What We're Watching

Here are the DVDs that have been in rotation at our house over the last few weeks:

  • Strawberry Shortcake Happily Ever After – For girls who love fairy tales and Strawberry Shortcake, what more could you ask for in a DVD? Happily Ever After puts a strawberry twist on the classic Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel tales.
  • Space Buddies – In this third “Buddies” flick (Air Buddies and Snow Buddies came first), five adorable puppies stow aboard an unmanned mission to the moon. Cute premise, cute dogs with dumb stereotypical personalities (girl dog wears a bow and loves clothes, fat dog loves to eat, etc.) but Anya likes it. That’s all I’ll say.
  • Care Bears Care a Lot Collection and Oopsy Does It- Fans of the classic Care Bears may appreciated the Care a Lot Collection but be prepared for really terrible production quality in addition to the cornball scripts. The more recent Oopsy Does It is computer-generated so it has a totally different look and feel. To be honest, these are the DVDs I want to lose but Anya keeps asking for them.
  • The Penguins of Madagascar – Sold only in the Move It! Move It! Double Pack of  Madagascar Back 2 Africa, this DVD features two episodes from the upcoming Nickelodeon series. The penguins were my favorite part of Madagascar so I like seeing them as the stars and Anya likes penguins.
  • Cinderella III: A Twist in Time – I’d like to take this opportunity to embarrass my husband by sharing that he readily admits that this second Cinderella sequel is “not bad.” The stepmother and stepsisters steal the Fairy Godmother’s wand, reverse time and make the shoe fit stepsister Anastasia instead of Cinderella.

The Trio Fire Station ($25) also includes an action panel to set the scene and moving parts like the opening door, fire bell, fire pole and a figure.

Maggie Gyllenhaal Brings Ramona to Work!

Splash News Online

It’s bring your daughter to work day! Maggie Gyllenhaal totes 2-year-old Ramona on Saturday as she makes her way to the theater for that afternoon’s performance of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, which she’s starring in with fiancé Peter Sarsgaard.

Although the pair try to split their parenting duties, Maggie admits that Ramona is currently in a mama’s girl phase!

“In our case, maybe it’s because I have a daughter, the mom is the mom. There is something about that. But we try. When we’re together — if we’ve been away from her a lot — she just wants to be with me. That’s kinda how she is at the moment.”

Uncle Vanya runs through March 8th at the Classic Stage Company in New York City.

Toy Fair 2009: Fisher-Price Adds to Its Get Up, Get Smart and Get Going Line

Fisher-Price Smart Fit Park

Fisher-Price’s Get Up, Get Smart, and Get Going line encourages toddlers play actively when they play indoors. The introduction of two new products and an updated one in June will encourage kids to get off the floor and on their feet!

Smart Fit Park ($40) is a learning mat that plugs directly into your TV (no game system required!) that will get your kids walking, running, jumping and stomping as they interact. In the 18 games and races that incorporate letters, numbers, shapes and colors, kids can control the on-screen action – the faster they run, the faster their character will move on the screen; when they jump on the mat, the character on the screen jumps as well!

3-in-1 Smart Sports ($65) is a Wii-like wireless sports game that also connects directly to your TV. Kids can play a total of nine learning games incorporating the three attachments – a baseball bat, tennis racket and golf club.

The Smart Cycle Extreme ($100) is an update of last year’s Smart Cycle. This version includes rumble-action and has a new look. Six new games ($25 each) with rumble-action will also be available – Pixar Cars, Toy Story, Hot Wheels, Sponge Bob, Bob the Builder and Planet Heroes.

Alyson Hannigan Gets a Grip

Kevin Perkins/Pacific Coast News

Out walking in Brentwood on Saturday, Alyson Hannigan stays close to husband Alexis Denisof by looping arms as they stroll back to their car.

The pair, who met on the set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, expect their first child in early April.

Although Alyson, 34, knows the sex of the baby, she’s decided to stay mum until the birth. Guess we have a bit longer to wait!

She currently stars on How I Met Your Mother, airing Monday nights at 8:30 p.m. on CBS.
