PlasmaCar: A Quiet Ride-On Toy Everyone Will Love

We recently tested out the PlasmaCar ($70) with our almost 3-year-old twins. Overall, it’s a great addition to what can sometimes be a sickening sea of colored noise-making plastic toys that otherwise inhabit the homes of most toddlers these days.  Read More

Salma Hayek Nurses Another Woman's Baby on Nightline

Flynet

Many of you responded positively to last week’s story about Salma Hayek nursing a hungry baby during her UNICEF trip to Sierra Leone, after finding that his mother could not produce milk. Having her experience filmed for ABC’s Nightline, Salma explained that — because of malnutrition — doctors in the country encourage mothers to breastfeed for two years, but this rarely occurs. The reason? Men urge their wives to cease nursing rather quickly because of a cultural taboo against sexual intercourse with breastfeeding women.

“It is the best thing you can do for your child, not only the bonding, that’s how you build the immune system, so in a country like [Sierra Leone] imagine how important it is for the mothers to do that,” Salma says. “But here, there is the belief that if you are breastfeeding you cannot have a sexual life so the husbands, of course, of these women are really encouraging them to stop and this is just a taboo.”

Her decision to assist one of these women by nursing her hungry baby boy hit home for Salma, 42, as she wondered if it was fair to daughter Valentina Paloma, 16 months. She shares,

“That was amazing. I’m in Africa, in Sierra Leone, and I was able to feed an ill baby that was very hungry. I thought about it — am I being disloyal to my child by giving her milk away? And I actually think that my baby would be very proud to be able to share her milk. When she grows up I’m going to make sure that she continues to be a generous, caring person, and I think that’s the best thing I can give her as a mother.”

What Salma did is called “cross-nursing.” Bettina Forbes, CLC, of the Best for Babes Foundation says, “cross-nursing has been critical to the survival of the human species and is more common today than people might think.” Andi Silverman, author of Mama Knows Breast: A Beginner’s Guide to Breastfeeding adds,”some moms do it, but there’s no way to know how many. And La Leche League actually discourages cross-nursing and wet nursing because the person feeding your baby could have a communicable disease.”

Natascha McElhone Says New Baby Makes Life Manageable

Goff/INF

Natascha McElhone never envisioned herself as a single mom of three, but the 37-year-old actress has proved she’s up to the challenge. “Everyone’s been saying, ‘I don’t know how you can manage on your own, with the baby,’ but it’s because of that in a funny way, it’s been manageable,” she explains. “You can’t hole up and not get out of bed.”

Had she opted for the latter, it would have been understandable. Natascha’s husband Martin Kelly died last May while she was three months pregnant with their third child, 3 ½-month-old Rex; While at first the thought of having another baby “was a devastating idea,” Natascha says Rex has been “a source of constant joy” for both her and her two older sons Theodore, 8 and Otis, 5 ½. “He’s so, I dunno. Just a funny little … Yeah, you are,” she coos into Rex’s stroller. “I think he just knows he has to switch it on because in our house there’s so much competition for my attention.”

“He has to be supersonically radiating to get noticed, don’t you? He has no idea that he has no dad. I guess when he goes to school he will. But I’ll cross that bridge when it happens.”

Theodore and Otis “talk about Martin all the time,” Natascha says, “and he’s very much still a figure in our lives, obviously.” Theo in particular likes to make jokes about his late father, howling with laughter as he asks Natascha, “‘Do you remember when he …?” “But then afterwards, occasionally, he might go, ‘Oh. I really miss him,’” she shares.

Honor Warren Gets a New Bathtub!

It looks like Honor Marie Warren is graduating to a big girl bath! Jessica Alba, Cash Warren and Honor were seen leaving Toys R Us the other day with Safety 1st’s Tubside Bath Seat ($33).

With an adjustable arm clamp that “locks” onto the side of your tub, it provides stability for baby and a padded, rotating elbow rest for mom. It’s a great option for babies who no longer fit in the reclining infant tub, want to sit up during the bath but are still too young and wobbly.

Jeff Gordon and Ella's Magic Carpet Ride

Looks like mom and dad might be enjoying Disney more than little Ella Sofia! Four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and three-time Daytona 500 winner Jeff Gordon and wife Ingrid took their 19-month-old daughter for a spin on the Magic Carpets of Aladdin attraction at the Magic Kingdom in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. on Monday, but the toddler didn’t know what to think! On his website, Jeff shares that Ella had a good time after all. He said,

“I keep asking her ‘Are you having fun?’ and she keeps shaking her head yes. In the car on the way here, she wouldn’t stop talking and saying all kind of noises, and she was excited as can be, because she knew we were doing something we don’t normally do. I know she’s having a lot of fun.”

Chris Evans Welcomes Son Noah Nicholas Martin

Dave M. Bennett/Getty

BBC’s Radio 2 D.J. Chris Evans and his wife, professional golfer Natasha Shishmanian, are new parents after welcoming son Noah Nicholas Martin Evans at 8:21 a.m. on Tuesday, February 10th. Chris shares that his wife was admitted to the hospital on Monday night but “then immediately declared that we go out for one last pre-Noah meal even though she happened to be in labor at the time.”

The couple “laughed all the way through our dinner, what a way to kill the pain and suspense of labor — highly recommended. We arrived back at the hospital around eleven, both had a couple of hours kip and then the big boy contractions kicked in.” Noah did decide to give his parents a little bit of a scare during his birth though.

“There was a bit of a twist, in his case, his umbilical chord wrapped not once but twice around his neck, poor little fella, so mum did most of the pushing and then towards the end enjoyed a wee bit of help from a very nice man called Pat. I think I may love him, I know Tash definitely does.”

Everyone is reported to be doing well, although Chris, 42, pointed out that Noah “so far, is the only one of the three of us, not to have cried. I know everyone says that about their own but he really is a bit special.”

The pregnancy was announced by Chris in July. This is Chris’ second child, he is also dad to 22-year-old Jade.
