Racing, Not Family, on Jeff Gordon's Mind As the Engine Starts

Garth Vaughan/Walt Disney World

In 2008, NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon finished the season winless for the first time since 1993, leaving some to wonder if fatherhood to daughter Ella Sofia may have lessened his edge! However, that couldn’t be further from the truth, Jeff explains. “I might sound like a terrible father for saying this, but when I start the engine and put the helmet on, I’m not thinking a lot about family at that time,” shares the 37-year-old. Still, he admits Ella, 19 ½ months, did play a small role in his performance — or lack of — last season.

“At Texas last spring, our worst race we had, we’re like, ‘Okay, she’s sleeping through the night.’ We’ll bring her with us to the track, and she was up all night. I knew my car was not where I wanted it to be, and I knew Texas was a challenge to me already, and I had the worst day I could ever imagine because I didn’t get any sleep.”

To avoid having that situation occur again, Jeff has adjusted his sleeping patterns to closely match those of his daughter’s. We’ll have to wait and see if that makes a difference however — this season Jeff finished 12th in the first points race of the season.

Jeff, 37, is married to model Ingrid Vandebosch.

Naomi Watts Zeroes in on Sasha and Sammy

Fame

In her new film The International actress Naomi Watts, 40, portrays a mother and prosecutor caught up in a world of intrigue and danger as she works to bring a corrupt bank to justice. At least one aspect of the role was familiar territory! Mom to Alexander ‘Sasha’ Pete, 18 ½-months, and Samuel ‘Sammy’ Kai, 9-weeks, Naomi says that the “constant struggle” and “balancing act” of working motherhood is something she hopes film-goers will identify with, as well. “I feel like I’m spreading myself thin in both arenas,” she admits.

“Usually, I’m so there for my work and there is nothing that will get in the way of it, I’m just 100% there. But now, with my children, I mean if they’re in the room, it’s like nothing else exists.”

The International is actually the first film Naomi made after welcoming Sasha, and the shoot was challenging as a result. “It felt impossible because I knew the scope of the film,” she explains. “I knew there was shooting in several countries.” Director Tom Tykwer went out of his way to accommodate the new mom, however, ultimately condensing the overseas shoot into five-weeks. ”And that’s when I said, ‘OK, maybe I can do this,’” Naomi says.

“We had spent two months in Lithuania shooting … well, Liev was shooting, so we were there on his set and then we all moved to Berlin and shot there. So the family was able to stay together, so that was good.”

Sasha and Sammy are Naomi’s children with fiancé Liev Schreiber. The International is in theaters now.

Jerry O'Connell Says No Reality Shows For Twin Daughters

When he allows himself to imagine what his 7-week-old fraternal twin daughters Dolly Rebecca Rose and Charlie Tamara Tulip will someday grow up to be, Jerry O’Connell is setting the bar low — really, really low! “Most people are like, ‘My kids are going to the Ivy Leagues, my kids are going to be doctors,’” the 34-year-old actor noted during a Friday appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. ”Well my kids aren’t going anywhere near vH1 reality shows.”

“That is my goal in life, is to keep my daughters off vH1 reality shows; I just don’t want my daughters vying for Flava Flav‘s love.”

The potential for such a scenario was first raised while Jerry’s wife Rebecca Romijn was still pregnant with the twins. The couple began telling friends and family of their intent to name one of the girls Dolly and they were met with resistance! “People said, ‘Oh no, no, don’t do that. I know a Dolly; She’s on that vH1 reality show with Bret Michaels. You don’t want to do that!’” Jerry recalled. As for Charlie, the couple managed to pay homage to both Jerry’s brother and Jerry’s youth in one fell swoop.

“I’m from the 70′s, and I don’t know if you remember the perfume ‘Charlie’ with, like, the independent women walking around in pantsuits? I just remember those commercials, so I was like, ‘Yeah, like my daughters are gonna be independent women! And walk to work with briefcases and pantsuits! And they don’t need boyfriends!”

The girls drink from Wee*go glass bottles – Dolly uses pink and Charlie uses yellow.

Julia Roberts Is The 'Luckiest Girl in Town'

Courtesy Allure

In the March issue of Allure magazine Julia Roberts reveals that the key to beauty is “always to be looking at someone who loves you;” It that’s true, it’s no wonder the 41-year-old stay-at-home mom to 20-month-old Henry Daniel and 4-year-old twins Hazel Patricia and Phinnaeus ‘Finn’ Walter is known as one of the most beautiful women in the world! “I’m the luckiest girl in town, I really am,” she admits.

When it comes to teaching their three children the virtues of love and compassion, however, the Pretty Woman star says that she and husband Danny Moder set the tone — with each other. “One of my favorite things about my children right now, even Henry, who can’t say all the words…sometimes he’ll see me and go, ‘Ma-ma!’ and throw himself on me….Or Finn says he likes my earrings….Or Hazel will say, ‘You look pretty, Mama,’ first thing in the morning,” she says. “And I realize, that’s all my husband.”

“They’re seeing the things that he does and the way that he shares his feelings with me, and the way that I share my feelings with him. The coolest thing you can do for your children is to love each other in their presence.”

Taking time off from her career to focus all her efforts on the children is something many moms can relate to, and Julia says that she — in turn — can now relate to the monotony that sometimes befalls stay-at-home moms. “A lot of the mom struggle in life is that everything happens within the four walls of the home, and it can lose its luster a little bit, maybe,” she says, having taken two years off after welcoming the twins. “You just have to bring it in from the outside sometimes.” One way Julia confesses she’d love to do just that is with a much sought-after playdate with Malia and Sasha Obama! “The girls can play with my kids,” she jokes.

All that time spent in close quarters with three small children has made Julia a triage nurse, of sorts. “We get a lot of splinters in our house,” she admits. When the time comes to undo what has been done, Julia’s approach can best be surmised as “distraction and extraction.”

“A splinter is just a good light, a pair of tweezers and a lot of singing songs and passing the time: La-la-la, now listen, if you eat all of your dinner…”

Julia says that she and Danny often find themselves wondering how they ever filled the hours before they became parents. “‘What did we do with all the time we must have had?’” she asks. “Because you don’t recognize it as such, until you have all these little … time thieves running around your house.” She adds,

“I will never be bored again.”

Julia’s new film Duplicity opens March 20th.
