Cuba Gooding On His Rough and Tumble Son

ROBERT PITTS/Landov

Video cameras around the home provide an added measure of security on multiple fronts for Cuba Gooding Jr. The 41-year-old actor revealed during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno that with a trampoline, a hockey rink, a batting cage and a boxing ring at his disposal, his 14-year-old son Spencer has become quite an accident-prone kid. While recovering from a broken arm, Spencer began urinating blood, necessitating yet another trip to the emergency room. “The doctor said, ‘What’s going on? He’s got a broken arm and he’s urinating blood. You’re beating the hell out of this kid,’” Cuba recalled. “I said, ‘No, no, no. Cut to the tape.”

“So I put the tape in, and there he was on the trampoline, doing backflips with his roller blades on, and a cast. I said, ‘I got you on tape, man! That’s right! Because you know I love you and everything, but they aren’t putting [me] in jail!’”

When asked by host Jay Leno if Spencer and his 11-year-old younger brother Mason have discovered girls yet, Cuba demurred, replying “that’s their own personal business.” While Cuba hasn’t yet had “the talk” with any of the kids from the sound of things, that talk will instead be had with their mom, Cuba’s wife of 15 years, Sara. “Spencer and Mason are two years apart, so when Spencer was 1 ½ it was cute for him to say ‘penis,’” Cuba explains. “Then when he was 4 ½, and Mason was 2 ½, he’d say something and Mason would repeat it, and Spencer would laugh…for an hour.” Sara stepped in, telling the boys that certain words can be said in the bathroom, only — which quickly made the bathroom the funniest room in their house! Said Cuba,

“I’d come home and there’s all kinds of craziness coming from the bathroom…My wife said, ‘No no no, that’s where they talk like that.’ They’d be in there laughing, you know, ‘Penis…butt…fart!,’ [laughter] ‘Poopy, poopy!’ [laughter].”

In addition to the boys, Cuba and Sara are parents to 3-year-old daughter Piper Adelaide.

Julia Ormond Shares Sophie's Campaign Strategies

INF

There was no harder ticket to come by this week than a ticket to the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Julia Ormond‘s 4-year-old daughter Sophie was one of the lucky ones, however, thanks to her dad — Rock The Vote co-founder Jon Rubin. “He was there with her in D.C.,” Julia revealed during a Thursday appearance on The Bonnie Hunt Show. “I spoke to her [over the phone] and said, ‘Is it cold?’ She just said, ‘Yeah.’” Calling her daughter “so sweet,” Julia went on to reveal that Sophie “thinks she personally got [President Obama] elected.”

“Her campaign started largely in the supermarket. She started out with ‘Bama’s gonna be present.’ Then she went campaigning with him…she gave out stickers. She still takes his stickers into school!”

Julia, 44, can currently be seen in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Dabbawalla Bags: Traffic-Stopping Backpacks and Lunch Bags

In India, dabbawallas bring home-cooked lunches to office workers. Here at home, fashionable children carry their lunches in Dabbawalla Bags ($38-48). They’re beyond cute and colorful. They’re kid-sized neoprene backpacks and lunch sacks that are super comfy to carry. The straps on the backpack are adjustable from the inside so they don’t dangle and the stretchy fabric is machine washable and stain resistant. The cute lunch bags are small but roomy with a comfy handle on top. Both styles have an outside pocket that’d be perfect for a juice box and utensils. Even more appealing, the bags are made by sewers who earn fair wages in a safe work environment. They make us want to pack a picnic!

Paul Bettany Laments Townhouse Living With Kids

James Devaney/WireImage

Paul Bettany says that the decision to move his family of four out of Brooklyn had nothing to do with the neighborhood — and everything to do with their “very vertical” townhouse. With so many floors to cover, the 37-year-old actor says he was in a constant state of flux while fielding requests like “Daddy, I want juice!” from sons Kai, 11, and Stellan, 5. Now happily settled into a loft, Paul adds “unless you have servants, I think five floors are just ridiculous with children.”

In his new film Inkheart, Paul plays Dustfinger, a homesick fire juggler. The script arrived at his door while Kai was reading the novel, and Paul jokes that he signed on to the project – at least in part — “in an entirely sort of cynical Machiavellian attempt to make him think I’m cool.” The part took on new significance for Paul, however, when the line between real life and make-believe began to blur.

“It’s peculiar because I play a character that has found himself in a very odd and hectic world and wants to get home to his wife and children, which sort of describes my experiences of every movie I’ve ever been on. So it was peculiar to sort of find myself with so much in common with this fantasy character.”

Jennifer Connelly, Paul’s wife and Kai and Stellan’s mom, also makes a brief appearance in the film. While it isn’t the couple’s first on-screen collaboration, Paul says that the boys factored into their decision-making process nonetheless. “Jennifer was just there,” he explains. “It’s like an hour’s work and so I went, ‘Well why don’t you just put the dress on and it’d be nice for the kids, you know, when we get older really.’”

Kai is Jennifer’s son from a previous relationship. Inkheart is in theaters now.

Kate Hudson Says Ryder Taught Her How to Say 'No'

Frazer Harrison/Getty

In her pre-mom life, Kate Hudson admits she was a bit of a pushover. A self-described “yes person,” the 29-year-old actress tells Metro “I don’t like letting people down.” Son Ryder Russell, 5, changed her approach, however. Says Kate,

“I had to learn to say ‘no.’ That came very easily once I became a mother. ‘Can I have candy?’ ‘No.’”

Characterizing herself as a strict mom, Kate says she had good role models in Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. “My parents were very tough and there’s something to be said for that,” she reveals. “My parents were really hard on me and yet they are my favorite people in the world and we have the greatest relationship.”

“That’s how I’d like to raise my child. You love them but you have to put your foot down.”

As for her 2007 divorce from Ryder’s dad — rocker Chris Robinson — the process was hard, but the couple kept the split amicable for their son’s sake. “You have to do the right thing for the children,” Kate says. “It’s not so easy but if it was we’d all be happily married for the rest of our lives with a million children, who are all perfect.”
