When the time came for Lisa Kudrow to play a “mean” mom in her new film Hotel For Dogs, the 45-year-old actress braced herself for a creative struggle. The real-life mom to 10 ½-year-old Julian Murray tells Newsday, however, that her instincts ultimately proved wrong. ”I wish I could say it was very challenging since I love kids so much,” she explains. “I don’t know why it wasn’t.” Because the role is played as “heightened [reality],” Lisa says that it was easier to get in touch with her inner meanie. “I think it would have been hard if it had been extremely sincere,” she adds. “That would have been tough.” Julian has seen the film, and “got a kick out of it,” Lisa reveals.
“He’s excited that I’m in this movie his friends are going to see. They can’t see Wonderland, y’know.”
Furthermore, there was no confusion for Julian when it comes to separating the character from the person. “It’s not like I’ve never been angry,” Lisa notes. “But no, he knows it’s comedy.”
Julian is Lisa’s son with Michel Stern. Hotel For Dogs is in theaters now.
