Hexbugs: Let The Infestation Begin

Hexbugs ($10-20) are “micro robotic creatures” that respond to sound, lights and objects in their path. Their little legs move and they skitter around until they run into something with their delicate, wire antennae, then they back away, make a turn and try again. These aren’t really for the little kids, but my 3 1/2-year-old son and my “mostly golden retriever” love them. The crab even hides from a flashlight beam in a dark room and races away to a dark hidey hole. While they remind me of the cockroaches we had in my college dorm, the “creepy factor” is really minimal. They’re intriguing little creatures that are surprisingly smart.

I’ll be honest – - – we loved these too! My 3.5 year old son thought it was the next best thing to having a new pet. Sadly, we’ve gone through 2 of them already. It seems that their antenae are soooo delicate, that if they are pulled or tugged in the slightest, the bug loses function. We’ve never managed to keep one working more than 3 days.

I got these for my husband at Christmas this year, because they were on sale for only $5. They are so neat!! I love the way our little blue cock roach scurries across the floor, bumps into something, turns around and heads the other direction. Its too cool.
