M.I.A. Guesses at Sex of First Child

Singer M.I.A., whose real name is Mathangi ‘Maya’ Arulpragasam, may not know the sex of the baby that she is expecting on February 8th, but not for a lack of trying! “I was really itching to find out and we just went, f–k it and called the doctor,” she explains. “But, because every time we went in there we said we don’t wanna know, it was never written down so he couldn’t tell us. That’s a sign.”

While the gender “doesn’t matter to me,” M.I.A. “think[s] I may have a boy, because I have a pointy stomach.” However, if she’s wrong and delivers a daughter, “she will be a tough girl,” the 31-year-old says. Planning for a midwife-accompanied waterbirth at her home, M.I.A. already has in mind the things that she will be teaching her child.

“I would teach my child tons of things. I want my child to see the third world countries, and be humble about what he or she has, and have sound judgment.”

This will be the first child for M.I.A. and her fiancé Ben Brewer, lead singer and guitarist of The Exit.
