Ani DiFranco Happily Hops Off Her 'Hamster Wheel'

Bill Haber/AP

Like everything meaningful in her life, Ani DiFranco says that her 2-year-old daughter Petah Lucia has factored into her music. “It is amazing to have a kid and be forced to step away from myself a lot, and you come back and you can see things that you don’t see when you spend all day with your thoughts,” the 38-year-old singer/songwriter tells Creative Loafing. “I think a baby is a really good influence for me that way.”

“I’m trying to write about the good side of life more because I think it’s been omitted from a lot of my…epics.”

Emphasis on ‘trying!’ Ani admits that Petah often zaps her time and energy, leaving little left over for making music. “It can feel a bit artistically constipated sometimes,” she admits before adding “but I welcome it.”

“It’s a big change, like it is for all parents, but, for me, I’m at the right point in my life to get off my hamster wheel for a second and just hang out and have more contemplative time, which serves us in the end.”

Petah is Ani’s first child with husband Mike Napolitano.

Nick Cannon, Mariah Carey 'Letting Nature Take its Course'

Isaac Brekken/AP

Next month Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey, 38, will celebrate their first wedding anniversary, and like most newlyweds they’re often asked when they’ll have a baby. While the couple are “definitely working towards” parenthood, Nick tells USA Today that there were “a couple of things” they wanted to “get established first.”

“You want to enjoy each other for the first year, and we’ve traveled quite a bit…When you start a union, that has to be one of things that is on the forefront of your mind, but we’re so busy with everything else.”

Nick, 28, goes on to reveal that although he and his songstress wife are not yet ready for opening night, dress rehearsals are well underway! “We love each other, so we’re constantly in practice,” he jokes. “We’re going to let nature take its course, but the course is not a long one.”

Infantino Activity Blocks: Crunchy Cubes Of Curiosity

Infantino’s new set of activity blocks ($15) is designed to stimulate babies with crunchy sounds, bright colors and varied textures. Each of the four cubes is made from different fabrics from shiny satin to plush velvet to wide-wale corduroy. Crunchy, jingly and rattly sounds are fascinating for the little guys. A teething key and a squishy airplane dangle from two of the blocks and a secret door opens on another, while colorful fabric prints show numbers and letters. They stack so baby can knock them over. So simple but so cute!

Nicolas Cage Likes to Keep His Kids Close By

Albert Ferreira/Startraks

While the shock and awe of a movie set is still enough to endlessly entertain a toddler, the thrill of life on location is long gone for teenagers, says actor Nicolas Cage. With his new movie Knowing in theaters the end of this month, the 45-year-old father of two reveals that the large age gap between his boys – 15 years — called for a unique take on tagging along with their dad during his filming schedule. “It’s interesting for awhile,” Nicolas tells OK!. “One’s 18, the other’s 3 ½, so it’s a new experience for one, and not such a new experience for the other.”

Although the actor’s older son Weston Coppola may find the routine on set to be old hat, Nicolas admits that having his family close by is a priority. “It’s more enjoyable for me to have my family with me when I’m working,” he says. “I never like to be too far away from my family.” In fact, according to the proud papa, his inspiration for his countless Hollywood film roles boils down to three people: wife Alice Kim, Weston, 18, and Kal-El, 3.

“If I’m able to do the work I do, it’s because of them.”

Kal-El is Nicolas’ son with Kim, while Weston is Nicolas’ son with Christina Fulton.

Knowing is in theaters March 20th.
