Scandinavia when I saw the name.

Gunnar? I really don’t care what the origin in. Why would someone name their child anything with the word “gun”?

My friends name is Gunnar and he’s souther but with Icelandic routes. Its a nice name.

because the name has nothing to do with guns. jeez.

So proud to be Irish that they gave him a . . . Scandinavian name. Yep. A little more research next time perhaps! It’s a nice name though, whatever they were aiming for.

Yeah, I have a couple of relatives in Sweden with the name Gunnar.

I was also surprised to see them make a link between Gunnar and Irish heritage. There is certainly Scandinavian influence in Britain and Ireland due to the Vikings, but this seems to be a pretty clearly Scandinavian name.

In the Mighty Ducks movies, I’m pretty sure there was an opposing team player from…Norway? who was named Gunnar. :)

I also wanted to throw out there that Price is a Welsh name. (I don’t know if they had a particular reason behind that choice or not). It comes from “ap Rhys,” or “Son of Rhys.”

I like the name Gunner (I prefer this spelling). It’s been on our list but probably won’t wind up a finalist. Plus we’re Arsenal fans (British soccer) and they’re called the Gunners. :)
