Brendan Fraser's Sons Show Favoritism Towards Sponge Bob

INF

While Brendan Fraser may have swooning fans rushing to see his movies on the big screen, the actor admits that his three sons – Griffin Arthur, 6, Holden Fletcher, 4, and Leland Francis, 2 ½ — aren’t the least bit impressed by his celebrity status! Despite the proud papa’s strategy to tell his kids he “defeats bad guys,” Brendan laughs that, these days, “to tell you the truth,” they are captivated by none other than Sponge Bob Squarepants. However, the 40-year-old holds no hard feelings for the obvious favoritism shown by his sons, revealing he himself has nothing but respect for the character. “Now wait a minute, don’t be banging on Sponge Bob. He may wear square pants, but he lives in a pineapple under the sea,” teases Brendan, who notes that, in his favor, his children’s lack of interest in his job may be attributed to the fact that they “have seen very few of the films I’ve been in. I don’t know if they understand or are really interested in what I do.”

The threesome aren’t completely unaware of Brendan’s movies however, as he admits that they managed to catch a few commercials of Journey “in between Sponge Bob.” Their curiosity was short-lived, however, as Brendan explains that their attention was quickly drawn to the following toy advertisement.

“They were showing product placement and advertising campaigns for Batman products. So they were like, ‘Buy me that! Buy me that!’ ‘Yeah, pal, I’ll take care of that.’ ‘Buy me that!’ ‘I’ll do that, alright?’ ‘Buy me that!’”

Although Brendan’s list of costars may be impressive to most, the actor jokes that his boys show no interest in rubbing elbows with the stars, unless of course he is featured in a Sponge Bob film! “I think if I do do that and they learn that I was and I didn’t introduce them to Sponge Bob, they’ll probably never speak to me again.”

The boys are Brendan’s with estranged wife Afton Smith.

I watched Mr. Fraser today on the Bonnie Hunt show. I think his kids will adore him as they grow older. He has a wicked sense of humor and really likes to play, he seems much like a big kid himself. From what I know of him he seems like a great father, very grounded and not full of himself. Sad about his wife, but it happened. They do seem to have their kids first though and that’s great.

I used to have such a major crush on Brendan Fraser but watching him the past little while as he promotes his new film he has seemed really odd. Kind of annoying. I find myself changing the channel – lol!

I’m Brendan’s brother. And I love him no matter what. His appearance on Bonny Hunt’s show flew under my radar. Brendan apparently is very guarded about my nephews, as he has never made any effort to contact me to share his joy of fatherhood. Sad it may seem, I know. Many people will read incredible egotism (on both parts) into this lack of family sense. They are somewhat accurate to perceive that. The parents with whom Brendan and I grew up in a nuclear family were incredibly dysfunctional. Catholic guilt-laden and, to wit, always burdened same on their four sons…especially in a foreign land: The Netherlands. Egotism within our family fractured our existences like pieces of a shattered asteroid in space-growing ever further apart. Maybe Brendan, now in Belfast,Ireland, filming “Whole Lotta Sole” will read this comment and call me. He knows how. It is just a question of will he do it before he lifts his next pint of Guinness.

I just posted another comment that was longer than the space within the box. I think that automatically means that the Privacy Policy is in effect and that some editor who thinks my comment needs to be shortened to match corporate interest of People magazine can change the meaning. To try to sugar-coat my message: Brendan Fraser is my brother. He ignores me because of his vast ego. And someday, for some yet unknown reason before he and I are 65 years, maybe, he will regret his negligence. In the mean time, while he filming a silly film about small fish that most people would not eat in Ireland, his children could have an uncle for a babysitter for free. Instead, I bet he pays a “nanny” $100/hour. Go figure.
