Skip Hop City Chic Diaper Tote: Pretty and Practical

03/10/2009 at 11:45 AM ET

Staring into my closet at the four diaper bags I’ve accumulated so far I realized I was in a rut. Each bag was in basic black. Sure they’re functional, but I started to crave something a little more feminine. My pre-mom self was always draped in decadent rainbow-hued fabrics and charming prints. Even the shoes I wore every day — from ruby flats to purple peep toes — were colorful. With spring getting closer every day, I decided it was high time I rediscovered color. But I also needed a bag that could go the distance with tons of features. And with a sophisticated colorful look paired with plenty of extras, Skip Hop’s City Chic Diaper Tote ($150) in Park Avenue Tulip Pink was just what I needed.

The gorgeous chocolate, pink and ivory canvas fabric is laminated to wipe clean (which proved useful after a near-fatal latte incident). There are two side bottle pockets that are large enough to easily fit bottles, sippy cups and even my large CamelBak water bottle. Another outside pocket at the back of the bag holds the cushioned changing pad. It’s not the largest pad, but it was big enough to cover my 11 month-old from head to bottom. The pocket can also store my Skip Hop Pronto Changing Wallet for a more luxurious diaper-changing experience.

Inside you’ll find six more pockets to hold diapers, toys, pacifiers, snacks and other random bits. The interior of the bag was roomy enough to store everything I needed for my twins for an entire afternoon’s adventure. And that’s saying a lot. And, although it doesn’t work on my doublewide stroller, it easily attaches to a single stroller with ingenious little clips that live inside the bag.

But though all of these perks are definite pluses, the stand out feature for me is the detachable clutch (with removable strap). Clipped to the front of the bag, the clutch has credit card slots, a zippered large pocket and a small cell phone-sized pocket. The outside of the clutch has an additional zippered pocket perfect for loose change. It’s not big enough to replace my normal-sized purse, but it easily holds my wallet, phone, keys and lip gloss. So I can keep all of my stuff separate from the kids’ stuff inside the main bag. The best part is that I easily unclip it when I need to walk away from the stroller for a moment. And so with spring on its way I’m ready to step out with my colorful new bag. In fact I think I have a pretty little pair of pink and cream ballet flats that will go perfectly…
