Lisa Kudrow: Self-Proclaimed Pushover

Robert Pitts /Landov

When it comes to disciplining their 10 ½-year-old son Julian Murray, actress Lisa Kudrow often finds herself handing off the responsibility to her husband Michel Stern all the while taking notes on how to tighten the ropes! Admitting that she was often lenient with Julian, Lisa explains that with the guidance of Michel, she has learned to “be more strict.” However, despite laying out the rules, the 45-year-old Friends star is unsure of where to draw the line. “I don’t know if strict is OK or not,” says Lisa. That’s not to say that she isn’t improving on staying firm with her son, sharing that she is a work in progress!

“I’ve been trying to be a little more structured and have rules and boundaries and I’ve gotten better at it.”

While Lisa is happy to let her “husband take care of the discipline,” she was in for a surprise when she took Julian to the premiere of her new movie Hotel for Dogs. Completely enjoying her role as ”a villain in a family movie,” Lisa jokes that her portrayal may have been a bit too close for comfort. “Here’s the bad news. I took my son to a screening and, unfortunately, there were moments that felt familiar to him. Maybe that’s not so good.”

I think being strict is fine – as long as you have a counterpart to play the lightweight to your heavy sometimes. If you are a single parent, like my mom was, it’s difficult because you need your child to be disciplined BUT you want to be liked and available for more than punishments, you see?

But discipline is important: Kids like and need guidelines no matter how hard they fight them. It gives them an idea of appropriate limits and how far is too far. Without punishment, we’d only do things that were pleasurable without regard for the effect on others. Punishment lets a kid know that hey, your actions have consequences and sometimes those consequence involve more than yourself.
