Naomi Watts: Returning to Work After Sasha Was 'A Struggle'

02/15/2009 at 02:00 PM ET

As she continues to make the rounds in support of her latest film, during a Friday appearance on CBS’ The Early Show Naomi Watts couldn’t help but reflect on what a whirlwind her life has been over the last several years. With two baby boys — 18 ½-month-old Alexander ‘Sasha’ Pete and 9-week-old Samuel ‘Sammy’ Kai — a fiancé in actor Liev Schreiber and a burgeoning career, the 40-year-old actress says that The International holds a special significance for her. “This is the only movie I’ve done since I’ve been a mother,” she noted; In a separate interview with MoviesOnline.ca, Naomi revealed that — as a result — the shoot “was a struggle.” She elaborated,

“You don’t have the foresight particularly the first time around to know how difficult it will be until you’re there. In fact, I was still nursing my baby at that point and we were shooting at night in the freezing cold and I wasn’t going to have him in the trailer on the set, so I would be expressing milk and sending it back to the hotel and then having to feed him all day the next day when I should be sleeping. So it was hard, it was definitely a challenge.”

After the success of Mulholland Drive in 2001 Naomi admits she took full advantage of the myriad roles which were offered to her, but she was left feeling “burned out” after King Kong in 2005. She then took a well-deserved break, which proved to be well-timed, indeed! “I needed a bit of a rest, and then I met Liev… and then the babies started coming,” she said. Going forward, Naomi admits that the roles she accepts will most definitely be influenced by her new role as a mom, though probably not creatively. “I think my tastes will always remain the same,” she said. “I’m not going to just suddenly start doing kiddie-friendly films.” With that said, Naomi adds,

“My taste is my taste. But my choices will always be affected by things like when does this shoot, how long for, is the family able to come along, whose turn is it, and stuff like that.”

The International is in theaters now.

Naomi was terrific in The Painted Veil. I heard that Edward Norton (the leading man🙂 really fought to get that movie made and I was so glad. It was a wonderful flick, I highly recommend! Liev is in it too.
