Gwen Stefani Dishes On Zuma's 'Quirky' Name

Ask Gwen Stefani what she’s been doing the last few years and her answer is an obvious one: “I’ve been making babies!” In a new interview with Detroit’s Mojo in the Morning, the mom of two says that her laid-back lifestyle since completing her last tour is about to head down a new path as she and her husband, singer Gavin Rossdale each gear up for their world tours.

Coincidentally the same age as his older brother when he traveled the world during Gwen’s Sweet Escape tour, 6-month-old Zuma Nesta Rock will be along for the ride and the proud mama is worry-free when it comes to her “sweet, chunky” baby boy. However, the same does not ring true for 2 ½-year-old Kingston James McGregor! “King has [a] really big opinion about what we do, so we’ll figure it out,” she shares. “We’ll pretty much be going to all the zoos and different places on our days off.” Although thrilled to take her boys with her, Gwen laughs that sometimes she finds herself longing for the old days!

“Some days I miss the old selfish touring days where you just sleep all day, but those days are gone. I just need to accept it!”

Planning the tour “on a whim” following being “cooped up” during her pregnancy, Gwen admits that she is yet to gain back her body before baby. Having gained “definitely way more than with Kingston,” the 39-year-old says that shedding the pounds has been “a million times harder” the second time around. “I had all these plans that I wasn’t going to get fat this time, but you don’t have control over it,” she explains. What’s Gwen’s secret to looking fabulous in the No Doubt promotional ads for the tour? Planning ahead!

“We shot that right when I got home [from my Sweet Escape tour] because I was like, ‘You know what, I’m going to get pregnant right now so you better take a picture of me. Capture this moment because I look good!”

Asked about her baby boy’s unusual moniker, Gwen references Zuma Beach, Calif., a location “really close to where we live.” Pressed further for an explanation, asking if Zuma was in fact conceived on the sandy shores, the songstress can’t help but laugh. “Yeah, we’re doing it on the public beach, dude. The paparazzi!”

According to Gwen, the idea actually came from fellow No Doubt member Tom Dumont, whose wife Mieke happened to be expecting a baby at the same time. In lieu of working on their record, Gwen laughs that the two were swapping name choices when the name Zuma popped up for Tom and Mieke. “I kind of stole it from him…I didn’t steal it, I mean his wife didn’t want it,” she says. “It was just one of those things that just happened. I just wanted [Zuma] to have a little bit of a quirky name.” (For the record, Tom and Mieke chose Rio Atticus for their second son, now 9 months.)

Someone actually had the nerve to ask if Zuma was conceived on the beach?! Poor Gwen!

Lisa on

Kingston and Zuma are adorable!!!!! I love this family!!!!! and I agree with you Stella Bella Somebody had the nerve to ask that!!!! I wasn’t so fond of the name Zuma but hey its not my baby, but the name has def. grown on me!It’s so nice that Gwen and Gavin but the kids first like all parents should do!! Instead of sleeping bringing the boys to the zoo is just a nice thing to do!

Janey on

Kingston seems like a little rama queen aka drama queen. I know i’m only going off pictures but zuma really does seem like a chill baby.

Jane on

Zuma is not my type of name but it’s ok for a rock star celeb baby. Zuma is a cutie like his brother.

Andreza & Teru on

Zuma is beautifull, like mama ;-)

Jessica on

Cute interview but I would get mad if someone asked me if I concieved my baby on a beach.

I could not be a celebrity.

Nicole on

You can tell Zuma is a chill baby. In every picture he’s just relaxed and mellow. Kingston is a madman you can tell. I guess its the terrible twos.

aimy on

Say what you want, but I like the name Zuma!

dee on

I have a 57 year old aunt named Rio (not a nickname). So Rio isn;t that weird to me.

FC on

I don’t mind Zuma. I thought it was weird at first, but it’s grown on me, and hey, he needs a rockin’/Marley/Jamaica influence name like his big brother.

And Rio isn’t bad. I just don’t know about Atticus, lmao.

Ryo on

I think Zuma name will be like Kingston – cute enough to carry off an unusual name! I have to admit though that I like Kingston’s much better.

I think it’s cute that Gwen calls him King. King and Baby Zooms – adorable.

Ryo on

*whoops, meant to write “I think Zuma will be like Kingston.”

Stella Bella- I agree! I think some questions are just too personal to ask, and where you concieved your baby is definently one of them!

nimbusi on

i don’t think that zuma is quirky at all, at least compared to apple, pilot, audio and so on..

I Love Gwen Family☆

Zuma is so cute!
Still not a fan of his name. Then again, I don’t even like Kingston.

cute :)

Just when I thought Kingston was the cutest possible child ever…. along came Zooms! Ah in that pic he is just too PRECIOUS!!

Pen on

Not a fan of Zuma. Also I wonder if the Zuma’s mother was someone else besides the well liked Stefani, would most people still think its cute? Seemingly people respond better to weird names (yes, it is weird) when its a celeb they like as oppose to one they dislike. Stefani, Jolie (amongst others) could call their kid “Diapers” and people would still find it cute!

When I heard the name Zuma Nesta Rock my first thought was “wtf?!”, but when I saw him I couldn’t imagine him with another name, cause he really looks like a little Zuma :D

Islandchick1039 on

zuma looks exactly like kingston..sans the hair…cute kids..can’t wait to see him express himself in his clothing…lol

camille on

zuma is just adorable and i love his name. at first it didn’t like much it, but the name has grown a lot on me and i love it! love to gwen and all her family, they’re all gorgeous!

Kerri on

Zuma has really grown on me…I first heard the name and wasn’t too big of a fan. But it really seems to suit the little guy! He is just absolutely adorable. Gwen and Gavin have 2 gorgeous boys.

Elena on

Cute child, terrible name. Gwen should have taken a hint when Mieke didn’t want it for her child. I don’t like Rio Atticus either, but it’s much better than Zuma.

CelebBabyLover on

Pen- I don’t think Angelina is the best example of a celeb who has chosen unusual names. Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne aren’t exactly your every day names, but they’re also much more “normal” than Peanut, Audio Science, Moon Unit, Pilot, Pirate, etc. And for the record, I would NOT find it cute if a celeb named their child “diapers”!

Oh, and can someone please tell me what’s really so bad about the name Zuma? I have never been able to understand why people have such a problem with the name Zuma!

Silvermouse on

I like both Zuma Nesta and Rio Atticus. Atticus reminds me of “To Kill a Mockingbird”. I agree with CelebBabyLover, Zuma makes me feel like that would be a chill baby and in the future, a chill teenager/man. And at first I hated Kingston, but now it has REALLY grown on me. . . her family is so adorable. Always brightens my day :-)

m-dot on

I think Zuma is one of the cutest babies! He looks just like mommy. I also think you should name your child what you care to. It’s a matter of culture, age, career, and just all around perspective.

Mary-Helen on

I didn’t like it when I first heard it, but it’s kind of quirky now, but not too weird. It’s grown on me.

CelebBabyLover on

m-dot- Very good point about it being a matter of culture and such. I remember that, when Lisa Bonet gave birth to her son a few months ago, a lot of people at first thought his name was weird. However, other commentors pointed out that it’s actually a perfectly normal name for a child of Hawiian origin, like Lisa’s baby.

Mia on

Zuma is really all mommy. The only thing I see of Gavin’s is the mouth, and maybe his nose, everything else is Gwen.

Veli on

baby boy is gorgeous…I love Zuma Nesta Rock..if I had a boy or maybe a dog I would consider Zuma…

D on

I love this fam and I love Gwen’s boys names. Honestly, a name is the parent’s choice, you may not think the name is your cup of tea but their parents did. Personally I love all of these quirky names, beats BOB in my book ;).

Josie on

I freakin LOVE Gwen Stefani… those two boys are the cutest, and I love how laid back and devoted Gwen and Gavin are. The boys’ names wouldn’t fit in any other family, but they work for them. :) SO SO happy that ND is back together and going to tour! I’m there, wherever the closest concert to me will be!
