Sound Off! How Do You Dress Your Children for Special Occasions?

With the inauguration of Barack Obama today, not only is the country (and the world) looking at the changes taking place in Washington, D.C., but the fashions, too! A parade of parties and events are happening in the nation’s capital today, and personally, we’re excited to see what Obama’s daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, will be wearing. Last week we offered some ideas for the girls’ outfits, and today we’ll find out if our predictions were correct.

Since Michelle Obama obviously had a hand in choosing her daughters’ outfits, we’re wondering, how do you dress your children on special occasions? Suits for boys, party dresses for girls? And in your family, what qualifies as a special occasion?

So here’s your chance to Sound Off! Tell us how you prepare your children for special occasions.

Rachel Griffiths Will Have a Propless Pregnancy

Steve Granitz/WireImage

Put away the stacks of books and baskets of fruit! Recently having announced her third pregnancy, Rachel Griffiths – who is “feeling great” – tells Us Weekly that despite the decision to not write in the pregnancy on her hit show Brothers & Sisters, there is little concern when it comes to hiding her growing belly. An expert on “brilliantly timed pregnancies” — including those of her two children Banjo Patrick, 5, and Adelaide Rose, 3 ½ – Rachel says that her growing family with husband Andrew Taylor has been planned without “causing the networks too much stress.” She explains,

“We’re almost done [with shooting] and I’m not enormous, so I don’t think there’ll be too much of that.”

Although her belly may be easy to hide on camera, the timing of her pregnancy confirmation was anything but coincidental. After raising eyebrows at the Golden Globes with her dress choice, Rachel — who tells PEOPLE she is “relieved I don’t have to suck my stomach in anymore” — realized that the time had come to share her big news.

“[I] was, like, hiding under that gold dress. I kinda wasn’t ready to announce it then, but it provoked so many questions I was like, ‘Alright, okay, let’s just not pretend anymore.’ And now I can’t suck it in anymore — it’s out.”

With the worries of working the pregnancy into the show washed away by the fortunate timing of the seasonal hiatus, Rachel admits that for the happy couple ”there is no blink of ‘Oh my god, what does this mean for us?’ It’s just, ‘we’re so happy.’” The happy feelings aside, as the July due date grows near, the 40-year-old actress can’t help but view her almost immediate return to work following the birth as “intimidating.” However, according to Rachel, even those fears are calmed by the exceptional cast and crew! “I’m in the most family-friendly show on television and everybody there is so supportive and thrilled.”

For Paul Bettany, the Best Defense is Offense

James Devaney/WireImage

With two school-aged children, Paul Bettany has officially entered the era of the bullies and the bullied. Unfortunately, his 11-year-old step-son Kai recently found himself a member of the latter camp — despite Paul’s best efforts. “You get taught how to be bullied, essentially, in England,” the 37-year-old actor says, when asked the difference between schools in the UK and schools in America. “I was so worried about it, I tried to teach my eldest how to punch the day before he went to school.”

“My wife [actress Jennifer Connelly] caught me, and she said ‘What are you doing? I said ‘I’m teaching him how to punch.’ ‘Why?’ Because he’s going to school, obviously!”

After Jennifer assured Paul that Kai — who is attending his mom’s alma mater — would be fine, and that in all her years there she never witnessed a single fight, Paul says his reaction was mixed. “I was filled with relief but also this sense of, ‘What are they teaching my kid at this school?’” he jokes. “If it’s not about fear and violence, what is it you are teaching?” When Kai reported back to Paul that he had, indeed, been bullied a “furious” Paul snapped into action, however!

“I drove him home. The next day I stopped outside the school in some weird stakeout; I said, ‘Point him out! Which one did it to you? He said ‘That one.’ But there were like a million kids out front. I said ‘Which one? The one with the long hair?’ He goes, ‘That one…the one with the cello.’ I said, ‘The one with the cello? You’re fine. Get out of the car.’”

Both Kai and his little brother Stellan, 5, are “bright kids” who are “really into astronomy,” Paul reveals – and one planet gives them the giggles like no other. ”It’s a privilege being a parent; there are many beautiful moments as you’re bringing your children up….seeing them born, seeing them take their first step, their first word, their first bike ride,” Paul explains. “The most moving moment so far has been when they discovered the planet Uranus.”

Kai is Jennifer’s son from a previous relationship. Paul’s new film Inkheart is in theaters Jan. 23.

Amanda Peet Strives to be a Positive Role Model

Limelight

Being a good role model is a job that many parents take seriously and actress Amanda Peet is no different. While it’s hard for her to balance motherhood to daughter Frances ‘Frankie’ Pen, 23 months, and her acting career, Amanda tries “to remember that it’s better for me to give her a model of striving for a career.” The 37-year-old tries “to be selective” about the roles that she takes and “obviously having a husband and a daughter makes it much easier, because it’s easy” to walk away from a role. Even though “there’s a huge incentive now to walk away from something,” Amanda notes, she also believes that now is the time to be working more.

“You know, as [Frankie] gets older, it’s only gonna get harder. So I feel like now is sort of the time, while she’s kind of not mobile, and she’s not in school yet, and she’s not super-attached to anybody else yet, other than her father and myself. And her nanny.”

Amanda is married to screenwriter David Benioff.
