Kate Hudson Dishes On Ryder's 'Old School' Birthday Party

On Wednesday Ryder Russell Robinson celebrated his fifth birthday after school with a Star Wars-themed birthday party, and mom Kate Hudson is hoping he’ll be a bit more hands-on with those gifts than he was with the gifts Santa brought him at Christmas! During a recent appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, the 29-year-old actress revealed that Ryder was so enamored with one present in particular, he still can’t bring himself to play with it — choosing instead to admire it from afar.

“He wanted this power tool station. For a year, he was like, ‘I want Santa to give me a power tool station.’ So Santa brought him the power tool station…And he hasn’t touched it! He just looks at it, like, ‘Wow. Power tool station.’ I’m like, ‘But Ryder, it does stuff! Look at the saw!’ And nothing. He just kind of stares at it like, ‘Cool.’”

Ryder initially had settled on a Bolt-themed birthday party before deciding to go “old school” with Star Wars, Kate said while walking the red carpet on Wednesday at the People’s Choice Awards. During a Monday appearance on Live with Regis and Kelly she marveled at how quickly the last five years have gone, noting that her son has even begun to show an interest in reading and writing. “He’s really actually getting good at it,” she explains. “And that’s when I went, ‘Oh, now the spelling things [trick] isn’t going to work anymore.”

Ryder is Kate’s son with ex-husband Chris Robinson; Her new film Bride Wars is in theatres now.

Bosco Bear Removable Wall Decals: Planes, Trains and Automobiles

We recently did a cross-country move and rented a house until we get the lay of the land, so hand painting my sons’ bedrooms is not an option this year. I can’t just let them sleep with four white walls, though. Fortunately Australian Bosco Bear Removable Wall Art (US$45-60) has darling designs that go up easily and peel off without marking the walls one bit. Read More

Jill Halfpenny Reclaims Her Pre-Pregnancy Jeans

Anthony Harvey/WireImage

When it comes to baby weight, ignorance was bliss for Jill Halfpenny. The 33-year-old English actress — mom to Harvey Reece, 8 months – says she didn’t sneak a peek at the scale the entire time she was pregnant with her son. “I’m presuming I put on a few stone,” Jill admits. “I’m at my pre-baby size now, a size 10, which I’m happy about.” She adds,

“As soon as I was back in my old clothes I felt myself again.”

Jill employed a slow and steady approach to weight loss while allowing nature to “take its course.” Even though she “didn’t eat stupidly” while pregnant, she notes that weight gain is “inevitable;” After waiting three months postpartum, she returned to diet and exercise — including lots of dance moves she learned on the UK’s Strictly Come Dancing. “I cut my portion sizes and made sure I wasn’t eating the wrong things,” she explains. “When you are working out you have a bit more respect for what you are eating anyway. You think, ‘I’ve just been to the gym for an hour, I don’t want to put that crap in my mouth.’”

Calling motherhood “brilliant,” an “incredibly experience” and “the best thing in … life, by a mile,” Jill’s thoughts on pregnancy are not quite as rosy! “Really bad morning sickness” was a “struggle,” she says, while Harvey’s labor and delivery proved to be “very long and painful.” The end result was well worth it, however. Adds Jill,

“My son’s just getting to an age now where he’s responding to what you do and laughing and smiling, and when they get to that age it’s so rewarding.”

Harvey is the first child for Jill and her husband Craig Conway.

Why Did I Get Married? star Jill Scott, 36, is pregnant with her first child. The three-time Grammy Award winner and actress made the announcement Friday while promoting HBO’s The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, which she filmed during her first trimester — in Botswana! “My doctors gave me a clean bill of health and said you can do this, so I did it,” she explains. Not that it was easy! Describing the experience as “one of the biggest challenges” of her life, Jill adds,

“First trimester! You’re sick every morning. It was seven hours time difference, the heat, the bugs, the 14 hour days.”

Baby-on-the-way is due April 25th, and will also be the first for Jill’s fiancé, drummer Lil’ John Roberts.

No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency airs in March.

Brooke Burke Makes Up for Lost Time With Shaya

INF

Have kids, will travel! Brooke Burke reveals in a new entry to Baboosh Baby that she and her brood recently moved their New Years party from the mountains to the beach, before returning home to California. “I just got home from the Bahamas with all the kids,” she writes. “It was an amazing trip, definitely more for them!”  Amazing indeed; Neriah, 8 ½, Sierra Sky, 6 ½, Heaven Rain, 2, and Shaya Braven, 10 months, spent time on a yacht, visited an aquarium, swam with dolphins and “played [for] endless hours on the beach,” Brooke says. The trip was especially needed in that it offered Brooke and Shaya a chance to reconnect after a hectic fall while Brooke participated on — and won! — the 7th season of Dancing With the Stars. She writes,

“He and I really bonded on this trip. I carried him close to me in his sling quite a bit, which made up for much missed time over the past few months.”

Maintaining her DWtS physique will be a priority in 2009, even if she was temporarily derailed by the holiday. Fortunately, 37-year-old Brooke has an ally in her oldest daughter. “I started my morning off right [when] Neriah and I shared an egg white, tomato, zucchini and mozzarella omelet, before I took her to school,” Brooke writes. “She loves to eat healthy with me.” In closing, Brooke again put out a call for help; She has been exploring “mommy sites” on the Internet, and is looking for recommendations for others.

Neriah and Sierra are Brooke’s children with ex-husband Dr. Garth Fisher; Rain and Shaya are her children with fiancé David Charvet.
