Sam Mendes Says Fatherhood Sets Him Free

Steve Granitz/WireImage

In his mid-30s, director Sam Mendes, 43, lacked self-confidence, finding himself preoccupied by the thought of what others thought about him and his work. Wife Kate Winslet changed all that, however, he tells W magazine. “She said, ‘Don’t make such a fuss about what people think. Do you like it? Then do it!’” he explains. “Now I feel much freer.” Step-daughter Mia Honey, 8, and son Joe Alfie, 5, have only solidified his new-found sense of personal freedom. Adds Sam,

“That’s the thing about having a family. When you’ve got kids, you become so aware of how lucky you are. What’s the worst that can happen? You get bad reviews. So f–king what? And then you do another show.”

When it comes to paternal role models Sam notes that he doesn’t really have one, having been raised by a single mom after his parents divorced when he was three. When asked how Joe’s upbringing has differed from his own, Sam replies, “Well, I’m in the house, for one thing.” He adds,

“I love my father very much, but it wasn’t the relationship you have when you take your kid to school in the mornings and pick him up or put him to bed every night, as I do with my son. So it’s uncharted territory for me.”

Mia is Kate’s daughter from a previous marriage. Sam and Kate’s new film Revolutionary Road — their first together — is in select theaters now.

Brendan Fraser Tells Sons He 'Defeats Bad Guys' For a Living

INF

Telling OK! that fatherhood teaches him “how to love more and more every day,” Brendan Fraser says that his three sons are not exactly in love with dad’s profession – because they’re still not entirely sure what it is. Noting that Griffin Arthur, 6, Holden Fletcher, 4 and Leland Francis, 2 ½ are  still “very small,” Brendan explains,

“I tell them I’m going to work, and they say ‘What do you do, daddy?’ ‘Well, I defeat bad guys?’ ‘Wanna take one of my light sabers?’ [laughs] ‘You know, I want to go work with Han Solo.’ What?! Oh, by the way, I just got hired to work with Harrison Ford. Cool! Look at me, I’m turning into one of my kids. Don’t tell anyone!”

Brendan’s new film Inkheart , rated PG, is “age-appropriate” according to the 40-year-old actor, who adds “that’s a good thing.” ”I know a satisfying experience at the movies with your family is a positive experience,” he explains. “There are other films that I’ve made, and when those kids grow a little bit older, then I’ll show them that work or they’ll find it themselves. In the end, I don’t know an actor who idles very well, so I’m happy to keep my hands and feet busy.”

The boys are Brendan’s with estranged wife Afton Smith. Inkheart opens Jan. 23.

Alison Sweeney on Megan's Early Arrival

Courtesy Pregnancy

Alison Sweeney‘s doctor had warned her that second babies tend to come quicker, but she didn’t realize how true his words would be when she went into labor with daughter Megan Hope on January 12th. The Biggest Loser host was at work when labor struck and she “had to go right to the hospital after shooting a weigh-in” for the show. After arriving with no food in her stomach, the doctor thought things were moving slowly, telling the actress her daughter may not make her appearance until “4 or 5 a.m.”

With that thought in mind, Alison “sent my restless husband [Dave Sanov] off with his friend for a bite to eat. I certainly didn’t want them eating in front of me since I wasn’t allowed any food — which I didn’t know until it was too late. Take note! Eat beforehand!” However, that appeared to be the catalyst to kick start Alison’s labor into gear and “he couldn’t have been gone 10 minutes, my girlfriend and I were chatting away, and everything happened all at once” for Alison.

“Next thing I know, my friend is texting Dave — hurry back!! And the doctor is saying ‘Don’t do anything’ …  And once he returned, scrubbed in, it wasn’t more than 15 minutes later she was born. She did not want to be born on the 13th! Which apparently was a bet between Dave and his buddy.”

The Days of Our Lives star became a hit among the nurses in the hospital thanks to her day job. “One of the nurses looking after Megan was a long time Days fan,” blogged Alison, adding that the nurse “got such a kick out of telling me about how her colleagues were all doing double takes as they went to put out the latest issue of Pregnancy magazine in their waiting area, only to see their patient on the cover!”

“She brought me a copy — since I hadn’t seen it yet — and she was having such fun teasing them all for being star-struck. What timing right? That the mag would be released while I was in the hospital?”

Alison, 32, and Dave are also parents to son Benjamin Edward, 3 ½.

Simon Baker and Daughter Love Gossip Girl

Jason Merritt/Getty

Most people have a guilty pleasure and it turns out that actor Simon Baker and his 15-year-old daughter Stella Breeze share the same one — Gossip Girl! The star of CBS hit show The Mentalist explains that because his oldest works hard on her school work, the show is “the one thing she’s allowed to watch on a weeknight.” Simon says he “sit[s] in bed and watch[es] it with my daughter,” laughing about the over-the-top storylines. “It’s a guilty pleasure,” he admits. Don’t worry though — “We don’t use Gossip Girl as a reference point for our relationship. It’s just hard candy,” notes Simon.

The 39-year-old actor loves being a father to Stella and sons Claude Blue, 9, and Harry Friday, 7, and believes that the best part of being a dad is “just being involved in the experience.”

“I love having a family. Watching them grow and develop, share ideas and thoughts, is amazing.”

Simon is married to Australian actress Rebecca Rigg.
