phil&teds Traveller Travel Crib/Cot: A Comfortable and Portable Bed for Baby

01/29/2009 at 10:30 AM ET

The phil&teds Traveller Travel Crib/Cot ($199) makes spending the night away from home with your baby a piece of cake. This ultralight travel crib weighs 5.5 lbs, sets up in a matter of minutes, and has its own travel bag with strap. There are mesh panels all four sides, and the two longer side panels unzip. On top, there’s a UV 80 protective mesh zipper cover — which will also keep the bugs out.

The Traveller is small enough to be stashed in your trunk or even in some stroller baskets. Use it for babies and children under 3 years of age. Set up, the dimensions are 20″ wide, 48″ long and 28″ high. Folded up size is 7″ x 7″ x 22″.

To set up the Traveller: First, place the top of the cot face down on the floor, then lay the four legs inward, snap together the two halves of the unattached long rails. Next, slide each connected long rail into the long side sleeves (one on each side of the Traveller), then attach the two shorter rails into the long rails, zip the end flaps down on either side of the shorter rails. Attach each leg pole to the rubber foot tabs, then inflate the mattress using the self-inflate valve. The last step is to unzip the double skinned floor (from outside), insert the mattress between the two skins and close the zipper. When you are outdoors, you can anchor the Traveller to the ground using the included pegs — through the holes in the feet.

We found that the Traveller was more comfortable for our baby to sleep because the mattress is inflated — versus the thinner mattress pad in our playard. The nylon fabric on the Traveller is water resistant and wipes clean easily.

Final Verdict: This product is terrific for nights away from home with baby because of the quick set up, comfortable mattress, and the compact way it folds up.

Having had both I can say the bjorn travel crib is significantly better. The phil and ted is great for outdoors but the bjorn is so much easier to set up and take down and is more comfortable

It looks like a dog crate.

We have travelled as far as Greece as as close to home as Tahoe with this crib and just love it. The real benefit is that it will fit in your suitcase or easily clips to the top of a rolling bag. It’s so much smaller than a packnplay when packed up. But when opened, it’s spacious and comfy. Our 17 month old likes it as much if not more than any crib that’s not the crib in her room :-) It also has a handy pocket inside the crib itself so you can put a sippy cup, book or toy in there which makes it feel more like home. It also zips up around the top of the crib–a feature we’ve never used, but could be handy if you were camping and trying to keep mosquitoes out!

We use the Peapod Plus…started using it around 15 months. We love it, very small to pack and cheaper!

Mom Said It

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
