Melanie Brown: My Girls Won't Be 'Hollywood Children'

Fame

In Melanie Brown‘s household, the perks of having a famous mom do not include getting off scot-free from chores! Determined to raise her two girls — Phoenix Chi, 10, and Angel Iris, 23 months — to learn the lessons of “responsibility early,” the Spice Girls mama tells Closer magazine that each child is already in charge of their play areas. “Phoenix has chores to do and I make sure Angel tidies up after herself,” she says.

Although raising her family in Los Angeles, the 33-year-old is making a conscious effort to avoid having her daughters become a product of their environment. “They won’t end up being Hollywood children, down [at the] shops using mum’s credit card,” she promises. Despite Melanie’s tough love policies, she is happy to combine the joy of gifting to her girls with a quick lesson of responsibility. Recently buying Phoenix her “first pay-as-you-go [cell] phone,” Melanie is allowing her daughter to determine her own amount of minutes earned.

“So if she does her chores and is good, she gets pocket money, so she can afford to top it up.”

Clearly thrilled with her family, Melanie explains that ensuring Phoenix and Angel stay grounded does not mean her children aren’t being raised with love and affection. “My kids are loved — not spoiled,” she shares. However, the proud mama can’t help but joke that she often wonders what the “payback” teenage years will bring! “If [Phoenix]‘s anything like I was, then I’ll be in for quite a ride — I was a big handful,” she reveals.

Phoenix is Melanie’s daughter with dancer Jimmy Gulzar; Angel is her daughter with actor Eddie Murphy.

Available in three styles — Bridge ($45-$50) , Benicia ($45-50) and Creekside ($50-55) – Ahnu’s children’s shoes are every bit as sturdy and stylish as their adult counterparts. Read More

Gwyneth Paltrow: Parenthood Has Given Me a New Perspective on Life

Richard Young/Startraks

Since becoming a mother in 2004 when she welcomed her daughter Apple Blythe Alison, little of actress Gwyneth Paltrow‘s life has gone untouched. “Motherhood has changed me in every way. It changed everything from my DNA on up,” she reveals to OK!. “My perspective is so much different and the way I spend my day is different.” For the actress, who is currently working on several films, that time during the day is often spent missing her 4 ½-year-old daughter and 2 ½-year-old son Moses as she finds herself wondering what her brood is up to. However, despite longing for her family, Gwyneth has no complaints. “It is also nice to acknowledge that I am a woman, I’m an artist, I work and it’s part of who I am,” she explains.

Those long hours spent on set, in addition to her husband Coldplay frontman Chris Martin‘s successful career, has provided the proud parents with the means to offer the world to Apple and Moses – and Gwyneth is making it her priority to raise two appreciative and grounded children.

“I always try to instill that they’re very lucky and most children don’t get the things that they get. [I teach them] to be mindful and hopefully it will stick with them.”

With Chris out on tour with his band, the 37-year-old relies on her mother, actress Blythe Danner for support — and an extra set of hands! Clearly elated to spend time with her grandchildren, Blythe admits that listening to the children confess how much they miss her is music to her ears. “I love that,” she says. As for her daughter, the 66-year-old grandmother has only admiration for the life she leads. “Gwyneth is brilliant. She’s an extraordinary mother. She’s wonderful,” she gushes, adding that she is “very proud of her.”

Atlas: Behind Anne Heche's Name Choice

Fred Hayes/WireImage

With many readers expressing their opinions on Anne Heche and James Tupper‘s choice of Atlas for their first child together, we spoke to Linda Rosenkrantz, co-owner of NameBerry, as well as co-author of The Baby Name Bible: The Ultimate Guide By America’s Baby-Naming Experts to get her take on the moniker and the popularity of mythological names.

“With Anne Heche naming her son Atlas so soon after Erykah Badu called her baby girl Mars, it’s beginning to look like a mini-trend developing! Some celebrity parents suddenly seem to be making little gods and goddesses — instant objects of worship — of their infants right from day one. Names that were previously considered too powerful for a mortal baby to carry (after all, Atlas was the Titan who bore the weight of the heavens on his shoulders, and Mars was the Roman god of war) now seem to have descended from Mt. Olympus into the realm of human possibility.

And Atlas and Mars aren’t the only mythic starbabies. Chris Noth has a son called Orion, Metallica’s James Hetfield is father to Castor, and Kelly Rutherford‘s son is Hermés – messenger of the gods — as well as a modern fashion icon. Constance Marie just named her daughter Luna, Coldplay’s Will Champion called one of his twins Juno, and Patricia Arquette bestowed Calliope upon daughter Harlow as a middle name. Some other goddess and muse names in the air: Aurora, Clio, Maia and Venus.”

What do you think of mythological names? Would/did you use one for your child?
