Cate Blanchett Calls Parenthood 'The Ultimate Expression of Hope'

INF

She’s observed previously that she and husband Andrew Upton make cute babies, and now Cate Blanchett again suggests that their family of five could continue to grow. When asked by the Times Online whether she’d like to try for a fourth child, Cate answered definitively “yes;” When asked if that decision is rooted in a desire to have a daughter, she was quick to clarify, “not necessarily, no.” The 39-year-old actress — already mom to sons Dashiell John, 7, Roman Robert, 4 ½ and Ignatius Martin, 9-months – adds,

“It’s the ultimate expression of hope, isn’t it, to have children.”

Her comments came in London, where she was promoting her new film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The children were asleep in a hotel suite upstairs, with Dashiell and Roman cuddled together in a big bed as Iggy snoozed in the bathroom. Life on the road would be a novelty to most children, but Cate says she keeps indulgences like room service to a minimum. “Look, you can’t be friends with your children,” she explains. “On a film set, they can be so indulged, you need to draw the line.” To that end, Cate says that she’s been careful to only accept roles that will pose the least disruption to her family as a whole. “The release of a film has a lot of travel demands, and there’s a practical concern with children: where is it being shot, how long am I going to be away for, will it work with the children’s holidays,” she says. Asked whether she’s a good mom, Cate replies,

“I’m incredible. They love me so much, they kneel by their beds every night.”

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is in theaters now.

Tom Cruise Fights to Keep Suri in the Wings

NY Team/Most Wanted

Try as they might, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes can’t seem to keep their 2 ½-year-old daughter Suri from the spotlight. At no time was that more apparent than during a recent performance of Katie’s Broadway smash All My Sons. Tom — who has famously attended the show more than 20 times — was watching from the wings with Suri, when he noticed her tiny feet slowly making their way towards the stage. “I say, ‘Sweetheart, stay right here,’” the 46-year-old actor recalled during a Friday appearance on The View. “She turns to me and sort of taps my hand away, and I realize, she’s going to go on stage.”

“Everyone is acting! So then she [got down on hands and knees and] was going to crawl out on stage. At a certain point she’s crawling, and I’m holding on to her dress, just quietly, because I don’t want her to say anything too loud. And so I finally just picked her up and said, ‘You can’t go on stage.’ And she goes, ‘Why?’ [I should have said] ‘you can’t go on stage yet.’”

New Years Eve for Tom, Katie and Suri was spent quietly at home, and Christmas was “low-key,” he revealed. “It was more about the giving,” he explains. “We never really have the gifts be a big thing.” When asked about the public fascination with his youngest daughter — viewed by some as a fashion icon — Tom admitted that he is torn. “It’s both very flattering … and you kind of go, ‘It is what it is,’ he says. “We all think our children are incredible, and I feel that way about all three of my kids.” That was about as much information as Tom was allowed to divulge with regard to 16-year-old Isabella Jane and 13 ½-year-old Connor Antony, however!

“I’ve been given very strict instructions not to discuss their personal lives. The kids are to this point where they’re just like, ‘Dad, don’t talk about my life.’ [Bella]‘s a good girl…I feel lucky to have the teenagers, and Suri.”

Bella and Connor are Tom’s children with ex-wife Nicole Kidman. Valkyrie, Tom’s latest film, is in theaters now.

Mary-Louise Parker Always Wanted to Adopt

Neilson Barnard/Getty

Welcoming her now 5-year-old son William Atticus in 2004 was a “massive” moment for actress Mary-Louise Parker, but it in no way overshadowed the moment she welcomed 2-year-old daughter Caroline ‘Ash’ Aberash in 2007. The 44-year-old actress says her dreams of adopting a child were firmly established while she was still just a child, herself. “I remember being little and asking my parents if we could adopt,” Mary-Louise explains to Gotham magazine. “I just always was attracted to the idea, and I love what it says and I love what it means. “

“There are millions of children in this world, and I think if you have the energy and the resources, then it’s something you should really look into.”

William is Mary-Louise’s son with ex-boyfriend Billy Crudup.

Paparazzi Make it Harder for Isla Fisher to Protect Daughter

INF

Hollywood stars know that with increased recognition, they run the risk of becoming a target for the paparazzi, but for actress Isla Fisher, the issue has taken on a new meaning now that she is mom to 15-month-old daughter Olive. “With the paparazzi it’s really difficult,” the protective mom explains. “You make decisions during your day based on how much privacy you can get for your child, and when you’re protecting a tiny person from scary men swarming around them with massive black things in their face screaming their name, it takes on a whole new thing.”

Being cautious around photographers only seems natural for the 32-year-old, who believes Olive to be “by far my greatest accomplishment.” Olive’s dad, actor Sacha Baron Cohen, is the “love of my life,” notes Isla, but says the love that she has for her child is something that she never imagined.

“Love is an incredible gift if you’re lucky enough to receive it and give it. But then having a baby is another whole level of love.”

The Australian actress quickly shed her pregnancy weight after giving birth to Olive — but not with exercise. In fact, it was just the opposite. “You know that point where somebody working out starts to feel tired? Apparently, you get this second wind and you start to sweat, and that’s when you get addicted. But for me, that’s the point that I get off and have a cup of tea and a slice of cake,” laughed Isla.

Isla’s new movie, Confessions of a Shopaholic, is in theaters February 13th.
