The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea

In this sequel, Ariel and Eric must hide their precious daughter Melody’s mermaid heritage to protect her from Ursula’s revengeful sister Morgana in The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea ($20). But when the lure of the sea proves too strong for Melody, they call upon King Triton and all land and sea creatures to help rescue their daughter. Bonus material includes all-new Mer-Venture Challenge Game, a deleted song and more.

Anya really enjoys it and we’re happy to have a variation of the original The Little Mermaid DVD because there’s only so many times you can hear “Under Da Sea!”

If you recall hearing about another recent Little Mermaid straight-to-DVD feature, you’re not dreaming. August 2008 saw the release of The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning, the prequel to The Little Mermaid, which chronicled Ariel’s life before she met her prince and grew legs. The Little Mermaid II is actually a re-issue; it was originally released in 2000.

The new DVD box looks so much better than the previous one!

The movie is really not as good as the original though, mostly because of the graphics, and the language also lost some of its princesse-ness. It’s also weird to have Ariel in the “bad” role of the parent who won’t let her child be who she is, like Triton used to be. But I think children will like it all the same. It’s still a cute little mermaid story with underwater adventure and nice songs! And if Ariel is your little one’s favourite princess, definitely get it!!

Ariel’s Beginning is more faithful to the original than this one though, definitely worth it! And so you can have even more variations if you’re tired of hearing the same songs! ;)
