Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry Hope to Expand Family

She may be their only child for now, but Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry‘s daughter, Nahla Ariela, will be getting a brother or sister – if the proud papa gets his way.

“She needs a sibling,” Gabriel told PEOPLE at Monday’s Callaway Golf Foundation Challenge at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., to benefit the Entertainment Industry Foundation. “I think it’s important. I’ve never known anybody who’s had a single child [and] I’ve always been around big families,” adds the model, who comes from a family of eight children. “I believe in big families.”

And what does Halle, 42, think of his plans to expand the family? “She’s okay with it,” he says. “Absolutely.”

As for baby Nahla, 10 ½ months, Gabriel says the toddler is walking and talking, and even practicing a second language. “I don’t want to say [what her first words were] but it was probably ‘dada,’” he says. “She doesn’t say ‘dad.’ She says ‘papa,’ which is the French version of it.”

But to not hurt anyone’s feelings, jokes Gabriel, “Let’s just say she said, ‘mama.’”

That’s great that they will be giving her a sibling! Everybody should have a sibling if possible. I can’t imagine my life without my siblings and all the memories I would have missed out on and even now our respective families all get along great. Good for them!!

Their daughter is beautiful, and is all daddy, with the exception of Halle’s complexion/and the mouth. It would be great for them to have another one -girl/or boy- so Nahla has a sibling. Hope it happens for them

Thats great news. I love my two sisters and one brother. And love to remember waiting for the bathroom in the mornings. And my brother (who is closer to me in age)waking me up on Christmas morning to open gifts. My cousin who was an only child would got more for Christmas. But she never had any one to play with. Now every body who don’t think she’s already pregnant. Will be watching and waiting for a pregnancy. Good Luck!

Yea it would be great for them to have another baby. I can’t imagine my life without my brother, we are so close and get closer the older we get. I always said if people could it’s good to have at least 2 kids, so that they have a sibling to grow up with.

I hope they have another baby, Nahla is beautiful. I couldn’t imagine my life without my two older sisters, so many great memories and as we got older we developed into close friends. It’s a special bond.

Good luck to them. I see Halle is already 42 so better get cracking on the second kid considering she has diabetes and there’s health concerns the older she gets. Then again maybe she was smart when she was much younger and froze some eggs.

It’s great if they want to expand their family. However, raising one child is just as wonderful. Families come in different sizes. What’s best for one family may not be best for another. Plus, if she is unable to have another child due to age or other factors, she is blessed to have the daughter she has — a daughter that will have a terrific life with her parents and extended family and friends.

Gabriel is younger than Halle, and therefore needs to take the health risks/factors that could affect her pregnancy into consideration when trying for a 2nd child- I personally believe they should be content with Nahla and perhaps foster, adopt or whatever?

As an only child, whose mother was an only child, I agree with Gabriel. My cousin, also an only child and she married later in life, also rushed to have more than one. I know people who are only children who say how wonderful it is. I don’t agree and and glad my children have each other. Those of you who say how blessed you are to have siblings will understand. The only child syndrome is not always happy.

Being an only child is not as pathetic as some would believe. I loved every minute of it. I had plenty of friends to keep me company and felt lucky to have my parents to myself. Are there some days I wish I had a sibling? Sure. But most days I’m content with being an only. There are advantages to it, just like every other kind of family structure.

Why is everyone assuming Halle will get pregnant again? I remember her discussing adoption more than once before she got pregnant with Nahla. Therefore, maybe they’re thinking of adopting?

I am an only child (I loved it) and my daughter will be an only child too. Children don’t NEED siblings to have a happy life, it’s all in how you make it. I have a full and happy life and never felt I missed out on anything (especially my parents time and attention).

You should have a second child because you WANT a second child- not because you feel you are giving your first child a gift (they may or may not feel that way), or as a back up in case something happens to the first child.
