The death of a child is something that no parent could ever forget, but Philadelphia Phillies’ infielder Marcus Giles has a constant reminder of his loss tattooed on his left arm. The series of numbers represent the GPS coordinates of his daughter Lundyn Mae‘s headstone, he tells the Philadelphia Inquirer. Born 12 weeks prematurely in 2002, Lundyn survived just 16 days outside the womb. “We prayed and prayed until she died,” Marcus, 30, recalled. “Obviously, it was a nightmare, but you know she is in a better place.” He adds,

“She doesn’t have to suffer anymore. She doesn’t have to worry about the kinds of infections or diseases that she would be prone to.”

Marcus and his wife Tracy Giles wasted little time in getting pregnant again. “It was an easy decision to have another kid right away,” Marcus explained. “We both enjoy kids a lot, and we knew that’s what we wanted.” As for the three healthy daughters who have arrived since Lundyn’s death — Arrington Mae, Sawyur Rae, and Tatum Kane — Marcus reveals,

“We tell them they have an older sister in heaven.”

I am sorry for their loss. It is sweet that they remember their daughter & keep her memory alive by letting their younger daughters know that they have an older sister in heaven.

I feel so bad for them. It must be a heartbreaking situation. I love that they tell the other girls they have an older sister in heaven. I also have to comment on what awesome names all four of them have!!

My heart goes out to them. I lost my first daughter at 6 months, I had miscarriage with my son at 6 1/2 months and I have a beautiful 13 yr old. I told my daughter about her sister, we have pictures, I still have her brush, comb, my aunt made me a memory book. It’s heartbreaking to lose a child.

I just lost my second child two weeks ago. My son was 2 days old, he passed away from complications surrounding a congential heart defect. It is the most heartbreaking, painful thing and I feel the deepest sympathy for any parent who has to experience it. My prayers are with the Giles family as well as the other CBB reader who posted about her own loss.

I had the pleasure of umpiring Marcus Giles from Pony league through high school. I also umpired Brian when he was in school also. I know his mom and dad really well. I feel really sad about the loss of their first child, but am overjoyed by the fact that they now have 3 healthy kids. I am also sad that Marcus was cut by the Phillies. I hope he lands with another team this season.

I just ran into Marcus tonight at Subway and I noticed the tattoo on his arm but did not know the true meaning behind it(the GPS coordinates are actually encased within two small footprints)…now that I know, it means so much more and I can only imagine the sad constant reminder he must go through seeing it everyday.

on a side note, hes not playing baseball anymore and is enjoying life without the rigors of the game.
