PlasmaCar: A Quiet Ride-On Toy Everyone Will Love

02/11/2009 at 11:00 AM ET

We recently tested out the PlasmaCar ($70) with our almost 3-year-old twins. Overall, it’s a great addition to what can sometimes be a sickening sea of colored noise-making plastic toys that otherwise inhabit the homes of most toddlers these days.

Instead, it works by harnessing the natural kinetic energy that a person creates when sitting and steering the PlasmaCar. I had initial concerns that the youngsters would have a hard time learning the specific way that you have to steer to get the car to go, but those worries were quickly put to rest as my son went zooming from our living room to our dining room and then also quickly figured out turning around and going backwards. In fact, his mastery of the skill was kind of impressive. It does require an art to the manipulation of the steering wheel to get it to go how you want it to (especially on a flat surface indoors) and it was nice to see the skill being developed and the thinking skills required to evaluate how you could move it differently to achieve different results.

The assembly was not difficult, and was completed by my husband in roughly 10 short minutes with minimal tools necessary. The Internet rumors that it can scratch hardwood floors appear to be unfounded. I suspect that if you use the toy outside and the wheels become rough and uneven, perhaps that would eliminate its indoor use. For now, we’ll use it indoors in the cold weather and take it outside for good when spring comes.

Additionally, it holds up to 220 pounds on a flat surface (or so the product claims… neither my husband or I top out anywhere near that, so unfortunately this claim was nowhere near tested). And I have to say, while I have no desire to sit on my children’s blinking-light, music-playing toddler school bus, I’ve already logged quite a bit of time on the PlasmaCar, and I think it’s enjoyable to see “mommy” whirling around in child-like glee as well.

Overall, definitely recommended, and a great option for a gift!

The plasma car is seriously the best toy ever! It entertains my 1,3, and 10 yr olds daily, and they all absolutely love it.
I even find myself riding it and thinking how much fun it is!
It doesn’t take much room to ride it around, all we have is around our couch and dining table area.
I paid full retail for ours, but I would check, I saw after Christmas they had them much cheaper.
This is the perfect gift!

This is great toy! It even holds adults, and it’s very stafe for the little ones, too.

My 3 year old son, 3 year old niece and 5 1/2 year old niece all received one for Christmas and have put them to very good use.
A hit with the children and parents.

Dang, that makes the wooden “car” I had as a kid pale in comparison! Hehe.

I’m not sure who has more fun with this toy – our son or us adults!!

My mother told my (then) 1 year old that he could pick out something in a toy store we stopped by to browse through. Well, he parked himself on one of these cars and tried to scoot around the store on it.

Now, at 2½ years old, he can whip around our house at lightning speed and gets the greatest glee out of it. My husband and I will also take turns riding the car and sometimes put our lil man on our laps while taking a spin around. D will use either the handle to make it move or will just use his feet to get going. Either way, he can really zoom!

Ours is a strictly indoor-only toy. We’re afraid of the wheels being scuffed so badly outside that they’ll scratch and damage our wood and laminate floors inside. I am contemplating getting a second one for just outside or buying a second set of wheels to change out when we go outdoors.

You can’t go wrong with this toy. The fact that you can buy replacement pieces and parts is great. Plus, it’s a toy they can’t really outgrow since it holds an average sized adult!

We paid full retail and it was worth EVERY last penny.
