“One Pack = One Vaccine” is a global initiative to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, a preventable disease that claims the lives of approximately 128,000 infants and 30,000 mothers in less industrialized nations each year. By purchasing specially-marked packs of Pampers diapers and wipes from February 5, 2009 through May 1, 2009, consumers in the United States and Canada automatically trigger a vaccination to a pregnant woman or woman of child-bearing age in a developing nation.

Mom and actress Salma Hayek returns as the international spokesperson for the program and continued to demonstrate her commitment to the campaign on her recent trip to Sierra Leone with UNICEF, where she witnessed firsthand the vital issue of maternal and neonatal tetanus. During her trip, Salma met with local UNICEF representatives to discuss the impact of the campaign and see the dramatic reduction in annual newborn deaths, from 215,000 in 1999 to approximately 128,000 in 2004, saving 87,000 babies’ lives each year. While there is significant progress, much work has yet to be done.

Together, we can help save a life!

Michael Weiss Juggles Skating and Fatherhood

Ed Andrieski/AP

Professional figure skater Michael Weiss has the best of both worlds — for six months out of the year, he is a stay-at-home dad to 10-year-old Annie-Mae and 9-year-old Christopher, and the other six he’s on the road with Smucker’s “Stars on Ice.” Being away from his kids and wife Lisa for the time he’s on tour is hard on the skater — despite meeting up for mini-vacations throughout the tour — but no matter where he is, Michael makes sure to call his kids each night to put them to bed. Though they’re young, Michael and Lisa recently decided to give each of their kids their own cellphone due to the various activities that they are involved in. However, there are only a few people they have permission to call! “They’re only allowed to call their ‘Fave Five’ list,” which includes both Michael, Lisa, their home number and “maybe an aunt or an uncle.”

Michael began skating when he was just a boy, but so far neither of his children have shown much interest in the sport. “My daughter skated for about six months at one point,” but soon quit after becoming overbooked. “She had a bunch of activities,” Michael explains. “I was like, ‘There’s so many days in the week we can fit them … narrow it down to three things from the five that you’re doing.’ I don’t necessarily want to them to do what I’m doing just because I did it.” Michael’s parents were supportive and helped him to be his best, so he tries to do the same for his kids. “You have to find a balance as to when you’re pushing too hard,” he says. He also feels that parents should be their children’s role models, and that’s the reason he finds the entire Michael Phelpsbong incident quite sad. He shares,

“I think it’s a shame that it happened. I think role models should be your parents … If my kid is completely idolizing one person so much that they’re going to start doing any and everything that that athlete does, I don’t think I’m doing my job.”

Even though he was the first U.S. man to land a quadruple toe loop in competition — and the former National Fatherhood Initiative’s Father of the Year — Michael feels that “one’s a lot more important than the other … being a parent is a lot more important because you have a lot more influence. Landing a quad may have made a lot of difference in the skating world, [but] I’m glad to have had both.”

Pregnancy News Left Jill Scott in 'Shock'

Frank Micelotta/Getty

After being told by doctors that she would never conceive, Jill Scott experienced “complete and utter shock” when she learned that she was pregnant. The day she realized she was expecting, Jill was preparing to travel to Botswana for filming of her new series, HBO’s No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. The news “stopped things for a moment absolutely. I was told I was pregnant on Friday, and I was supposed to be leaving that day at noon. I found out at 10 a.m.” Jill shares,

“I called my doctors and of course, I called my family to let everyone know and to find out if it was okay to travel for that long distance during my first trimester of pregnancy. I wanted to know that I was all right because I hadn’t had any shots. What were the possibilities? I wanted to know them all. Once I got the go-ahead from my doctors, I left the following day.”

Once she arrived in Botswana, filming “was a challenge” for the actress. The temperatures were in the 100s and “being pregnant and the heat were very difficult for me; but I had great doctors around me. The crew really paid attention.” Jill counts herself lucky because the crew “didn’t seem to mind [her pregnancy] so much.” However, she did feel pressure because “there was a deadline and I’m the lead. As far as I know, I’m the first African-American woman to be the lead of an HBO series, so there was a lot of pressure to get the job done, even between morning sickness.”

As for her next acting gig, Jill, who starred in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?, would definitely sign on to a sequel — if one was planned. “I’m eight months pregnant right now so I would love for my character to either be pregnant or want to have a child.” Her reasoning? “There are a lot of difficulties with people trying to conceive. I would like to see that topic addressed.”

Jill, 36, and her fiancé Lil Jon Roberts expect their baby boy on April 25th. The couple have picked out a name for their son — but will “wait til [they] see his face” to see if it fits!
